  1. Joe, are you becoming a conspiracist?
  2. Sorry to hear about the loss, Mike. God bless your friend for keeping the flame alive by showing you the ropes. That's how it has to happen, not from some textbook or bullshit class at the local college. Bobby Forrester was a really soulful player. I enjoy all the recordings he's on that I own. There is something to say for that style and it goes beyond the notes he's playing. I believe many of the newer cats can hang as far as the technical aspects are concerned, but they lack the "feel" to me.
  3. Most I've seen use two fingers. When I first saw that video and JOS was doing it with one finger, I was dumbfounded. I still don't know how he does it. Here's to THE MAN of the Hammond organ.... Jimmy Smith. RIP.
  4. So the Bulls offer him $4million more for the same period of time (four years) and he turns his back on Detroit? I guess he must really not like Flip, because that seems crazy. Then again, business is business. Now the Darko trade is looking really bad.
  5. Vocoders and talkboxes sound similair but are very different functionally. I think Stevie used both. There's a video on Youtube of him using a talkbox. If you want to sound like a robot, there's nothing better than a vocoder. If you want to look like a robot, might want to go to the local hardware store. If you want to look like Herbie on that album FFA posted, Goodwill is always there for you.
  6. In simplest terms, a vocoder is a device that lets you "talk" through an instrument like a synthesizer. Think of "More Bounce To The Ounce" by Zapp.
  7. I was going to suggest this record as well. Beautiful stuff. Joe and I have talked about a "latin-tinged" recording.
  8. God, this chills me right to the bone to hear this. That was my number one fear when Zora was small. In fact, even though she is over 2 years old now, I still check on her if she's been asleep for more than 2 hours during the day... That is horrible.
  9. My suggestion is to email a complaint to Invision, the makers of this software. I have to upgrade when new versions come out due not only to bug fixes but security fixes. They are the ones that chose to change the way the search works, not me. If it stinks, email them and tell them so and why.
  10. We had more fun than should be allowed by law. Frank Malfitano is the best festival director one could ever hope for. He made us feel instantly at home and all of his staff were outstanding. He's a real genuine, beautiful cat. We met and hung out with a lot of musicians, saw some old friends (like Marcus Belgrave) and just had a wonderful time. Hopefully we'll be back in that area come October.
  11. I wonder if they will come to the states.
  12. What are you trying to record? Where is it being recorded? With a good stereo pair the acoustic space is going to have an enormous impact on the sound. AKGs are nice. I would also look at the MXL 603s and 604s.
  13. Please keep these posts in the same thread instead of making a new thread for every movie.
  14. No, they are playing off what Wade said a few weeks back, that he wanted to be the first one of the 2003 draft to win a ring. Darko already has one. Besides, the sentence says "star member of the stellar draft class". Despite Darko's lack of play in Detroit, he's still a star. Everybody knows who he is. Infamy is pretty much the same as being famous, right?
  15. From the ESPN article: Um... Darko already has a ring, dude.
  16. So am I, but it's just expensive enough that I'm not sure I want to take the plunge.
  17. One of the best he's written and I'm a regular Sportsguy reader. He really nails the entire problem with the NBA right now. The sad thing is, I don't think they care.
  18. As usual, the Sportsguy is right on:
  19. That's what it's all about: Having someone to enjoy the good times with and be there for you during the bad.
  20. Cuban is an ass, but sometimes he's right. Frankly, I think the officials have not kept up with the game. The players have gotten better and better, the rules tighter and tighter, the game faster and faster, and the officials have stayed in the same spot. The NBA really needs to address this because it's only going to get worse. At the very least, I think they should allow coaches to challenge calls in a game after the clock ticks past 2:00 in the fourth (and like in football, if the call is upheld, the team that challenged it loses a time-out). This would alleviate many grievances about refs blowing close games.
  21. Wait, you mean some people on the internet are not who they say they are!??! I'm flabbergasted. I'm assuming she didn't tell her parents that she was letting this guy pick her up after school. If she did, then shame on them.
  22. Fascinating story behind the painting and the artist. Thanks for posting.
  23. That may be but I think I'd be able to tell Zawinul and Barry Harris apart! At first I thought it might be Victor Feldman, but then I noticed Yusef and I don't think those two played in the band together.
