  1. Yeah, but the last (and first) time I went to the Jazz Standard to see Stryker/Slagel it was a $25 cover. Multiply that by four people, and...
  2. Don't know much about him but have heard and read good things. There is a quick review of a date he played on as part of a multi-album review that also includes our first record over on AAJ: http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article_email.php?id=439
  3. Mike Ricci is a good guy. Sure, he's made some flubs, but he's always been understanding. He's also a big supporter of the music. One thing folks have to keep in mind is that AAJ is a business and as such they have to play by different rules than we do here. Frankly, my acceptance and openness can sometimes get me in trouble (and sometimes I wonder if the band's fortunes have suffered as a result... I know of at least two instances where that has happened but luckily they were nothing big... but what about the ones I don't know about?) Most people can seperate the forums from the band, but I worry about those that can't. Anyway, everybody is entitled to his/her opinion, but I've found Ricci to be a very nice person.
  4. I'm not opposed to this, not because I want to necessarily pick up JC posters (although of course they are welcome here... that goes without saying I hope) but because I like the idea of bringing a wider range of music discussion to the board. What should we call it?
  5. People like that should really either forego music altogether or just rent a small sound system and play a Kenny G CD. Why even bother?
  6. The ideal jazz club? One that will hire organissimo.
  7. Chuck, We're at Gull Landing tomorrow night and Sunday night. Come on down (up?) and I'll buy you a beer or two or three. I remember that evening that the storm came rolling in. In fact, I have it on tape (well, harddisk). It's pretty funny. Tonight it rained up until about 5 minutes to show time and for some reason Scully decided to keep the concert outside instead of moving it into the high school (which is a much better venue to play than the gazebo in Manistee). I was almost ready to say "fuck it" and leave. Especially since rain + electric instruments = no fun. That and the fact that in order to load our stuff in we had to walk across soaking wet sand and track said sand onto the "bandstand" and then place our cords, amps, and instruments in it. No thanks. I've only had my new Hammond organ for about a week and was not really excited about placing an instrument that I've invested $5000 into on a bed of wet sand. Frankly, I was very pissed off. But I put that anger into playing and I think we played very well. It was almost as fun as Baker's last Saturday (I had way too much fun at that gig!) The new Hammond is a joy to play and I can't help but be inspired by it. Anyway, I hope to see you and/or Mark at Gull Landing. The food is outstanding! I'll probably be recording tomorrow as well (I didn't record tonight because of the rain and not wanting to risk my laptop). Arno is sounding great and we're having a blast so far despite the conditions. Hopefully the weather cooperates tomorrow, although they have a new canopy at Gull Landing that is very nice.
  8. Well, we are tentatively scheduled to be at the Blues Alley on October 11th. Does that count?
  9. Seems like the logical solution. However, if there is a big enough market for this type of thing, the movie industry will cater to it, director's wishes be damned. That's a guarantee!
  10. I was 17 when I decided to dedicate myself to the monstrosity that is the Hammond B3. Good times! Happy bday!
  11. What that is, my friends, is the understanding of melody, the mastery of phrasing, and the perfection of the human voice. If anyone on today's scene has those three things in their bag, I haven't heard it.
  12. Thanks to the persistence of Ron S, I'm proud to announce that we will be performing in Philadelphia on January 19th at the Philadelphia Museum of Art as part of their "Art After 5" concert series. This will be our debut performance in Philly so I expect all y'all Philly members to be there! But seriously, the concert is free after paying the museum entrance fee (which I believe is $12 for adult non-members). Here's the website for more info about the series: http://www.philamuseum.org/artafter5/ Pretty cool!
  13. Just saw this, sorry. Marcus sounded terrific. We really need to do something with him on an upcoming project. The man plays beautifully. And Fathead puts the "SOUL" in soulful. I love his tone, phrasing, and playing. The real deal. It was an honor to open for him and Marcus.
  14. Now they're talking about a possible suicide attempt by the doctor. Geez. Let's hope it was just a gas leak.
  15. No, this is a case of you messing with copyrighted material. Pretty "clean" cut, if you ask me.
  16. OMG THAT WOULD BE SO KICKASS! ESPECIALLY IF YOU WOKE UP A ZOMBIE HANK MOBLEY AND HE CAME BURSTING UP OUT OF HIS GRAVE AND ATE YOUR BRAIN. HE MIGHT NEED SOMETHING ELSE TO EAT AFTER THAT, THOUGH...
  17. I think only Satan shares a birthday with Bush. Happy birthday my brother from another mother!
  18. Tip: Get drunk and go in there totally blasted. It makes for better music. Ok, not really, but it makes for better stories. But seriously, good luck! Go in there and kick ass! I love being in the studio... I've got the jones big time to start another project!
  19. Heh heh. This would be funny even if it wasn't true! Leo Sayer is so bad he makes Mobley look like a third-rate Clarence Clemmons.
  20. I upped the allowed characters to four because of the slow-down problems we were having. I can put it back to three.
  21. That is exactly what we set out to do, believe it or not. Damn. Someone figured us out.
  22. I still think the Pistons were a better team, but Flip got out-coached bigtime. Riley is a bad motherfoyer and could even take the current Knicks and get them to the playoffs. Also, the rule changes really hurt the Pistons defense and helped the kind of offense that Wade plays, which is great for the Heat. I don't think overall it's good for the league, but I'm not the commissioner, so what do I know? That's all in the past, though. I'm worried about this next season. I still can't believe Big Ben left for Chicago. The Pistons are in real trouble.
  23. I'll just pay you the $10, thanks.
  24. C'mon, you would'nt have paid in the first place. You would've just found a way to sneak in.
