  1. I heard him perform on several occasions and have to admit that there were times when I wished he'd shorten his solos somewhat. Nothing in the way of stories to tell, except that I once introduced him at the Five Spot (1964) and there was no sign of him. I killed some time with silly, nervous chatter, but he still did not show. I asked my co-MC, Mort Fega, to check the men's room and asked the audience to bear with me while I looked outside. They laughed, I exited and all went well when I found him down the street, brought him back, and performed a brief reintroduction.

Allen, an educated guess would be that you are hearing Freddy Cusick and Irving Brodsky, they never stopped rambling. If it's any consolation, I hear them, too, but rarely around Yugoslavian holidays.
  3. Frances Faye was a trip. a bizarre number with Martha Raye and Bing Crosby in a 1937 film.
  4. As I recall, Bethlehem was also doing quite well with the Australian Jazz Quartet.

    George Butler

I know he developed Altzheimers, but even back in the 70s he wasn't wrapped too tight. He told me on a couple of occasions that he always listened to my radio show--I didn't have one back then. Most of us knew he had been hired for all the wrong reasons, so we kinda humored him. He seemed nice enough, he just didn't have a clue when it came to this business. In a way, Sony/Columbia used him.
  6. If there are such signs where I live, I have not noticed them. Since I no longer have a dog, I don't enter the park after 1 pm, and I know that there was no such curfew in place when I did have Mingus and Bessie. I should add that, from my window, I do see people walking their dogs or running themselves between 1 AM and 6 AM. But these are, as far as I know, not "as seen on TV" types.

    George Butler

The fact that he insisted on using the honorary "Dr." title says to me that he might have been aware of his own unimportance. I guess there's something to say for that.
  8. He said he didn't know that there was a 1 AM curfew for Central Park. I can believe that, I live across the street from that park and never knew that there was any curfew. Typical for NYPD, they use their silly little laws selectively. For years (and, perhaps, still) it was against the law to sit at a bar and face the other way--the NYPD only enforced that nonsense when they wanted an excuse to arrest or harass.

Thank you Jim, I'll second that. To be perfectly honest, I can't think of anything George Butler ever did to advance the cause of jazz. Having all but destroyed Blue Note, he came to Columbia at a time when they needed to have someone black and visible, and worked hard to bring us Wynton. Woody Shaw? Nonsense, that was not his doing. Sorry he died, but it is a loss suffered by jazz.

  15. I only met her about 3 times and that's how she came across to me. More telling is, perhaps, that I never heard a disparaging word about her--and I hear a lot over the years!
  16. MG: "You must be awfully tall, Chris. I can only reach twelve shelves high." Well, while I do find jazz to be uplifting, I do not find it beneath me to mount a folding stepladder. (and find it beneath me, as it were). I like your main CD rack. Mine comprises 3 units, but I should have allowed some headroom--as you did. I also have several hundred 45 rpm discs in a closet Anyone else collect those?
  17. No, I didn't want to devalue it.
  18. Here's the rest of what's left. I still also have the boxes and booklets for about 35 Mosaics that "disappeared". Can''t cry over spilled milk.
  19. I sold 18,000 LPs a few years back and had thousands of CDs and DVDs stolen, but there is something left: more in next post...
