  1. I think I've heard that one. I'm waiting for the Raney/Marsh trainwreck story.
  2. What are the titles?
  3. Momentary diversion... Larry, in the Raney thread that David linked to, you posted this gem: I found that to be very interesting (and astute). Interesting because I've been studying out of a book called "Forward Motion", by pianist Hal Galper in which this point forms the main thesis of the entire book: that strong lines are created when chord tones (either given or superimposed) are syncronized with the strong beats of a measure (1 and 3), while color tones are lined up with the weak or "off" beats. Bach's music is perfectly clear in this regard, as is Raney's. I wish we had more time in Chicago to talk about stuff like this, but so it goes. Back on topic.
  4. I spent a couple of fruitful hours yesterday working on "Invention" from the Play Duets w/Raney CD. Great lines in the head, and it was especially ear-opening to jam along with the backing track for a while, then give a listen to his soloing. Some surprising twists and turns in what he does. The changes are from There Will Never Be Another You.
  5. featuring Bob Brookmeyer is a nice one.
  6. Tell us about it. http://elderly.com/vintage/items/40U-4400.htm I actually went to Elderly around 2004 to scope out a Hofner Verythin (Classic, iirc). Based on what I had read, it seemed like the guitar for me. The one they had didn't feel right, however. I ended up buying a Jazzica Custom instead, which has been a good archtop. Well, Saturday afternoon I stopped in with no agenda, grabbed the pictured guitar off the wall, and it said, "Take me home!". First I have to try it through an amp - Saturday afternoon is not a good day to venture in the amp room, what with all the wannabe masters of metal in there wanking away. So, hmmm. I've got an Ibanez, a Stromberg, and a flight case that I can sell....
  7. I started teaching guitar for the jazz program at MSU at the beginning of the year, and I'm finding it to be a very stimulating experience. It's got me working on/thinking about music on a more involved level of detail than ever before. I've been digging into materials that have been long neglected in an effort to clarify for myself and my (fellow) students a wide variety of musical issues. I really hope I can continue this work for a good long stretch, both to see where it leads, and for the motivation it's providing me. And FFA, don't discount the effect you've no doubt had on both students and bandmates with whom you've worked. Even just a word of encouragement at the right moment can make a big impact on someone finding their way. I'm sure we can all think of examples of this in our own lives. The comments about being too much in our own heads rings true. I struggle with this as well, which is why I spend time meditating or getting out in the woods or just reminding myself to be present. But the big thing is letting go of fear - in all of its manifestations.
  8. Went into Elderly Instruments today... feeling some guitar lust right about now.
  9. Their names were/are Dawn and Jamie. And you're not the first to ask. Glad you're still digging the music. I still like that album, too, which is saying something (own worst critic and all).
  10. How interesting! Wish I could bring you up to MSU.
  11. Saruman.
  12. Jazz began by decree of an evil wizard??
  13. No, it was a joke - I had invited her via facebook, but never got a reply, and now find out that she was there but didn't come up to say hi. Sometimes I do stealth missions like that, but you know, just sayin'... What the hell?
  14. Well geez - did I say something to offend Carla?
  15. Been to a few painful shows - Ziggy Marley, Iron Maiden (too close to the stacks), some punk band my friend took me to see at the Heidelberg in Ann Arbor back in the early 90's. The stage volume at a couple of organissimo gigs got a wee bit out of hand.
  16. Greg, for me it's a "I know it when I hear it" kind of a thing. And I'm not talking about good or bad either way, and it's fine that the line between musics of all kinds gets blurred. Beyond that, I personally have no interest in the naming debate!
  17. Yeah, it's true. A few years ago I saw a bumper sticker that got me. It read: STAY METAL
  18. As a former metalhead, it's nice to know that a current metalhead can listen to our music and not say it sucks. :rsmile:
  19. For me, it's a matter of intent, intensity, and influences.
  20. Yeah! Great album.
  21. I give credit here for good grammer, plus the caveat.
  22. Joe G

    Jimmy Raney

Anything you'd like to share about Raney would be appreciated by me. ~ Getting ready to dig into the Play Duets cd with some of my students. Sounds like big fun to me!
  23. Man, this is an old thread. Check out the first page, both for the price of gas when we started the conversation, and for those who no longer post here.
  24. Ain't it funky now?

  25. This was the one I couldn't wrap my head around. If I was wrong about this person being real, my sincere apologies.
