Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters... RELEASED!
Joe G replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Now that is some jive shit. I dare say that if that's his M.O., his career likely won't get too far. You just can't do people like that and expect it to come up all roses... Well, keep on keepin' on, and hopefully one day we can laugh about shit like that over a cold one. -

Damn! Thanks Amigo! P.S., When do we get to hear some of your stuff SoulStream? -
Don't miss a beat, indeed! I was a little embarrassed, since I consistently site Grant as one of my major influences whenever asked. Yes, Grant had his licks (as we all do), and didn't make a huge effort to disguise them. But when he was on, that feel was a motherf***er. Everytime I play "This could be the start of something", I'm thinking about how fluently Grant played that tune. It's what I'm aspiring to achieve. Detroit bassist Rodney Whitaker told me a story (related to him by George Benson) about Grant. Back in the day, it happened one night that Benson, Wes Montgomery, and Grant showed up at the same club (I can't remember whose gig it was), and all three got up to play on a tune. So George did his thing, and the people said, "Cool, man". Wes did his thing, and got a similar response. Grant started to play, and everyone's head turned, because he had that single note thing that just spoke. Like Jim said, when Larry used the term "overrated", well, we all know the response that that word gets around here! Anyway, I'm flattered by the praise (in this thread as well as in the article), but would rather not be used as an example to put someone else down. Especially one of my heroes. And a deceased hero at that. Another point that occurred to me is that it just isn't fair to compare players of different eras. The musicians of today are drawing on musical devices, new languages, technologies, etc., that simply didn't exist in the 60's. Or if something did exist, the information about it was much harder to come by. We have so much information today that discrimination is needed more than anything. In the end it all comes down to how we use all that stuff to say something meaningful, and I believe that Grant did an exemplary job with what he had available to him. J

Yes my son... your penance is done. -
Right on Al! I've been listening to those albums regularly; just yesterday in fact I had Mysterious Traveller and Black Market in the player. I love that first tune on MT, Nubian Sundance, is it? I often give that one repeated listenings. That part in the middle when it calms down and Wayne plays that beautiful melody on soprano, followed by that ascending synth tone, just kills me every time! And that groove! :rsmile: Live in Tokyo, Live and Unreleased, and Sweetnighter are on my short list. Edit: I also wanted to mention Wayne's solo on Elegant People from BM. What can I say about it though? It's just so good. So much invention with just a series of short phrases. Listening to that I'm thinking, do I ever even come close to playing like that??? Amazing stuff.

I'd better get started on that out-of-control drug habit... -
Anyone game for writing a review on CDBaby?

Those posts don't go up instantly like they do here. It should be up within 24 hours or less. Thanks Conn. -

I was thinking this morning that since we now have three longer reviews over on cdbaby, it would look really good to have a bunch of shorter blurbs. You know the type: I love this CD! Organissimo rocks! ...and so on. Just a thought, if any of our friends here are inclined. We definitely appreciate the support. :rsmile: -

Yes, we're "the Thinking Person's Organ combo." -
Some more recommended recordings with Haden: Metheny's Rejoicing, a trio date with Haden and Billy Higgins. Very dark and beautiful. Scofield's Grace Under Pressure, with Joey Baron and Bill Frisell. Again, that deep tone and time-feel of Charlie's is well displayed. Sco's Time On My Hands, with Lovano and DeJonette is great, too.

I hope it happens. The Texans on the board are some badass mammy-jammys! Couldn't agree more with what B3-er said. Conn is fun and friendly and I had a great time hanging out and playing. Thanks for the greazy review, and I hope we meet again. -

Better late than never! Thanks Peter, I sure hope it works out that we can bring it to you live in Philly!

There's a running joke in our circle of musicians about B-3er's "homemade changes"...

Nice work, as always, Jim. I don't see anything to add beyond what's mentioned above.

Same here. Now if I can only harness that creative power for good instead of evil.... :rsly:

The nice thing about that picture is that it finally replaces the mental image I've had of you ever since you posted this in my birthday thread:

Great! Another piece of gear we gotta schlep!

Ornette Coleman is coming to Ann Arbor early next year. Don't know if you consider him a giant, but Charles Lloyd is out there gigging.

Free For All, forget the short posts--I'm picking up what you're laying down! Or as we like to call it: White, polite, and UPTIGHT!

so when's the next record?
Joe G replied to Soul Stream's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
This is sort of like when you get married, and that day people start asking you when you're going to have children. Just kidding SoulStream, we appreciate your interest. Jim's been making noise about getting back into the studio come November. We have been writing new tunes (some of which I think are pretty cool), but basically, these kinds of projects often have their own timetable, you know? You can't rush the process. Of course the family here will be the first to know about any new developments... -
