  2. Personally, I can't imagine why Norah or Blue Note would be at all concerned about that link, thrice removed as it is.
  3. Julaluddin Rumi was a 13th century Sufi poet. Coleman Barks is considered by many to the foremost interpreter of his many works. It's beautiful stuff. If you do a search on Rumi you will find lots of websites to check out.
  4. One more that I found, and it makes me chuckle when I think about the somewhat rough gig organissimo did last night: If you are irritated with every rub, how will your mirror be polished? Rumi ROCKS!
  5. I had to share this one with everybody as well. Today like every other day We wake up empty and frightened. Don't open the door to the study and begin reading. Take down a musical instrument. Let the beauty we love be what we do. There are a hundred ways to kneel and kiss the ground.
  6. Just noticed we now have 300 members!

Have A Little Faith is a nice album. I like the Copland piece. This last week I've been listening to Marc Johnson's The Sound of Summer Running. It's like an updated Bass Desires with Frisell, Metheny, and Baron. When it first came out, I didn't dig it all that much, I think that's because it didn't jibe with my expectations. But revisiting it, I find it to be a very good album. I spent a couple hours the other night learning one of the tunes. Now I can't get it out of my head!
  8. This has been my main concern over the last few years as well. I'll have to look up the quote, but there was an author who said something to the effect of, "Most artists concern themselves with originality, which they should never bother about. Instead, they should strive for authenticity." Or how about this, from Rumi: Be courageous and discipline yourself. Work. Keep digging your well. Don't think about getting off from work. Water is there somewhere. Submit to a daily practice. Your loyalty to that is a ring on the door. Keep knocking, and the joy inside will eventually open a window and look out to see who's there. Keep working. Exert yourself toward the pull of God. Laziness and disdain are not devotions, Your efforts will bring a result. You'll watch the wings of divine attraction Lift from the nest and come toward you! As dawn lightens, blow out the candle. Dawn is in your eyes now.
  9. Anything under six digits has to be good, one would think. B)
  10. I was just checking out your website David. Nice to have people like you around! Please continue to jump into our discussions as you see fit. The articles you've written look interesting and I plan on reading them as soon as I have the time. I just printed out the one from your site titled The Utopian Blues. The subject matter is right up my alley. See you around!
  11. For the love of GOD!!! Make it stop!
  12. What did you expect, Randy? You spam, they slam!
  13. I remain avatar-free. But my favorite avatars have all been AfricaBrass'. Especially the animated one that zoomed in on different details of that crazy scene with the cat and the cabbage head guy. Where did you find that anyway? Kenny G in hell was great, too.
  14. Thank you Mnytime. That "if you don't like it, leave the country" line has always baffled me. It basically signals the complete breakdown of whatever dialogue might have been taking place.
  15. Probably the funniest thing in Straight No Chaser is Monk's comment about his bandmate's (can't remember who it was) "Danish pants": "Danish pants? (dramatic pause...) Those are some bad motherfuckers!" Another great moment is his attempts to order chicken livers in that hotel.
  16. Over the weekend: Marc Johnson--The Sound of Summer Running Peter Bernstein's latest

  18. Jim, pack your bags. The organissimo forum all stars are going to Indonesia!!!
  19. Here's the site: http://www.wartajazz.com/newreleases/ It's apparently an Indonesian jazz site. Check out the list to see who's at number 20 and 21!
  20. Man, there seemed to be quite a jump in the number of new members recently. When Musicboy registered, I think he was member # 240something, on May 19th. It's a week later and there's over 290! That's the biggest surge in quite a while. B)
  21. Interesting. I don't have any idea who it might be.

    Comments?
  23. Wow. There's a fashion trend I've been noticing lately: Printed words on the seats of women's pants. At first I thought this was like having written permission to have a look. But I just realized that what I've seen printed in both cases was a brand name. So basically it's just another form of advertisement, only this time emblazoned across a woman's butt!

Thanks again for your input, Jim. I think this has been my main barrier to appreciating vocal jazz more deeply and wholeheartedly. I tend to be more open to vocals in other types of music, since hipness isn't as much of a concern outside of jazz. But you did remind me that I love the John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman album, I just haven't pulled it out in a while. Bobby McFerrin is one of a kind, and Cassandra Wilson does some nice stuff. There's lots out there that I'm sure I would like if I were exposed to it.

If I have one, he would be it. I hope you realize I was kidding!!!
