What live music are you going to see tonight?
Joe G replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Well, pretty cool show. Didn't hit me where I live, so to speak, but there were some worthwhile moments. They did a Bach prelude in an interesting way: they cut the sound to the P.A., so we were hearing just the acoustic sound of their guitars. Then the each played every third note of the piece. It had a very nice cascading effect. That was probably my favorite work of the night. Tony Levin was cool to see in this context. He played only fretless electric, and got a good tone out of that thing. Just kind of a trip seeing him rockin' out in the dining room. -

For me, $20. These guys were supposed to be playing at the Creole Gallery this weekend, but all shows there have been cancelled for the time being. I don't know how this guy got ahold of them, but I guess they decided that since they were already routing through the area, they might as well play somewhere. A friend of mine was my hookup, otherwise I wouldn't have even known about it. I'll post about it later tonight! -

I've been invited to see a private concert at someone's home in Williamston tonight: The California Guitar Trio w/ Tony Levin. -
It hurts my head like a thousand dogs.

A tragic death today in Lansing...

The memorial service was held on Tuesday. An estimated 1,100 people showed up, cramming into Dart Auditorium, plus several overflow rooms, and the cafeteria at Lansing Community College. Very moving, for me. A fine story in this week's City Pulse on Robert, written by our friend Lawrence Cosentino. http://www.lansingcitypulse.com/ -
Somewhere between 9 and 12 F, depending on what thermometer you look at. I just walked by the state capital building, and there was a country band playing in a tent set up on the lawn. I peeked inside, and there were about 15 people standing there pretending to enjoy themselves. That band was really loud, too. My idea of hell - as a musician and a listener.

Hilary Hahn w/the Indianapolis Symphony; Sibelius Violin Concerto, and the Largo from one of the Bach solo violin works for an encore. She makes it all look so easy. Great, full tone, nearly flawless execution. Got some real fire going in the third movement. The Bach was sublime. -
Either that, or what comes next won't come from America.

I really doubt it. I think that mass market-driven musical trends are about played out.

Around here it's the regular kind. Up north, they're high octane.

Wow... I had forgotten all about those. A familiar sight back in our days of camping and backpacking up and down the west coast. I remember one year doing some winter camping in northern Michigan, at a state forest called Pigeon River. No Pigeons up there that I can recall, but the snow was pretty deep, and the chickadees (which are one of my favorites) would flock to the campsites looking for morsels. They were pretty bold by this time, and were landing on everything, including ourselves. One landed on the edge of a frypan, while the stove was on. Another flew up into the van and landed on the steering wheel. We went out to cut some brush, and one landed on the handsaw my dad was holding up as he pointed toward some deadwood. Several birds hitched a ride back to camp on the branches we were dragging. Eating a sammich was fun, what with all the dive bombing. It was all pretty hilarious. I think my dad has a picture of me holding 3 chickadees and a nuthatch in one hand, as they fed on the trail mix I held out. Had another interesting experience with some chickadees. I was walking in a wooded area, and encountered a small group of them doing their thing. Later on, I found them again, but instead of the normal activity, they were all huddled together, making this quiet peeping sound. I stopped and looked around, and after about 15 seconds, a cat came walking up the trial I was on. As soon as the cat saw me, it stopped, turned tail and ran back up the way it had come. I was really amazed that these chickadees were aware of the cat's approach long before I could see it or hear it. They were probably responding to warning calls from other birds, is my guess.

Man. The more I think about this, the darker I feel. Going back to that anecdote I mentioned earlier, when Robert greeted me with "welcome home", I've been thinking of some of the broader implications of what that attitude are. How many musicians here have dealt with club owners whose basic attitude is, "What are you going to do for me?". There are some who won't even bother to put up a stupid poster in the window! I realize that someone running a business is typically very busy, and if they don't get enough paying customers, they might go under. It's not a charity. But then, the Creole Gallery is in the same position. Meegan has spoken to us before about how she needs to consider the bottom line, too. What sets someone like Robert (and Meegan) apart is that the whole thrust there is doing what was right for the community. There are a few groups who can sell out two sets at the Creole, but organissimo isn't one of them. We were happy with the, oh, 2/3 capacity that we pulled in. Point being, they didn't have to give us a date there. That they did, and consistantly, speaks volumes to me about what they think is important, namely, providing a place for artists and musicians who are striving to develop themselves, who are attempting to do something meaningful, and who can hopefully, then, attract others to their work. It we lose the Creole, that would be a nearly equal blow to the one we've already received. I can only hope that the rest of us can step up to fill the needs of the moment from here on out. It's been pointed out to methat if Robert's vision were truly that strong, then it should be able to continue on after his death. Time will tell on that count. I realize that this doesn't directly concern most of the members here, but maybe if you know someone doing the kind of work that Robert did, this might prompt you to consider what it would be like if they were no longer there, and perhaps you can have a fuller appreciation for how they might be enriching the lives of those around them. -

I just can't even believe he's gone, and especially in this way. I've long considered him, along with Meegan Holland, his girlfriend and business partner, to be at the center of what is good in this town, artistically speaking. My heart truly goes out to Meegan and Robert's family. But we all lost a friend today in this town. I remember last fall when organissimo played the Creole. As I walked in with my guitar and backpack, Robert saw me, smiled, and said, "Welcome home!" It grieves me deeply to know I'll never hear that again. -

This might not mean much, but one of my least favorite questions to answer is, "What kind of music do you play?" Especially when it comes from people who have not delved very deeply into the world of music. Something in me balks at having to narrow it down to a label. -

From Barak's page, this one is of Jim and I, standing amazed, while we listen to the Call to Prayer from a nearby minaret. It filled the entire courtyard with an incredible, haunting sound. In the pauses between phrases could be heard more distant calls, and sometimes the pitch relationships between the near and far made your spine tingle.
