  1. Rachel and I attended the Gary Burton Quartet reunion concert in Detroit this evening. Wonderful show. Steve Swallow, layin' it down, also contributed a couple of excellent solos. Metheny played great, really coming up with some interesting stuff both in his solos and while comping behind Gary. Nice work from Antonio Sanchez, who was a bit more understated perhaps than he has been with the PMG. Gary himself played beautifully, and is also a delightful MC, telling several funny stories about different tunes. He also could pass for Chuck Nessa's long lost brother, strangely enough. Their voices are uncannily similar! The music was drawn from that era of 70's jazz with tunes by Corea, Jarrett, and Carla Bley + Metheny, Burton and Swallow. One tune in particular that stood out for me was Burton's tune "Walter L." Pat especially did a fantastic solo on that one, with a really gritty tone. I just checked the Real Book, and it says that tune is on "Carnegie Hall". Anyone know if that album is still in print?
  2. Not to mention Bob Moses, but you take what you can get.
  3. In a few hours: Gary Burton Quartet feat. Pat Metheny, Steve Swallow, and Antonio Sanchez.
  4. I might have to have you top me off a couple of times by the time we get to D.C. in October.
  5. Let's just say Jack Nicholson's got nothing on this guy.
  6. Hmm.... your driving scares me sometimes. I drive defensively, I'll admit it. But have I ever been in a car accident? Nope. I am always watching the other people on the road and consider myself a safe driver. I would just ask you to keep it under 75 mph, and maintain the 1 car length per every 10 mph ratio, when I'm in the passenger seat. It's nerve racking when you're not the one in control.

  8. About those guitars, I read that he had given them to someone to hang onto while he wasn't using them. Picked the wrong guy apparently; when he went to retrieve them for the Remember Shakti project, he found them in such disrepair that they were essentially useless. I suppose he could have had Abe Wechter build him another (in Paw Paw, MI, coincidently), but he chose to go with electric. Doesn't really bother me either way.
  9. The Tonight Show? That's from Sco's Live Three Ways, put out by Blue Note video in the 90's. Recently released on DVD. I wish that organ trio was featured for a full set on the DVD. Smoking.
  10. I read that they couldn't track him down!
  11. The Wish, from Remember Shakti, is probably my favorite Mclaughlin performance on record. Some really nice compositions on The Believer, like Anna. I've seen this group twice and enjoyed both shows. Was too young to have seen the 70's incarnation.
  12. You'd think if a fella had an act like that, he'd have his own parking meter.
  13. I've been digging a CD I recently picked up from Karsh Kale, titled "Liberation". Modern techno/dance grooves mixed with Hindustani elements. Guests include Zakir Hussein and Bill Laswell. Not for everyone, I'm certain (I played if for Jim A., and he didn't seem too excited. Of course, it was 2:30 a.m. after a long day and a gig). I did a search on the board, and only one mention came up; from jazzbo. Any comments, Lon? I'd jump at the chance to attend a show in Chicago or elsewhere (and once again, as with Monday Michiru, he was just there and I missed it); I'm sure it would be quite the rave, and an interestingly diverse crowd.
  14. I'm sure these kinds of cases have been heard before. Not sure about the results, though.
  15. I was playing a couple of these at Elderly Instruments today: Tacoma® BM6C Thunderhawk Baritone Guitar. The scale is considerably longer than an average guitar, so it takes some getting used to, but what a sound!
  16. A belated Happy Birthday to organissimo's chauffeur of choice when in Beantown.
  17. REALLY looking forward to all of this.
  18. I would, but I'm not in Michigan right now.

    Ahem...

Jeez - and there I am in that thread calling attention to her "hot sister".
  20. Dude - it's the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Everything was on "10".
  21. She was in Chicago not too long ago. Wish I would have known about that beforehand.

    Suzanne Vega

Strangely, I was thinking about that Tom's Diner remix just yesterday.
  23. :rsly: Hmmmm.....
  24. Put me on record as liking Visions of the Emerald Beyond. It's a fun album with some great playing. I think it was the second MO I'd heard after Birds of Fire. p.s., I had a couple of music lessons at MSU with Ralph Armstrong, the Detroit bassist who played on Visions. He stressed reading a lot. He was very encouraging to Jim and myself.
  25. Allen Holdsworth maybe?
