  1. 36 this year and still not a clue. My business went belly-up in July (more expensive repairs and depleted cash reserves) I've got two interviews next week for admin work and I'm seriously thinking about going back to college next autumn. The one thing I've ever been any good at is the one thing I won't make a living from.
  2. That looks a nice amp ! I've been searching the web to see how well it should mate with my headphones. My wife may approve of the walnut on that too!
  3. Haven't heard the Stanko, but I know that the sound on every ECM jazz recording is heavily doctored i.e. equalized - e.g. there is no cymbal sounding like on those CDs. ??? The Tord Gustavsen CDs I have from ECM are about the best CDs in my collection ... in regard to those two CDs, I can't follow your argument at all. I've been away a while from the board suffering from an acute bout of audiophilia; the prognosis isn't good Anyhow, having got some nice new headphones and still on a quest for a decent amp, I've been scouring my collection and constantly being amazed at the sound of some of my discs. As mentioned above, the Blackhawk sides are fantastic. Also, the Gustavsen albums sound like nothing else -- audio heaven, if you like the band that is --- luckily I was smitten with the music long before the upgrades came. Check out Marcin Wasileswki's Trio on ECM too. He's the pianist with Stanko's quartet and the rest of the trio appear here. Bjork fans will love the rendition of Hyperballad.
  4. Congratulations! I'm currently looking for an amp but I'm not sure what will be highly compatible with the Beyers. Again, a trip to Head-Fi will give you lots of info! Unfortunately all the amps I have my eye on at the moment are quite expensive; I'll be waiting a while but a nice tube thing should come my way eventually. Let me know how you get on. Cheers. edited for spooling!
  5. Real Love??? kidding
  6. great version on their Anthology set, live from Tokyo I think.
  7. Happy Birthday Dan! Hope those creases of late have now been ironed out; enjoy your day with your loved ones.
  8. Just finished one of these.
  9. My wife has played with (supported) the girl who taught Emily Watson basic fingering for cello; local lass too!
  10. Does it make your legs do the 'funny' dance?
  11. That's the one!
  12. Just checked the date and it's the end of November in Stockholm; would've been cold then......
  13. You've just made me go and put on Saint-Saens Cello Concerto No.1 again (Teldec), a twin helping of Jackie with Dvorak's B minor Cello Concerto on afterwards.......listened to a good few hours of Du Pre the other night. If you don't mind the audience coughing and spluttering through a performance, this is a good one
  14. Thanks, I've been spending a lot of time over there the last few days and I'm eager to test a few models. They'll be used mainly for the Grados which I believe are a lower impedance phone than some others. The Etys are great but I've not had chance to appreciate them 'out and about' yet.
  15. Just to muddy the waters further I need your collective advice on which headphone amp I should buy. I'm tempted by the Grado RA1 or the Gilmore Lite as I'm uncertain about tube amps for my first amp. Anyone out there use these or have had experience with them ni the past? Thanks, Tony.
  16. Was that referring to DeJohnette's cymbal sound on Universal Syncopations? As someone said above the last two Stanko discs were incredibly warm to my ears; Soul Of Things especially. Beautiful. I'm excited about this new release and if I had the chance I'd see them again (saw them in a small, 'proper' jazz club when Suspended Night came out). They are a truly wonderful band.
  17. To our resident vinyl fetishist/junkie* (delete as appropriate), have a good 'un. Happy Birthday!
  18. Happy birthday Bill!
  19. All the belated best from Yorkshire, Jim!
  20. Well I received those Etys this morning and I'm very impressed. the plug shapes are taking some getting used to as I feel they are about to get 'lost' inside my ear, only to be discovered at autopsy time! i'll spend some time with them and get to feel what's best. Sound sure is good though.
  21. After much indecision i've gone with the Ety ER6i; basically because of what you stated here and many other favourable comparisons against the Shures. They were shipped from the US for a total of £56.
  22. Just finished one dram of a 15yr old Bunnahabain. It's been two days without a beer so tomorrow it'll be one of these:
