Just listening for the first time to this material. Mind blowing stuff ! Makes you realise that good though the studio sessions were, to a degree they were just scratching the surface. This material also emphasises the major impact of the avante-garde on Miles (via Holland and Corea) around the time of the Bitches Brew recordings. More so than I had previously realised. Excuse my ignorance, but how does all this work? I'm on the page now with a box that appears like this:

Girl, 5, Forced To Apologize For Hugging Classmate
tonym replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Nail hit firmly on head. I worked in a children's day nursery for a couple of years and you see all sorts of behaviour being exhibited; from boys 'shooting' each other with guns they've fashioned from Lego, girls attempting to plait each others hair, kids of both sexes using the toy 'doctors and nurses' kits to "mend" each other and, at story time, you'd notice occasionally a hand-in-hand. None of this was sinister or cause for concern. Isn't affection and expression to be encouraged? What's bothering me now is that are we the minority? The ones with a modicum of common sense and human nature or is it that the decent majority are being worked over by a few zealots? I dread to think sometimes what sort of world my little boy will grow up in. -
I suppose Ornette's system of 'micro-tones' (excuse my ignorance -- I love the guy but I don't follow much of the theory behind his playing) allows him to sound 'out of tune' much of the time. Works wonderfully though.

i missed him in York last summer where he was performing with his 'regular' quintet; due in part to the sloppy organisational skills of the venue --- 'leave a message on answerphone and we'll get back to you' ......8 TIMES, when they did get back -- sold out!

Sounds good....I might pick this up soon (as well as the later ECM Rava's which I've been wanting for a while -- see how business is over the next few months!). From what I heard on Litania, Rypdal has charisma alright. did you say he'll be playing Barre Phillips compostions? Luckily in the UK, we have Music Connection who provide ECMs at around £12 inc. delivery.

Very sad news. Icon, legend and innovator. Call him what you will but what a contribution to music and what a legacy to, not so much leave behind, but to educate and enlighten. RIP.

AOTW March 26-April 1: Jackie McLean's DESTINATION OUT
tonym replied to ghost of miles's topic in Album Of The Week
I remember reading an interview with Dave Holland where someone asked him about this and he said that no, he wasn't influenced by the McLean recordings. Guy So someone else obviously thought the same... Who was it? Am I in good company???? -
AOTW March 26-April 1: Jackie McLean's DESTINATION OUT
tonym replied to ghost of miles's topic in Album Of The Week
I'm a bit late to this discussion but it is a truly great album, one of my favourite McLeans and indeed one of my favourite BNs. His sound (possibly due to recoding technique) comes across just as sharp but a bit darker around the edges on this album. I was listeneing to this last night in bed on the iPod and one thing occurred to me, and it's probably all ocurred to this bunch already but, I wonder if this particular disc is responsible for the concept and whole dynamic behind Dave Holland's recent quintets. Sure there's similarity between the instrumentation (that difference in tonal qualities and range between the trombone and vibes always has me hooked), but just the whole feel of Holland's writing and structure comes across as a latter day Destination Out. Am I talking crap? Have a listen to Points Of View and Prime Directive to see if I'm making any sense at all -
- I just bought that a couple weeks ago Tony! Any good?

After another successful quiz night at one village pub (we managed to raise almost £300 for our school -- in a village of only a few hundred people) I'm organising another, just music this time, at the 'bottom' house. Now, if anyone can think of original formats in which to present questions I'd be grateful. An example of what I'm planning on doing (in no particular order yet): Sound clips of intros from the 60's through to present (remember we're dealing with very general tastes, although there will be some closet jazz, classical and folk fans in there somewhere ) Similar 'out-ros' from songs, again same time period. A sheet of written out lyrics -- to guess the song presenting a sound montage of various moments from 'famous' or landmark albums (say 10 in total) Illustrated album cover round (with the names photoshopped out) I've put an example below General music trivia questions For the last big round I remmeber a quiz I attended from a few yeas ago where the guy played the whole of Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day' but the version with all the 'stars' doing their bit for some charity (anti drugs maybe ) and you had to name every voice on there... so suggestions for something similar please. So original ideas very welcome please. Get thinking.

This thread just illustrates how we are all drawn toward a common purpose; the appreciation of jazz. Yet in doing this we all realise how expansive that appreciation becomes. I suppose that's one of the beautiful things about the music, like a journey into unknown territory, unsure of which paths to take for whatever reason. Those gaping holes are just avenues which didn't seem appropriate at the time but one day you'll turn back and wander down them. Just take your Organissimo map with you! (and a whistle if you get lost)
