  1. After another successful quiz night at one village pub (we managed to raise almost £300 for our school -- in a village of only a few hundred people) I'm organising another, just music this time, at the 'bottom' house. Now, if anyone can think of original formats in which to present questions I'd be grateful. An example of what I'm planning on doing (in no particular order yet): Sound clips of intros from the 60's through to present (remember we're dealing with very general tastes, although there will be some closet jazz, classical and folk fans in there somewhere ) Similar 'out-ros' from songs, again same time period. A sheet of written out lyrics -- to guess the song presenting a sound montage of various moments from 'famous' or landmark albums (say 10 in total) Illustrated album cover round (with the names photoshopped out) I've put an example below General music trivia questions For the last big round I remmeber a quiz I attended from a few yeas ago where the guy played the whole of Lou Reed's 'Perfect Day' but the version with all the 'stars' doing their bit for some charity (anti drugs maybe ) and you had to name every voice on there... so suggestions for something similar please. So original ideas very welcome please. Get thinking.
  2. This thread just illustrates how we are all drawn toward a common purpose; the appreciation of jazz. Yet in doing this we all realise how expansive that appreciation becomes. I suppose that's one of the beautiful things about the music, like a journey into unknown territory, unsure of which paths to take for whatever reason. Those gaping holes are just avenues which didn't seem appropriate at the time but one day you'll turn back and wander down them. Just take your Organissimo map with you! (and a whistle if you get lost)
  3. However, I do have this so I must be exempt... kidding
  4. Should I go buy some Roland Kirk? Or Archie Shepp??
  5. Pardon me for asking, but why you selling Moose?
  6. Something Else was the first jazz album I bought. No looking back from there!

    Juma Santos???

I've just checked the Bitches Brew box and he's listed on there for playing some percussion instruments.

    Juma Santos???

Isn't it 'Jim Riley' or something, ex Miles team-mate?
  9. Shelly Manne's bit here is also worthy of a mention, especially on the opening theme to Turnaround and several occasions through that tune. Puts me in mind of Max Roach on Brilliant Corners. Not unable to use all of the kit 'musically' and remaining swinging through the bass solo. At the point where Cherry's trumpet comes in you can't help but nod your head. desert Island stuff indeed. And 1-star reviews? How?
  10. We're also a nation of Daily Mail readers too apparently. Read into that what you will
  11. Happy Birthday mate!
  12. hey Alan, you have mail!
  13. Don Cheadle would be a good choice. I really cannot think of any other big name actor who would be convincing as Miles.
  14. It doesn't suck. Now there's an understatement! You're in for quite a treat! (and what the heck took you so long to order that one? ) ....that sums up why I hadn't bought it earlier (and the fact that the record shops around here are dismal; I've only recently started buying online.... ) And you're both right...it don't suck at all. It arrived this morning. I've a feeling I'll grow to love this disc.
  15. Just ordered The Procrastinator from Amazon. Am I in for a treat?
