  1. I think Jim has nailed it. For my taste, a three and a half stars kind of CD. I could really go for a complete program of tunes like the first and last, which just ooze with that perfect KB guitar sound/tone. I lose a bit of interest on the vocals, however nice they are and some of the softer stuff. I think I will burn a CD of the best of this one and his last one on Concord ... Eric
  2. up for Chuck ...
  3. I picked up a used TOCJ a few years ago and have really enjoyed it ever since. It definitely sounds of the era, but really doesn't sound that dated to me. It is very unique in McDuff's catalog and quite frankly, is probably my favorite of his. To me, there is more burn or intensity in his playing here than on his pure funk stuff. Great pick! Eric
  4. Chuck, Is it still possible to pre-order the Eager and Rouse CDs? Thanks, Eric

    Uptown

Ha - of course - for a small fee. Does anybody have any comment on the Sonny Clark or the Hawkins? Thanks Eric

    Uptown

Go to www.cduniverse.com and type in Uptown and do a label search. Titles come out under a couple of captions, but I think that will get you there. Eric
  7. I will definitely buy this. Have most of the other stuff mentioned above. I noticed at CD Universe a bunch of Parker CDs issued by Ember. I presume they are all live. Does anyone have any insight on them? Thanks, Eric
  8. Rooster, I love AH, but IMHO, this is not worthwhile. Very meandering, plodding even. I sold my copy back a couple years ago ... Better to score Nefertiti if you don't have it - very strong! Eric
  9. BTW, Nefertiti is a great Hill trio album from 1976 on East Wind. Mostly Hill tunes and a nice mix of tempos. Definitely reminds me of the best of the BN years ... Eric
  10. I can't get this CD to play on my DVD player (which plays "normal" music CDs). Any ideas? Eric
  11. Got it last Christmas ... it is not full-sized ... maybe 5x5? It is OK, not great surprises ... Eric
  12. Rooster, Are you a member of the Urban Core? Seems like they would be right up your alley. Next mtg is 7/24 at 5:30 at the Rockhill Tennis Club. Call or email Marion Wheeler if you are interested: 816/822-8629 or marion.wheeler@kcurbancoregroup.org. Eric

    Martial Solal

This one really kicks butt ... Eric
  14. Mike does a pretty good job desribing the two although I prefer "Undiscovered" for the reasons he cites. There is also an earlier one on Music Masters, I think, called "X Field" which is even better (quartet with Greg Osby). It is OOP, but should be easy enough to locate. Eric
  15. And in classic BN Big Brother form, you are only allowed to "skip" 6 songs per hour. Thanks for protecting me. Eric
  16. I think the way to go is to select "all classics". I would like to hear the current stuff (Osby et al), but can't deal with the endless crap-ola. Eric
  17. Have it on now and they are playing a new song off the upcoming Terrance Blanchard album (Footprints). Perhaps I should have typed Blandchard - very much of a smoothy jazz feel to it. Too bad ... I was looking forward to this one. Eric
  18. I just snagged both of the Woody Shaw/Tone Jansa CDs ... very nice ... would definitely recommend to Woody fans ... Eric
  19. Great stuff. It really is sad that Woody is no longer with us. I saw him in Chapel Hill NC circa 1985 - it was a great show. I can only imagine what he might have accomplished in the ~ 15 since his very unfortunate passing. He was an original and did not give a crap about what anyone thought, or so it seemed. Where is the Woody of today??? Eric
  20. My top ten jazz lps of all time (which changes every week) usually includes The Fox. It is special. Eric

    Hank Mobley

I love this one - dug it out of the stacks in the basement last night after reading this thread and listened to it. I love the tunes here - and the playing is fun too. Maybe that is it for Hank and my ears - he is just fun to listen to. Fun if you want to listen closely and think or fun if you just want to groove. Does not try to bust your balls with hardcore playing but is hardly simple or smooth. Just good jazz ... and oh so hip Eric
  22. Not jazz, but if you know and love Blood on the Tracks (Bob Dylan), check out an album by Mary Lee's Corvette titled ... Blood on the Tracks. Her band plays it live, straight through. Very nice ... and probably better to have a woman do it than a man ... no aping of the vocals. I am usually not impressed by covers of pop material, but this is definitely an exception. Eric
  23. Great thread. Catharsis, in a sheepish sort of way. Anyway, I am not a huge fan of the early Morgan's either - Lee is fine, but don't care for the arrangements. Somethin' Else is another that (gasp) I cannot get into. Perhaps I just prefer the Miles stuff on Columbia. I also can't get into Street of Dreams by Grant Green. Yeah, great line-up, but something about it is just annoying (to me). Fortunately, my list of "hidden gems" on BN numbers about 50 ... Eric
  24. Funny, I snagged these from the Spanish BN bonanza too. I have owned these off and on over the years, never been shy about trading them back in. This time, they seem to be a little more inviting ... franky more as background than for concentrated listening. The "historical" aspect is so compelling (i.e. Lee and Freddie) that it makes me expect so much from these ... although now I think I can finally accept them for what they are. Eric
