  1. man, if MLB trade rumors is to be believed, the Gonzalez deal is dead and Jason Werth has signed a deal with....the Nationals!!!! http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/
  2. I tend to remember these sorts of things about 30 minutes before the program is on, so a bit more of a heads up this time... Interesting sounding jazz related film on before it, which I am not familiar with... 3:15pm [Drama] All Night Long (1962) A jazz band's leader thinks his wife is unfaithful. Cast: Patrick McGoohan, Marti Stevens, Betsy Blair, Keith Michell Dir: Basil Dearden BW-91 mins, 5:00pm [Documentary] Dave Brubeck: In His Own Sweet Way (2010) Executive produced by Clint Eastwood, this documentary chronicles the life and music of America's jazz ambassador Dave Brubeck on the occasion of his 90th birthday. Cast: Dave Brubeck C-84 mins, TV-PG http://www.tcm.com/schedule/index.jsp?startDate=12/6/2010&timezone=EST&cid=N
  3. Wake up you sleepyhead Red Sox fans, Christmas has come early for you guys!!! Man, I am sure some of these guys must be high on the talent charts, but their minor numbers do not impress at all...If I was a Padre fan, I would be majorly P.O.ed...though it's still early, and some other folks names will be tossed in.
  4. Didn't you just state that taste in comedy is entirely subjective??? Most people seem to think he was funny, beyond being a straight guy in funny situations...he fooled us all, that bastard! I hope it won't upset you too much, but I agree with what you said on Eddie Murphy, Dane Cook and Jerry Lewis. History of the World has some laughs in it though. I would probably watch an Adam Sandler movie before a Seth Rogan movie, which isn't saying much(though Click wasn't bad) Has this happened now???
  5. Alexander, you really need to revisit his later work.... Check out his acting at the end of this 10 minute clip from one of the 6 Police Squad tv shows(A real hack exec at ABC thought people had to pay too much attention to the show, which lead to it's cancellation) That is some of the funniest shit I have ever seen! Could someone like say, David Caruso, or Gary Sinise pull this off???
  6. I find it funny how many people point at A-rod when talking about Jeter. Because the Yanks made a colossal error, they should repeat it???!!! Not necessarily, but to give the captain , the player who led them to so many W.S. victories, a shorter, lesser contract...than A-Rod...naturally he would expect to get something similar, at least in years if not money...
  7. Ghost, and other Yankee fans...I am not a Yankee fan, as you can imagine, but the Yankees have been classless in the handling of the whole situation. They could have kept out of the media, but haven't. If you give A-Rod a ridiculous contract, why don't you give Jeter, who has been there his whole career, say 4 years??? His hips aren't wrecked from Roids, either... And if they don't give Mo 2 years, after repeatedly risking his career going longer than just about any closer does, year after year...he should jump ship too.
  8. Don't try Eastern Oregon in the U.S.; it's been the same thing here. Mark, sub zero Centigrade in Oregon???? Rainy and in the mid 60's here in Atlanta...brrr! Edit, Centigrade, Celsius....man, so glad we didn't switch from Fahrenheit! http://www.sizes.com/units/temperature_centigrade.htm Oh, Bev....great photo!!!
  9. Has anyone else noticed that when Chris puts someone on "ignore" ( I must be one of only two dozen) they constantly talk about that person? Anyway, much of what this molecular biologist/biophysicist is above my pay grade, but still...interesting...I am sure somewheres there is someone in his field that says he is wrong... http://myhelicaltryst.blogspot.com/2010/11/tsa-x-ray-backscatter-body-scanner.html

  12. There's no issue with the fidelity of the recordings, to my untrained ears. They sound fine. It's a nice box for what it is -- a generous sampling (over 80 tracks) presented in an orderly, chronological fashion, and accompanied by a very nice booklet. Just to elaborate on the packaging, the individual discs (at least in my copy) come in those cardboard slips, not jewel cases. It doesn't bother me but you just need to be a little careful in handling them. I forgot, but back when you did see jazz in the few cd stores around, I was starting to see the smaller sets, they used to be in fairly nice sturdy little cardboard boxs with 4-5 cds with that nice booklet...did they totally switch over to the trim box sets??? I was looking through my admittedly thin collection of Coleman Hawkins(Thought for sure I had that 10 cd Past perfect set, but only see a Count Basie one) and of course everything I have is out of print now This one is a pretty nice set that I would say 2/3rds was from 1939 to 1946 http://www.amazon.com/Retrospective-Coleman-Hawkins/dp/B000002WTW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1290460441&sr=8-4 Used is $12.49 But yeah, that Proper is probably the way to go.
  13. You are still not around here nearly enough, but happy birthday anyway!
  14. Rolf, I am so sorry for yours and your daughters loss! I thank you for the advice you gave with my Mom's Cancer many years ago...I used your wife as an example to my Mom of someone who didn't let advanced Cancer get the better of her. A true inspiration....
  15. Bunny Berigan...then some other dudes! Ok 1) Berigan 1A) Armstrong 3)Roy Eldridge 4) Bix 5)Harry James 6)Jabbo Smith 7)Dizzy 8)Jack Purvis 9)Ziggy Elman 10)Frankie Newton Yeah, I know, I need to listen to more post war guys...someday when I am rich...
  16. Paps, don't have either of those, but I am pretty sure they will be good! Man, depressing to see so very little of their stuff in print! Let us know what the Associated Transcriptions stuff is like!
  17. Really??? Manufactured eh??? Did you see the first link in my last post... from the Atlantic??? the writer is... James Fallows - James Fallows is a National Correspondent for The Atlantic. A 25-year veteran of the magazine and former speechwriter for Jimmy Carter, he is also an instrument-rated pilot and a onetime program designer at Microsoft. No doubt a tool of the right...This should be everyone's concern. He quoted a staff sergeant as saying... In reading your post and the most recent one from Mr. Goldberg about the War on Terror and pedophilia, I am disturbed. What bothers me is that I am on the verge of re-deploying from Afghanistan after a 10-month combat tour that involved having to deal with, among other things, conducting searches of local nationals when involved with security tasks within my Infantry company. At no time were we permitted or even encouraged to search children or women. In fact, this would have been considered an extreme violation of acceptable cultural practice and given the way word travels here, been a propaganda victory for the Taliban. So, no big deal now that what soldiers overseas can't do what we are being forced into going through??? Who cares if parents flying will have to add to their speeches to their children, no one can touch you in your private areas, except those nice folks at the TSA Where else can ANYONE touch your junk to prove you don't have some sort of explosive device on your person??? I mean, we are not talking about people who have been arrested....all for the extremely unlikely occurrence of a terrorist bringing something on-board past security, that he can actually ignite the device while in the air??? What is more likely in the future, a big push to bring down several commercial airliners ala 9-11, or to have a big attack at a major sporting event??? Who really knows, but they are not making people go though body scanners(yet) at sporting events, concerts, whathaveyou....is this the road we as a nation go down??? All for that! Jesus, I am much more likely to die driving through downtown Atlanta than flying.... Don't forget that Democrats such as Rahm Emanuel, Clinton, Biden, Kennedy, and Reid also voted for re-authorization of the Patriot act in 2006... Hey, more manufactured outrage...who could have any issues with this??? $11,000 fine, arrest possible for some who refuse airport scans and pat downs By John Lantigua Palm Beach Post If you don't want to pass through an airport scanner that allows security agents to see an image of your naked body or to undergo the alternative, a thorough manual search, you may have to find another way to travel this holiday season. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is warning that any would-be commercial airline passenger who enters an airport checkpoint and then refuses to undergo the method of inspection designated by TSA will not be allowed to fly and also will not be permitted to simply leave the airport. That person will have to remain on the premises to be questioned by the TSA and possibly by local law enforcement. Anyone refusing faces fines up to $11,000 and possible arrest. "Once a person submits to the screening process, they can not just decide to leave that process," says Sari Koshetz, regional TSA spokesperson, based in Miami. More

  19. Not suprising....he had an absolute stellar year on the mound. He deserves it. He had a GOOD year, but still nowhere near the 1.53 ERA Doc posted in 1985. Now, that was some serious quality pitching! And he was only 21. All this talk about Halladay, Lincecum, CC, Santana makes me laugh. None of them even compares to Seaver, Gibson, Carlton, et. al. Good point. However, I would argue the batters are that much better than they were back in the day. A pitcher has to be much more of a craftsman with his pitches these days. The days of just having one or two pitches [fastball/curve] have been replaced by pitches [sinkers, sliders, spilters, slurves, off speed stuff, etc] that rely on much more movement and placement. No doubt guys like Seaver, Gibson, Carlton, Drysdale, Koufax, Juan Marichal, etc would have been an anchor for any of today's pitching staffs, but they would have a hard time with guys who are a tough out. A straight-up hard thrower gets lit up a lot more often now. Just my two cents... Oh, really? Really. I know I will regret this...anywho....Gibson had a great slider, probably wouldn't have thrown Reggie any fastballs unless it was up in the zone, with 2 strikes. In 1968 he threw 304 innings, and completed 28 games. If he was playing today, he'd have a 20 Mil a year contract, and teams wouldn't risk him blowing out his arm, and there would be 4 other starters in the rotation. So, he wouldn't have to pace himself quite the same way. And he'd be in better shape in this era, as would be Koufax, etc, etc, etc.... Sandy would throw Reggie 3 curveballs better than he ever saw in his life, wouldn't take the bat off his shoulder, and would walk back to the dugout shaking his head. Another of lifes mysteries solved by me!
  20. Well, don't know yet. If Chipper retires after 2011, that would free up the money it would seem. If not, well, get a draft pick. Didn't have to give up the world to get him...really can't figure out why the Marlins had to do something in such a hurry, but it worked out well for the Braves!
  21. Jim, check out this blogger's story...it's basically what brought this to the forefront. The TSA is still after him, and might try to fine him $11,000. Though it would be a P.R. nightmare if they did at this point. http://johnnyedge.blogspot.com/2010/11/these-events-took-place-roughly-between.html As to how often I fly, my Mom worked for Delta, I used to fly 2-3 times a year back in the day, when it was free for us to fly. I could go on like someone's Grandpa about how easy it was to go through airport screenings, how one time I nearly freaked out as I realized I had a little knife in my back pocket and I had already passed the screening area. I know 9-11 changed things...but, it's one thing to have to take your shoes off...it's quite another to have to submit to full body scans that do give low doses of radiation(Still a safe amount after someone has had an MRI, chest and dental X-rays the same year?) And it is an invasion of privacy, and an assumption of guilt to have to go through one. Do they make everyone get out of their cars in NYC after that one clod attempted to blow a car up several months ago?? Since the next wave of attacks is most likely going to involve stuffing an explosive into a body cavity, are you going to be willing to submit to this kind of screening (which does on rare occasions already happen at border crossings) for all air travel passengers? I, for one, am not. I would rather take the miniscule risk of being blown up than putting up with this. This is The Fear talking and taking over the country. There are better ways to prevent these attacks than adding more layers of absurd security that 100% of air passengers must submit to. This would involve much greater attention on looking at unusual transactions. It might mean there is a larger class of frequent travelers (and pilots) who get extra attention periodically but then bypass the scanners on the majority of their trips. Most of all, it means being smart about security rather than over-reacting. Exactly! It's still infinitely safer to fly than to drive a car, but we don't insist on driving monstrosities that could withstand a 80 MPH crash with another car going 80. There is always going to be some risk in life...no way to avoid that...sane and sensible measures should rule the day. And it won't matter what we have in place if security is less stringent overseas...
  22. 3 year old probable terrorist being felt up for weapons. Those with families here, looking forward to flights over the holidays? Hey, if the screeners looked like Jessica Beil, or Jessica Alba(I ain't particular) I might not mind, but good grief! This is one time I would look forward to the ACLU jumping into something...what's next, cavity searches????
  23. EDIT to put another link back in... This started after 9-11 of course and I don't blame political parties, but the bureaucracy in place ... this just can't be allowed to continue. How can it in any way, shape or form be legal to have TSA workers put their hands on your genitals??? Mad As Hell: Airport Security Screening Protests Mount By Samantha Murphy With the start of the busiest air travel season just a little more than a week away, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has been under scrutiny following complaints that the federal government has taken airport security too far, from new intrusive body scans to intensified pat-downs. Even pilot unions have protested against airport security body-scanner technology — said to be intrusive with radiation-based health concerns — and called the alternative pat-down method too invasive. The issue also made headlines last weekend when 31-year-old passenger John Tyner posted a video on YouTube that he captured with his cell phone recording an argument with a TSA screener. More
