So...how'd the game turn out??? Just another reason to root for it. And can anyone explain to me how in football, if the SD Chargers or NO Saints are in the Superbowl, it doesn't hurt tv ratings, no one laughs??? But God forbid it's the Rays and the Reds and (practically)no one will watch???

One start makes a pitcher, and a trade it's true! Cliff Lee sucked in his first start for Texas. How many runs have the Phils driven in against a guy with a over 5 ERA??? Heh, of course, the braves were shut out the day Strausburg couldn't come in...Nats are not a bad team...well, til they trade everyone away not named Zimmerman or Strausburg

Shocking splits for Berkman. .287 at home, .194 on the road. His OBP is still every high, and has gotten hot at just the right time. Like Dan said, playing in a bandbox and forever having runners on base, should work out fine. He is still a pretty fair 1st baseman, so perhaps he and Tex will swap positions once a week or that Berkman will sit against lefties and someone else needing a day off will hit. A sick part of me wanted to see the Yankees get Dunn, to see what he could do there!

If the Phillies would have kept Lee and faced the Yanks again in the WS, the Phillies would have home field advantage and two pitchers that KILL the Yanks available to pitch 4-5 games of a 7 game series. Yep. That's pretty much what I've been saying since the day that boob traded Lee for 3 toilet flushes. THIS JUST IN: Phillies fans are now as obnoxious as Red Sox and Yankee fans!

I'm seeing a clip of John Silver, but never seen this version, so thanks anyway!

This song being track 5, Singing a Happy Song, right after the 2 minute mark. http://music.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=music.artistalbums&artistid=20618042&albumid=12339796 (did ya know you could listen to complete albums for quite a few artists on myspace??? I sure didn't til a few weeks ago-yeah, before you anyone says it, I know this isn't the complete album) Sure as hell sounds like it to me, but I can't find any info about him being on this recording! Here is the amazon info for this now out of print cd, with some performers mentioned on the back... http://www.amazon.com/Red-Nichols-Jack-Teagarden-College/dp/B0011DDB1A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1279643578&sr=1-1 Thanks for any help!

Prior owner of the Indians, Dick Jacobs, was willing to spend a fair amount. He overpaid young guys to get them to stay a bit longer (starting with Nagy and S Alomar)--trading some dollar security for an extra year of two. But no Indians players ever signed the gonzo free agency contracts, they all left or were traded. But at least Jacobs was willing to spend some. And the stars aligned for a glorious run (...sadly sans world championship) in the late 90s. At least they helped the Braves win one. How may of those guys will end up in hall of fame (Thome, Ramirez, Vizquel)? Jacobs bought Tribe for $35M in 1986 and sold it for $323M in 2000--perhaps not quite Steinbrennerian. Current owner is Larry Dolan, uncle of the guy that owns the Knicks and NY Rangers. Don't know how much money Larry has, but he's definitely not spending it. I suspect that he doesn't actually have that much. Everyone in town wishes that Dan Gilbert, the Cavs owner/gilted LeBron lover, would buy the Indians, and the Browns for that matter. At least Gilbert is willing to spend his own money to improve facilities and (try to) attract talent. I believe Cavs were a top 5 payroll team (...until about a week ago). I was always disgusted by Steinbrenner, primarily for style reasons. What an arrogant SOB. But hey George, RIP. I had heard Larry Dolan was worth 3.3 Billion. Don't know if that's adding in his brother's wealth or not...anyway, here is a blurb from an article called the Luxury Tax conundrum, from last year.... Listed below are the names of the owner's currently worth more than Steinbrenner and the teams they are currently in charge of: * Chicago Cubs: Thomas S. Rickets: $1.3 billion * Texas Rangers: Thomas O. Hicks: $1.4 billion * Detroit Tigers: Mike Illitch: $1.6 billion * Houston Astros: Drayton McLane, Jr.: $1.6 billion * Atlanta Braves: Liberty Media: $2.3 billion * Cleveland Indians: Larry Dolan: $3.3 billion * Washington Nationals: Theodore N. Lerner: $3.5 billion * Minnesota Twins: Carl Pohlad: $3.6 billion * Seattle Mariners: Nintendo Corporation: $257.4 billion (yes, you read that right. Nintendo owns the Mariners and the entire corporation is worth nearly a quarter of a trillion dollars). http://www.e-sports.com/articles/2267/1/The-Luxury-Tax-conundrum/Page1.html Now obviously, you can't say these people/companies have that sitting in the bank....still, when you consider the Pohlad family until....what, this year???? was forever crying poor, and had the richest owner in the game...that's pretty sad. Anyway, about the Indians of today, looks like Carlos Santana is the real deal! And I heard that Matt LaPorta was injured for quite some time, and now that he's healthy, and getting a chance to play full time, he's starting to put it together...The future looks better than it did right after Lee was traded....

As for Steinbrenner, I used to hate him, and he did run into a drought of a few years for going overboard....but you knew he wanted to win. And was willing to put his money where his mouth was. Billionaire owners(some who are likely richer than the Steinbrenners) like the guy who owns the Indians would rather cry poor than keep Sabathia, VMart, Cliff Lee, etc. I wonder if the Yankees and Red Sox give them money now??? And Goodspeak, owners were always greedy. Players were too, but couldn't do a damn thing about it in the past....

Guy, I have only opened my computer up for 2 things. Add memory, and put in a cd burner. It was years ago(it my have been my first computer, and only came with a cd player?) but it was extremely straightforward. Unplug old one(after turning off power to computer!) unscrew 4 screws to remove old unit, reverse order. Really just that simple. Oh yeah, you would have to remove case of course and install software.

Well, after hearing talk on ESPN after their show(People give them crap, but I don't see how they could say no to it) and reading up on the web...LeBron seems like a real asshole. But I guess most elite athletes are these days....Hats off to the Cleveland owner for saying what that city felt. http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2010/07/dan_gilbert_says_lebron_james.html And Bill Simmons wrote a very long piece before the fact that is very interesting.... http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/100708

Hey Paps, wasn't it nice for the Rays to beat up on the soft underbelly of the NL??? Sorry, that was just plain mean! Anyway, good for Longoria to go after B.J. Upton. What the hell is his problem??? Amazed he would loaf in a tie game, let alone a game where his team was playing his brother's team! Think he will be traded??? The Braves had a winning record against the AL teams this year, but Tommy Hanson had the two worst starts of his career, and in back to back games. Sure hope his arm is ok, seems he wasn't quite bringing it as fast as usual. Speaking of not bringing it...Goodspeak, did you see the speed on Lincecum's fastball yesterday??? Baseball Tonight was talking about it...90-91...no zip at all. I sure hope he would be smart enough to tell folks his arm was hurting. Perh

My Mom loved them! Interesting that they both became directors. Early Steve Martin was hard for me to warm up to. Even as a kid I found him too goofy. But, a friend and I were forever cracked up by him singing this line somewhere in the middle of the album. Grandpa............Bought a rubber! When you are 13, nothing in the world could be funnier!

Ghost, I see trying to come out ahead of time and say Burnett was likely to be bad...didn't work. Better luck next time! Diamondbacks have a truly, horrible, horrible bullpen. Starters are just so-so. In fact, when the braves played the Diamondbacks, it was pissing some of us off to see them not score against their bullpen. You just expect it. They are why they are in last place. Check out how many guys have ERA's above 6.00 http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/stats/pitching/_/name/ari/arizona-diamondbacks And I know the AL is better(though I'd love to see the DH in the NL-no purist when it comes to watching guys hitting .130 leave the bases loaded in the 4th) but there are guys like Edwin Jackson, who in theory should dominate, who has a 5.05 ERA, Dan Haren, after a great year last year, has a 4.71 ERA. Barry Zito has finally turned it around, but you look at his ERA for the first 2 years in the NL,(4.53, 5.15) and it makes the 2 years previous, in the AL (3.83, 3.86) look like they should be reversed. I was going to mention some hitters that have sucked coming over to the NL, but can't think of them right now!

Al, I have Vista, but it came with Cyberlink DVD Suite Deluxe(which I use to capture stuff of of DVD's I have recorded) and then I use Windows Movie Maker to edit the clips to put up on Youtube, etc. Very easy to use for someone like me, a dope when it comes to computer stuff. I was tickled to find they just came on my fairly basic computer, since all I ever heard was no software came on new computers anymore. Anyway, a thought to see if your computer came with these.... EDIT: well, looking around the web, it looks like that comes on HP computers(I Have a Compaq, which is part of the HP Umbrella)

Man, if you had told me a week or so ago that the Braves would take 2 of 3 from the 1st place Twins and the first place Rays, I wouldn't have believed it! And that's with Heyward being very cold(except for a homer last night-he has a bad thumb) and basically only getting walks out of Chipper Jones. Did ya'll know that Martin Prado is hitting .337, and his 96 hits are second only to Robinson Cano? And to think he was labeled a utility player. Paps, what is it the Rays need??? Just for Upton to start hitting???
-
Dan, now you are getting just a teeny tiny taste of seeing every freaking Red Sox-Yankee game on ESPN. Oh boy, another 4 hour + game, and no baseball tonight, pinch me! It's only his 3rd start, and he's struck out 22 in 12 innings. I'm sure after 4-5 starts there won't be as much coverage, but I bet ratings will be quite high.

My Dad has a tape somewheres where he recorded Jimmy Dean with the longtime St. Louis radio personality Jack Carney, back in the 70's on KMOX. I guess he had heard the two of them before...for some unknown reason the two of them made a great improv comedy team! Funny as hell. You would never guess it from the other stuff he was known for. Need to put that cassette on CD before it turns to magnetic dust.

Like this one as well... Jamie Moyer once threw a change-up against the Expos that was so slow it was swung on by a National.
-
How old is he looking tonight??? interesting chart on Moyer go down the page to pitch type and check out how consistent his fastball "speed" has been since 2002. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=1091&position=P 2 complete games this year, and 8 innings in Yankee stadium tonight, amazin"!
