Man, hate to say it, but I have to agree with the Yankees Prez. Any team that takes handouts from the richer teams, should have to say what they do with the moola. At least the brewers spend some of it, but they draw 3 million and cry like they are some teeny tiny market. I know, they don't have a tv contract like the Yankees, but teams like them(and especially, the Padres, Pirates, and Marlins) should have to show they are know just pocketing the free money... that they are using it to strengthen the farm system, and to sign some of their players long term. The Marlins did do that with a few key players, but didn't even sign one free agent this off season(at least I think I just read that)

Man, I cannot believe the Red Sox media is already questioning Ortiz about a slow start after 2 games! He should just stop talking to the media....idiots.

Since his promotion to the majors, the debate in Yankee Land has been whether Cabrera is a major league starter or a career fourth outfielder. And everybody I know recognized him as a fourth outfielder and were thrilled when the Yankees got Granderson and ecstatic when they got Vasquez for Cabrera. Don't forget the pitchers the Braves got. Mike Dunn, and Arodys Vizcaino, the real reason the deal was made. From Scout.com. The Braves acquired a potential future ace when they dealt right-hander Javier Vazquez to the Yankees last year, as Vizcaino has a world of potential in his right arm. With a fastball that sits comfortably at 92-93 mph and can reach 96, Vizcaino is already armed with one plus pitch. His best pitch, however, is a true hammer curveball that can be devastating and could be one of the best in all of baseball once he reaches his peak.

First off Dan, I hope my course language did not offend you! As for Melky, he is clearly a guy managers like a lot. He has had over 400 ab's the last 4 seasons. Better choices at leadoff??? Sure! Matt Diaz last year hit .313, 13 Hr's 58 Rbi's with a .390 OBP. in 371 AB's. But doesn't hit righties as well as lefties. Yunel Escobar would be a good fit, but he drives in a fair number of runs, hit .370 with runners on last year(or with runner in scoring position, I forget) so he hits down in the order. Martin Prado had .307 .358 numbers last year, but like Diaz, has no speed. Nate McLouth had some injuries last year but has some speed, (19 steals) and played leadoff. But between Pittsburgh and the Braves had 20 HR's and 70 RBI's. A bit of a waste to have him leadoff. Really, the Braves would be a great team to have in the AL, with the DH, but that ain't going to happen....yet!

I don't want to get New and Improved Dan worked up too early in the season, but even with the signing of Texiera, Sabbathia and Burnett, the Yankees overall payroll was $16.5 million less in 2009 than it was in 2008. At this point, finally putting a lid on their outrageous and unconscionable spending habits of the past would seem to be working out quite well, wouldn't you say? We're going down that road are we? In terms of 2009 team salaries, please note that the Yankees spent 52 Million dollars more than the next team, the New York Mets. 79 Million dollars more than the Red Sox. 88 Million dollars more than their World Series opponent. Case closed, the Yankees flat-out bought and paid for their championship. PS: Link to 2008 and 2009 team salaries. So, why didn't the Yankees win in 2008 then, with an even higher payroll??? Why didn't the mets get to the playoffs in 2009(Oh sure, bring up the injuries! ) How about the Cubs with the 3rd highest payroll??? Tigers had the 5th highest payroll. Didn't get into the playoffs. Sure, they had the money to get those players, and those players sure helped them get into and win the playoffs. Red Sox could have gotten Tex, which likely would have meant the Yankees would not have won the W.S., but they didn't. How much are the Dodgers paying Manny this year???? Could the Pirates, Marlins, Royals, or Padres afford him??? Well, yeah, but they would rather make 10's of Millions of dollars from other teams and lose games, than be competitive. Man, why do you make me defend the hated Yankees and Red Sox?

Belated thanks everyone! Don't know exactly where my head was at, but forgot to even look for a b-day thread! Sign of getting, getting....something. A female friend took me out to lunch(Sure she's married and in her 60's but hey, it sounds cool to say a female took you to lunch, right?) and my Pa took me to dinner. Man, it's hard to eat out twice in one day, but I made the sacrifice! Then I had a few slices of chocolate cake! then Once again, a music free birthday. Well, new music purchases, but thats all right, I have more than enough music. The 23 year old Berigan would slap the 43 year old berigan for taking his small cash gift to buy clothes, but hey, gotta be practical. Damn right I'm not too old! But what's this crap about a knuckleball??? I still can bring the heat! I bet with a few warm up tosses, I could hit 90. Of course I also think I could date Jessica Alba and Jessica Biel the same day as well. Delusions are our friends!

Obscure movies that you remember from your youth
BERIGAN replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Never saw this thread before! 7 years later, I can explain to Rooster why the Last of Sheila made such an impression on him. Gee, I thought Genevieve was a cute little film. Zombie movies never bothered me, cuz even as a kid I was thinking, quit shooting them in the chest, just shoot out their knees! So Zombies, Westworld, no problems...a 1975 made for TV movie, Guilty or Innocent: The Sam Sheppard Murder Case(Starring George Peppard) really bothered me! Even though the murder took place in the 50's, I convinced myself that in the 70's the killer was clearly out to kill...me! I think I slept in my parents bed for the next 2-3.........decades! A really obscure movie I recall from the 70's that no one has ever heard of. It ran on TV(but may have been a film) was about 3 women that end up in some small town(Car broke down?) and I think they are held by some bad guys, and the only way for any of them to get away, one woman has to stay behind, and that means her death! I think the last shot has the other 2 women being flown out by helicopter. It's been at least 30 years since I saw this, I and I just remember thinking it was terrible that one girl had to die so the others could live. But, thinking back on it, why would they kill, instead of just keep the one woman?? Why couldn't they go back and save her later??? Don't know who was in it, the name of the film...nothing.... -
I'm sure someone will force this into the politics forum, but it won't be me! http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/02/pl_print_conspiracy Are you kidding me? Michael Jackson's death was a total sham! Think about it! Everyone knows that Celebs never die untimely deaths!. And have you noticed that Bankers has started to act very strangely? They obviously don’t want this story getting out. I mean, what would happen if people began asking why did his skin turn white? Well, they may be able to fool the sheeple, but the members of fluoride is controlling our minds aren't swallowing their story. Look, don’t take it from me; the Sham-Wow Guy is convinced as well. But we have to act fast, because Look at what just happened to Corey Haim. I just wanted you to be aware of this, in case I disappear.

I'm going to make sure MG gets a sample of real southern barbecue at Harold's, Dean's, or the Old Brick Pit in Atlanta. Oh.... Er.... MG MG, relax! No one has died at any of those restaurants this year...so far! I too would like to meet up with you, but my finances right now are...lets just say really, really sucky! Do you like McDonalds??? Talk about your great food! -
Saw highlights of Aroldis Chapman on Baseball tonight, yesterday...even with the less the ideal camera angle, you could tell he was real good. Apparently, from those that saw him in person, better than real good! Can't wait to see some of these kids play!!! http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/joe_posnanski/03/08/chapman.debut/

There's NO way the Yankees kick Jeter and Rivera(Unless he has a major injury) to the curb. This is just the way the Yankees have done contracts. Jeter is less than 2 seasons away from 3000 hits. All the money that team has, and Jeter gets to 3000 with some other team??? There would be hell to pay. No way, no how.... Giradi??? You never know with Yankee managers, but unless they end up in 4th place at the end of the season, I imagine he will be back as well.

Well, searching on the web, I found another test...I could hear up to 18 kHz,(turned volume up much higher to hear it though) but no higher. Actually, the 8 kHz really bothered me! http://www.noiseaddicts.com/2009/03/can-you-hear-this-hearing-test/

I don't know, I have often wondered about that...only thing I can figure is Amazon don't want to make it too easy for folks to buy new stuff under what Amazon themselves sell items for... -
