Has Blue Note Europe abandoned copyprotection?
Swinging Swede replied to Claude's topic in Re-issues
European EMI titles were released in the Cactus Data Shield format from July 2003 to May 2006. The last Cactus batch was the one from May that included Cannonball Adderley, Stan Kenton, and the aforementioned Jazz Crusaders. After that they returned to Red Book CDs, including the June Connoisseurs. Not that there has been any official EMI statement about it. I wonder why they abandoned such an improved format? -

Which jazz artist has recorded the most leader albums in one year?
Swinging Swede replied to Dmitry's topic in Artists
In Jimmy Smith's case, if you include albums that were partially recorded in 1957, you get a whopping 17: A Date With Jimmy Smith, Volume 1 A Date With Jimmy Smith, Volume 2 At The Organ, Volume 1 At The Organ, Volume 2 The Sounds Of Jimmy Smith Plays Pretty Just For You Cherokee Jimmy Smith Trio + LD Groovin’ At Smalls’ Paradise, Volume 1 Groovin’ At Smalls’ Paradise, Volume 2 Groovin’ At Smalls’ Paradise, Volume 3 (not released, I know, but enough material was recorded for a third album) Lonesome Road House Party (2 of 3 tracks) Confirmation (2 of 3 tracks) The Sermon! (1 of 3 tracks) On The Sunny Side (1 of 8 tracks) Special Guests (2 of 6 tracks) -

It's either Oscar Peterson or Jimmy Smith depending on how you count. In 1959 alone O.P. recorded the following 13 albums: A Jazz Portrait of Frank Sinatra The Jazz Soul of Oscar Peterson Plays the Duke Ellington Song Book Plays the George Gershwin Song Book Plays the Richard Rodgers Song Book Plays the Jerome Kern Song Book Plays the Cole Porter Song Book Plays the Harry Warren Song Book Plays the Irving Berlin Song Book Plays the Harold Arlen Song Book Plays the Jimmy McHugh Song Book Plays Porgy and Bess Swinging Brass with the Oscar Peterson Trio If you include co-leader sessions you get 15: Sonny Stitt Sits In with the Oscar Peterson Trio Ben Webster Meets Oscar Peterson -
There is also a whole unissued LD Argo session from 1965, plus some unissued tracks from the other sessions. A Mosaic seems like an interesting idea in this case, although I suppose that if all Argo sessions are included it should be a regular Mosaic set rather than a Select. Some of the Argo albums, but far from all, have come out on CD in Japan, btw. This might be a good place to also mention that there are three "rejected" LD Blue Note sessions from the 1971-1975 years. None of the albums from that period have come out on CD either. Thus LD's 1971-1975 output might be another Mosaic idea, although I realize that the material probably is too "commercial" for what Mosaic usually puts out.

LOL, I was thinking the same thing!

Folks, don't miss the Coltrane/Getz/Peterson encounter Jim posted (even if it's not YouTube) ! I'm a Getz fan, but I must say he pales beside the mighty Trane in this performance.

Dorothy "Dodo" Greene 1920-2006
Swinging Swede replied to White Lightning's topic in Miscellaneous Music
What was Jutta Hipp, a transvestite? I've seen this claim, that Dodo Greene was the first woman to record for Blue Note, before. But really, how can anyone overlook Jutta Hipp who had several Blue Note LPs under her own name? She's not a woman, because she's German?! And if we include sideman sessions (or should I say sidewoman sessions), these women also had recorded for Blue Note: Vivian Smith (p) on the Pigmeat Markham session in 1945. Lorraine Geller (p) on one of the Best From The West sessions in 1954. Jutta Hipp (p) in 1956 obviously. Sarah Bavo (voc) on the Sabu Martinez session in 1957. Dottie Dudley (org) on the Leon Eason 45 session in 1959. Shirley Scott (org) on Stanley Turrentine's "Dearly Beloved" session in 1961. In any case, I picked up the Dodo Greene Connoisseur several years ago and remember noticing an obvious Dinah Washington influence in her. And Dinah Washington is probably my favourite female singer. Haven't listened to the Dodo Greene in a long time though. Will have to rectify that soon. -
That's the concert where Stan Getz joined the Coltrane group (or should I say Miles-less Miles group?) on two numbers (and Oscar Peterson replaced Kelly on the last of those two). I think someone mentioned on this board recently that a video exists. A DVD should come out of this concert!

Mel Gibson drinks truth juice

Yes, in Swedish too (hardly surprising). That was the first thing I thought of when I saw all this FN business, since one is so used to seeing those initials meaning just that. -

Rachel McAdams is Canadian too. And this is what Wikipedia has to say about William Hurt: "Fluent in French, Hurt maintains a home outside Paris." Oops! -

I have no idea how the match will go, although I fear the worst. Sweden has played well, I think, but has been unable to score goals. England has perhaps not played so well, but has scored goals at least, which is what the game is about. What's clear after the match earlier today however is that both teams will want to win the group, to avoid meeting Germany - and Argentina in the quarterfinal. Sweden can not only think about winning though. If they lose and Trinidad & Tobago beats Paraguay, T&T could actually qualify instead of Sweden!

The Gormally incident seems to be true, at least it has been widely reported that way. And Aronian is terribly gifted, he can probably learn a lot of things well! **************************** The Times June 10, 2006 Love me for my moves on the board, says chess queen By Raymond Keene and Rajeev Syal BEFORE this week Arianne Caoili was a beautiful but little-known competitor on the international chess circuit. That all changed when The Times broke the story of how a British grandmaster attacked the Armenian World No 3 when he was dancing with her in an Italian nightclub during a tournament. Now, in her first interview since the incident on the dancefloor of Hiroshima Mon Amour in Turin, Ms Caoili, 19, is keen to address a few misconceptions. Despite being described around the world as the “Kournikova of Chess”, she said: “I want to be known as the Sharapova of chess, rather than the Kournikova — known for both my brains and beauty.” She loves the game because it is “fighting for the mere pleasure of fighting”, adding: “There is nothing like arguing for the mere pleasure of arguing. It is my weakness to sometimes start a random friction between myself and another to test reactions, psyche, get amused, or simply to relax.” Ms Caoili started playing aged 5 and took up chess seriously when she went to live in the Philippines, her father’s home. At 14, when she stopped playing to concentrate on schoolwork, she was an international master who had competed in Europe, Canada and the United States. She recently took up the game again and now hopes to study law and international relations at Oxford University or in Germany. But her desire to be taken seriously has not stopped her throwing herself into modelling and taking up singing. “I am currently recording songs for my first album,” she said. “And I am looking for a recording company.” Ms Caoili’s website lists her personal interests as, among other things, “philosophy”, “getting up to no good” and “fine food (and fine boys)”. It was apparently a fondness for Latin dancing that started the trouble during the Chess Olympiad in Turin last week. Ms Caoili claims that she told Danny Gormally, the England No 10, that she wanted to be “just friends”. Later that evening, she began doing the salsa with Levon Aronian, Armenia’s star player, when there was a commotion. “Suddenly there was a scrum and Lev was on the floor,” she said. “Fortunately Lev was not badly hurt. Danny might have punched the wrong chessplayer, since I was supposed to be with the young German grandmaster Naiditsch that evening. He was my official escort,” she added. She believes that Mr Gormally, 30, whom she has known for years, may have been drinking. The next morning the England team captain apologised to the leader of the Armenian delegation, who is also the country’s Defence Minister. Mr Aronian enjoys star status at home, where chess is a national obsession, similar to David Beckham in England. He also accepted the apology. However, when Mr Gormally went out for coffee, he was apparently attacked by Armenian chess players bent on revenge. He returned home before the tournament’s end. Friends of Mr Gormally said that he had developed an e-mail relationship with Ms Caoili. On her website is a message from a Daniel Gormally quoting the Stevie Wonder song My Cherie Amour. It says: “mycherieamour, lovely as a summers day, mycherie amour, distant as the milky way . . . oh sh** where was i? lol. for my good friend ari may the sun always guide her to her destination.” Ms Caoili declined to say whether she was in a relationship with Mr Aronian. However, her mother, Annette Caoili, told an Australian newspaper that they were romantically involved. Mr Gormally declined to return calls or requests for an interview. -

If I may jump in here ... one of the gals above is Australian No. 3, WIM Arianne Caoili, 2169 who has caught a lot of attention lately. Worth fighting for apparently. To the right in the picture above is English grandmaster Danny Gormally, who, during the Chess Olympiad in Turin recently, knocked down Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronian (No. 3 in the world) to the left, when he saw the latter dancing salsa with Ms. Caoili. Some say that it's the best thing to have happened to chess in a long time! -
