  1. Well you may not be an audiophile but your comparison of the SHM versions of Joe Henderson's State of the Tenor with the 80s releases of the material was quite on target - I totally agree with you - and it is what caused me to buy the SHM versions. Thanks again.
  2. Speak Like a Child is another one I was thinking about getting again. You are saying the SHM of Speak is disappointing compared to SHM Maiden Voyage? that is bad news... again my impression is that Maiden Voyage was one of the recordings that has not sounded right on CD to me... but I am encouraged by your report on the SHM version of Maiden Voyage.... it must be really improved.
  3. I didn't call you dishonest ... read my post... I said that if you are suggesting that you don't mind people changing the subject on you when you are talking in person to people .... then I find that statement to be dishonest.... as I said I don't believe anyone likes that. You were the one who made the analogy between live conversation and the discussion in threads here and I make a comment on that and then you tell me I am not using an apt analogy.... It's YOUR analogy dude ....Sheesh I wonder why you can't read erwbol's posts? Can't we just talk about Bootleg Vol. 3? For the same reason I can't read his since his return from absence. The guy plainly likes to divert any topic he participates in to his own current preoccupations. He also likes to pick fights with people he knows he fundamentally disagrees with anyway. (For example with Lon over cables, hi-fi equipment etc.) I'm not saying Scott is a troll, but I do not care to read most of what he posts. I'm sure some people don't care about my posts either. That's fine with me. that's what I suspected.... thanks erwbol for clearing it up.

  5. I am sure that you, like most people, are just thrilled when you are talking to someone in person who interrupts you and abruptly changes the subject. I am sure that you immediately accept that what you were going on about was really not important and that a subject change is just what is called for. Not an apt analogy, sorry. Steve made a general point, and almost everyone participating in the thread responded, and the conversation continued on naturally. Even the person who started this thread said he had no problem with it. You're the only one complaining. It is not an analogy. I was responding to your statement that you wonder if those who complain about thread drift here on the Board object to people changing the subject when having conversations in person - the implication being that you have no objections. I was responding to that particular statement and suggesting that you are not being honest if you say you welcome subject changes in discussions. I am not the only one complaining here....at least erwbol complained and others too...but you like to leave things out. But I am tired of this so let's just drop it, ok?

  7. Hope I can return the favor!!!!
  8. Which versions do you have? The Maiden Voyage SHM is certainly an improvement on the BN Works. Generally very dynamic, and the horns are much better defined, better detail on the drums as well. Very pleasant on the ears. Impressive. I have only the RVG... I do not keep more than 1 version of any cd I have... don't have the space... I have the RVG because I thought it was better than any prior version... yet still not without problems.... have you compared the SHM to the RVG?
  9. Lon... did it get moved back? I thought that Amazon initially had it on March 4th?
  10. the downside is that when a thread becomes as hijacked as this one has and your interest is in Bootleg vol.3....you have to wade through a lot of unrelated material to get to what you want....particularly if you have not been following contemporaneously... say you just start reading it a month or so from now... again if what you want to know about is Bootleg Vol. 3... it turns out that now it's only about 20% of this thread.... lots of good stuff here... but lots of work to dig it out. Sometimes it makes sense to start a new thread or pick up an old one. For example... I got very interested in the japanese Blue Note SHM cd thread and later wanted to know about whether the Ornette Coleman Atlantic recordings had received similar treatment....thought about asking the questions in the Blue Note thread but thought it was a bit off topic... remembered that there had been some discussion of various Ornette Atlantic reissues a few years back and decided to revive it there.... not saying you need too many rules.... but sometimes I have given up on a thread I found initially interesting because it had morphed into something else.... regretted it but stopped reading it and ultimately I probably missed out.
  11. yes....what was this topic orginally about....Agharta... Hamid Drake... I forgot
  12. Yes. I personally prefer the WPCR reissues, for a variety of reasons. I sold my "Beauty Is A Rare Thing" box set, even though there are six tracks you can find nowhere else (not even in Japan). I think the 2012/2013 WPCR Coleman discs (selling for 1000¥) are very good (not perfect). My favorite from this particular series is Ornette On Tenor. That one, to me, does sound excellent. (I just love that record, too — it's still overlooked, in my opinion, compared to other Coleman records.) For The Shape of Jazz to Come and Change of The Century, I would probably not purchase from the WPCR (1000¥) series. I would look for earlier Japanese editions or the hybrid SACD mentioned above. This post (of mine) either makes things a little clearer ... or a lot less clear. Thanks and what about that box set called "Six Classic" albums which comes out of Europe I think and has the first six Atlantics by Ornette? The "Classic" sets are generally pretty shoddy, using copies taken from anywhere. As an example, half of the Gigi Gryce set is taken from mp3 sources, presumably downloaded from the net somewhere. I'd keep well away from them if I were you. Thanks HeadMan for the Heads up!!!
  13. that's why I never bothered with those Bach, Beethoven and Mozart guys ... I mean who cares!!!

  15. Yes — I said that. Just like yourself, I played my vinyl of these albums more than the box set. I don't own the vinyl any more, and actually just sold my copy of the box set last week. I've been enjoying the recent Japanese reissues (prefix WPCR) of Ornette's Atlantic work quite a bit. There's a thread on this board where the general consensus on this reissue series (as a whole, not just the Ornette reissues) is that it's too loud — i.e. compressed and ear-fatiguing, but I'm not hearing that as much on the particular reissues I have (Ornette!, Ornette On Tenor, and For Whom Who Keeps A Record), maybe, in part, because some Atlantic sessions were recorded at low levels and (to me) can benefit from some (judicious) compression. I have The Shape of Jazz to Come and Change of The Century on earlier Japanese editions, and, to me, they sound amazing. I grew up with this music as a teenager, it's imprinted on my brain, and I don't mind the hunt for (so-called) "better" sounding editions. But, short answer — if you know this music in its original vinyl order, the Japanese editions retain this order (which I think is hugely important for The Shape of Jazz to Come in particular), and I think they sound pretty good. If you do a search for WPCR and Ornette Coleman on CD Japan, it should pull up all the current reissues. The previous series had AMCY as its prefix. My favorite Ornette Atlantic album, This Is Our Music, is being reissued in Japan on March 26th. I never liked the sound of the Sepia Tone reissue, and hope this new reissue at least sounds different. The music of course is staggering. Some of my very favorite Don Cherry solos contained therein. Thanks so much Late.... have you compared these WPCR reissues to the Beauty is a Rare Thing box issued in the US?
  16. thanks to everyone for the helpful information!!!
  17. Is it still the case that the Beauty is a Rare Thing is the best sound reissue of this material? I have this box and the sound is good... but as someone recently said on this board (but now I can't find it).. sometimes I wish they had sequenced this box in the order of the original LPs rather than chronologically... so I wonder if good sounding versions of the original lps exist on cd. For some reason..(probably makes no sense) I played the lps when I had them more than I do this box.
  18. interesting... thanks Lon.
  19. Has anyone heard the Maiden Voyage from this SHM series? I never have been really happy with any of the versions I have of this... wonder if there is a problem with the source tapes.
  20. Just got confirmation that Import Cds is shipping my copy of A New Conception.... only 2 days after they said it would be available... so I guess that is not bad....
  21. Thanks everyone. I placed an order with them a couple of weeks ago and they sent out part of the order. However, "my account" at their website shows that none of the order has been shipped. I often have to enter information twice to get into my account on their site. Also, even though the other cds are available as of yesterday anyway, they have not shipped. Responses to my emails are a bit slow... and yes the packaging is a bit thin. Prices are good.
  22. Curious about how you rate their service.
  23. how much do I like the band...yes that is right and that is why I was expressing reservations about Grossman as a saxophonist for Miles.... but what folks are saying is that the his best solos got cut and that even if you don't like Grossman, Miles and the rest of the band are so on fire here that you would like it anyway or at least I think that is what I am hearing.
  24. Back to the Bootleg Vol. 3 box coming out next month... so many positive reactions here are making me rethink my initial reluctance to get this box....

    Bob Dylan corner

yeah ... I guess the bigger point is whether an artist like Dylan should be a pitch man for a car company. You may be right that the issue was more about spending some money on imports and do your big buy at home, but I got the impression that he was saying Germans make better beer, the Swiss make better watches, the Asians make better phones, but we Americans make better cars. About the beer, I would have totally agreed with that statement 30 years ago... it is no longer true. Not that German beer isn't marvelous.... it would be stupid to say it isn't.
