Since I became a fan rather late in the game, I do not know whether George Jones can be labelled a singles artist. In the last five years or so I have purchased cd sets that relate to his Mercury and Musicor years - not sure whether the material in those sets (which are wonderful by the way) came from singles or albums. I do have a couple of albums on cd by George including the wonderful "Golden Ring" with Tammy Wynette (the former Mrs. Jones) and several tributes to Hank Williams and I am sure there are more out there but perhaps much of his work has moved to the complete set type of agenda. By the way, I agree with Jim about "He stopped Loving her Today" is pretty much an entire concept album in one song....but you could say that about "The Grand Tour" and a bunch of other songs. As an aside I think "He Stopped Loving Her Today" is given too much importance in the George Jones canon - wouldn't crack my top 10 George Jones songs. My three cents.

This one is really good, it's a 2-disc compilation containing tracks from all of the major labels he recorded for: http://www.amazon.com/The-Essential-George-Jones-Country/dp/B0000028LN There's also a repackaged version (the earlier one was in a longbox, the repackaged one is in a regular double jewel case): http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Spirit-Country-Jewel-Case/dp/B000009RBG Unfortunately, both versions appear to have gotten pretty expensive. Not sure if this has been the case for a while or if it's a temporary situation brought on by his death. THis is is tough call, but if I was to get just one I would choose the double cd Essential George Jones on Sony - the one with just the picture of his face on the cover (and not a bad haircut either). I think the selection of songs is even better (although there is overlap) than the one Dave is suggesting and the Sony one has great sound at about $15... covers many classics over many years and a bunch of labels.

One of my favorite singers. He will be missed.

Loved his music. In addition to writing some pretty great songs, I loved the way he reharmonized and changed the melodies of songs that others had written.... he was just brilliant.

The preamp is a Conrad Johnson PV14LS and is separate from the amp. THe amp is not the problem because when I switched the interconnects from the preamp to the amp - the noise switched channels. THat's how I determined it was the preamp. Finally, I tried several sets of tubes last night and it did not affect the noise. I also noticed that the tubes placed into the noisy channel did not glow as brightly as the normal channel. I may need to send this one back to the factory. Anyone have any experience with Conrad Johnson's service?
-
thanks Larry and Lon I don't have an earphone jack - so I can't do that test, but I don't think it is speaker related. There are only 2 tubes in the whole preamp - I switched them and the sound continued in the same channel - makes me think it might not be a tube. Lon - what is tube rectification? Do you mean can I adjust the bias? The answer to that is no.
-
I'm getting a sound like rushing wind out of one channel.... I switched tubes but the noise did not switch channels... so probably not a tube? Any ideas?

do you put the cds in the paper sleeves? Don't they seem awfully tight? I was worried about scratches and so cut part of the sleeves to make them looser.
-
Rebecca Martin is on Disc 4 - initially I had the same reaction you did but I am liking her vocals the more I listen
-
I just picked this one up as it was on sale at J&R and reasonably priced for 5 cds. Not everyone will like the packaging as the discs fit into paper sleeves (too tight - but I cut them) but at least it is very compact. This box features Motian-Frisell-Lovano- Haden on Volumes 1 and 2, adds Lee Konitz for Volume 3 and then he gets a whole new band including Masabumi Kikuchi, Chris Potter, and others including a vocalist for Volumes 4 and 5. WHile I love the Paul Motian Trio (with Frisell and Lovano) I had heard volumes 1-3 before and had never really warmed up to them... not sure why, much preferring the BIll Evans and Monk tributes or albums with Motian's original compositions to his interpretations of Broadway classics. But I am warming up to them now (maybe because there will not be any more new Paul Motian albums) and of course Volumes 4 and 5 are a whole different band and I am finding that at least engaging on first listen.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

well said! kh - I think that might have been my reaction... but who knows maybe you get accustomed?
-
See the above - I think that what is so galling about Mehldau's comments is that Mehldau seems to be so obviously influenced either directly or indirectly by Evans. I guess I suspect he doth protest too much. I think JonRaney said it pretty well above.
-
Yes, but what about Kikuchi? Yes, but what about Kikuchi?
-
I like what you are saying here. By the way, I think the best Evans/Hall collaboration was "Intermodulation" not "Undercurrent".
-
Have you guys heard Masabumi Kikuchi? I am thinking particularly of Paul Motian on Broadway Vol. 4. Great piano player but his vocalizations sound like Peter Lorre being strangled.
-
I got Knucklebean and played it. My initial reaction was a bit lukewarm. The playing is quite good on the soloing, but the writing - almost none of it by Bobby himself except for a reprise of two great 60's compositions- is not so great. I get the sense of a definite how do I say it 70s jazz sound that tends dangerously close to smooth jazz - especially that opening bass line on track 1. I am not complaining to those who recommended it to me....and further plays may improve my estimation.... just giving my first impressions for what it is worth.
-
Interesting ... I have a similar impression of T-Bone... particularly his singing is way more refined than most blues singers I like... but I think ultimately I prefer a rawer type of voice that supplies more emotion.

I got mine from Amazon at $20.00 US. was that a mistake?

Justin Timberlake + Comedy = Greatness?
skeith replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I don't much care for JT's music, but yes he seems to have some comedy chops... whenever he is on SNL it is usually funnier than most recent episodes.
