sorry to hear this happening to one of my favorite actors

What ticked me off was his "let Germany make your beer"....I guess Bob is unaware of the craft beer movement sweeping this country for the past 30 years.... Yes the giant beer makers suck, but American craft beers rank with the finest in the world... so while I do enjoy some fine beers in Germany ... sorry Bob the Americans do a helluva job on beer.

Do you have release information past February 26th? After checking HMV and CD Japan, I couldn't find any information past the initial list of 100 titles. I should be noted that there are more Blue Note SHM cds than on that list at the beginning of this thread and do not have the TYCJ catalogue number.... my Joe Henderson State of the Tenor came out before the list, has a TOCJ catalogue number and is nevertheless and SHM cd.

I for one am very thankful for the reporting by these and other members on this board about their impressions of releases....helps me.

2 solutions: 1) Buy a good reading magnifying glass (available at Barnes & Noble in the book light section) 2) Scan the liner notes and view it on your computer screen, where you can magnify the size. yeah,....thanks.. I know I can do that ....just wish it had been handled in the booklet. Thank you Lon, David Ayers, erwbol, and Late for your comments comparing the SHMs to RVGs.

To answer my own question — yes, the new TYCJ has the original Mel Fuhrman overdubs. The disc (I received it this weekend) also has a much wider soundstage than the 1989/90 edition that Malcolm Addey worked on. Both sound good — I'm not going to ditch the 1990 disc. I've always loved Dewey Redman's entrance on "The Garden of Souls" — creepy, and who else has ever played like that? On the new TYCJ, you can hear finer details on how he's achieving that weird sound; soundstage-wise, it "appears" from the top-center, and fairly descends through Elvin's drums. Bizarre, in the best of ways. I think I like how Elvin's drums were handled better on the Addey edition, however, but maybe I'm just hearing how they were originally recorded. The TYCJ's I've heard so far aren't too loud. (They are louder than McMasters.) They (the TYCJ's) compare quite closely with the Blue Note XRCD's I've heard. At times, horns sound too aggressive to me (on the TYCJ's), but I think that's because I'm so used to listening to the Blue Note Works TOCJ's. While I'm enjoying this new series, I won't be abandoning my TOCJ's. For my system and preferences, they're probably still my favorite. But, agreeing with comments above, the Monk TYCJ's sound good, and are a considerable improvement over the RVGs. In contrast, I prefer the Miles Davis TOCJ's to their new TYCJ counterparts. I don't know if any of this helps board members here. My impressions of this new series so far are positive. The artwork is being carefully handled (it's much finer than the TOCJ artwork) — one example is that the TYCJ of New York Is Now! brings back the color artwork that was on the back of the original LP. Nice touch! The inner photos (some of them entirely new to me) are also nicely presented. The bonus tracks are great. I hope this series adds at least another 100 titles. Your comments on the TYCJs are helpful Late ... I have not heard the Monks yet in order to make a comparison. Just a quick note on the artwork....I only have the Henderson State of the Tenor Vol. 1 (technically not a TYCJ but yes it is SHM) and the artwork looks fantastic....my only quibble is that I wish they had put the liner notes in English in larger print in the booklet.... the mini size replica of the back cover liner notes are too microscopic for me to read. But the sound on this SHM release is gorgeous.

As others are noted here, based on the one SHM version I got (Joe Henderson - State of the Tenor, Vol. 1) this series is a dramatic improvement over domestic cds issued in the mid 80s like the Joe Henderson. I am wondering if this SHM series even improves on the RVG series, which in almost every case I am very happy with. I am almost afraid of what you guys may answer.....

Joe Henderson Trio at the Village Vanguard
skeith replied to Durium's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
The first quote from a couple of years ago suggests the recording might be flawed to a certain degree, although the first (and only) CD mastering was apparently an improvement over the vinyl. This new 2013 remastering proves the recording was much better than might be concluded from the eighties releases of this material. Both the music and the sound had me spellbound with a big grin on my face. I just got Volume 1 of this japanese version and I totally agree that it sounds way better than my domestic cd version. Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention!! -
thanks Guy, jeff and B for your helpful comments

guitar players - best method for putting on new strings?
skeith replied to skeith's topic in Musician's Forum
I put on new strings to my acoustic - wow big difference in sound. I didn't have much problems with the wound strings (bottom 4) wrapping nicely around the tuning peg (if that is the right word) ... the top 2 strings (unwound) didn't wrap as nicely and I got a couple of overlaps which is apparently a no-no. Anyway sound is so much better I can't believe I waited almost a year to change strings... I think the deterioration in sound quality is so gradual you don't notice it. -
Steve Grossman is among my least favorite 1970-75 Miles saxophonists, but I second this - he sounded a lot better on the April and June stuff that was not officially released. Haven't listed to this stuff for a while.. but my memory of it is that I was disappointed by Grossman....so I am wondering if I should get this box when I have much of this material live with a better version of the band. Do I have it wrong?

I happened to be in a TJ Maxx in Mount Kisco NY yesterday and they had one of these box sets (which includes the vinyl 2 lp set, the cds including the extra Tanglewood live concert only available on this box) for $39.99 - it was sealed and brand new. That is one hell of a deal that someone should get and it may be at other TJ Maxx stores. I have no connection to TJ Maxx

Miles Davis - Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel CD set
skeith replied to bebopbob's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Congrats Lon... it is great to get something long sought after. Hope you enjoy it. -
What is the best method for putting on new strings so that it stays in tune for acoustic guitars? Some recommend wrap around the the peg on the head stock before inserting it into the hole... others say kink the string at the hole....others have fancy over and under recommendations for the string wrappings around the inserted string. What works for you guys?

The box will feature unedited versions of the heavily chopped-up music on At Fillmore. There's nothing from Black Beauty on this box as far as I can tell. thanks!!
-
so if we have Black Beauty and At Fillmore we may already have some of this material or has that been determined?

Let's hope the Professor had a threesome with both of them!!!

Ok.,,,I get that this journalist may have known nothing about the music... but did you listen to the interview? It seems to me to really have an edge ....as if he wants to embarrass Lennon or expose him as not the working class type he claims to be. Just a vibe that I get from it.
-
Ok..;. so we need some Brits to comment!!!
-
I have been listening to these and enjoying. One thing I wanted to comment on and get your reactions. Listening to the BBC interviews with them at the end of each disc and in particular the interview with Lennon, the BBC interviewer keeps asking questions about how big Lennon's house is and how many rooms and establishing that he owns a Rolls-Royce... and goes on to comment about that he parked it in a no-parking zone and whether he feels that owning a Rolls entitles you to behave that way and then what sort of private school Lennon will send his son to etc. My impression, perhaps wrong, is that the interviewer is not overtly but subtly hostile (maybe that is not the best word but I cannot think of another at the moment) and it is a bit surprising given they were media darlings by this time. I sort of wish Lennon had said something like "hey look at least I did not inherit this money, how did you get yours?" Do others get that impression from these interviews?

Not until the 80s, at least! 'Hissing' was heralded as virtually the Second Coming when it came out in 1975 in the British rock press. I can remember reading the reviews in the late summer and being really anxious to hear the record that was being trumpeted as some sort of radical departure for rock music. For once the claims were born out by the listening. My favourite moment is the guiar playing and Joni's vocal phrasing on 'Don't Interrupt the Sorrow'. The miracle of Hejira is that it goes somewhere else again - where Hissing seems to be Joni looking at the world around her, Hejira seems to return to her looking within herself, but with greater maturity. Hissing adopts different instrumental approaches from track to track; Hejira seems much more unified in sound. I really like ' Miles of Aisles' - it has the feel of a real concert. The LA Express may not be groundbreaking musicians but I like the alternative arrangements of songs that were mainly quite spare on the original records. 'Clouds' has a lovely arrangement. I really enjoy the run of Joni's records from the first to Mingus. I've never connected to any of the 80s/90s things but I did like the two heavily orchestrated things she did in the noughties (or was it earlier?). Haven't heard the last one. Hey Lark I enjoyed your insightful look into Hissing and Hejira and Miles of Aisles...really some great analysis on your part... the only point where I disagree (sorry but I have to say this) is on the LA Express arrangement for "Clouds" (actually the title is "Both Sides Now") - the riff that comes up through the song is a bit cliche and the coda at the end actually is so corny it is irritating... but that is just me and I suppose that is why I prefer the guys on the live album Shadows and Light and even more prefer to be hearing Herbie and Wayne on MIngus. I agree though that overall Miles of Aisles is a lovely album and an underrated work of hers.

are these jewel boxes or mini lps?

I find this website a bit confusing.... several cds I looked at do not indicate out of stock, but at the bottom of the listing it has a box to "notify me when back in stock" or some such language.... I guess that means out of stock? When it says "unavailable" right next to the item it means that it can't be (pre-)ordered from them yet. When you tick the "notify me when back in stock" box and give them your e-mail address they'll let you know when it's available. I was looking at Henderson's State of the Tenor cds - I do not see "unavailable" next to the items and I see they came out months ago and yet it says further down below the item "notify me when back in stock" I do not get it... what am I missing? Thanks I clicked on the link you posted and the discs on that page were marked "unavailable". When you search for Joe Henderson's State of the Tenor on their site you will find that 2 of the 3 discs listed (2 of them Japanese) are in stock and ship "within 24 hours", the other one in "5 to 10 days" - I guess that's the one with the "notify me when back in stock" box when you try to order it. thanks... it is just confusing to state ships in 5 to 10 days and then also a notify me when back in stock
