  1. Am I the only one who reads the NY Times? Yesterday's edition had a big article on Jarrett in anticipation of his trio's performance last night at Carnegie Hall. On the front page of the Arts section in the article about Jarrett they have a photo of Chick Corea which they identified as Keith Jarrett. Must be some real youngsters working in the editor's room.
  2. Sad news... great player... my favorite is the one led by Bill Evans called "Intermodulation"
  3. I had a computer problem and now I get this "New content" stuff in a window on the right hand side of my screen- BUT it is making the rest of the material on the forums smaller. How do I get rid of this new content stuff on the right hand side of my screen?
  4. What a shame he only lived to be 17!
  5. Not unexpected, but very sad news.
  6. But the larger question is are any Brits taking crack other than Nigella Lawson?
  7. thanks Larry. Also for those in the US who had this done.... does insurance cover these implants?
  8. Not sure what she is up to lyrically on "Cotton Avenue." Probably not as much depth as one might want to assign to the meaning. It may be just a sort of warmup to "Mingus." yeah Lon I think you are right... after looking at the printed lyrics (very tiny on the cd release) I think I was way off on the meaning of the song
  9. from the more personal songs like "talk to me" and "off night backstreet" yes
  10. I just got Don Juan's Reckless Daughter (available from EU ... no US production?) and like other recent purchases from these mid to late seventies Joni - I like this one too and wonder how I got sucked into a lot of negativity that was directed towards these albums. I don't think Don Juan is as strong as Hejira or Mingus, but I like it based on a few initial listenings. I like Paprika Plains..;could do without the Tenth World drum track (it's fine but seems out of place)... I find the opening track Cotton Avenue a bit weak... what is she saying here... on first impression I was wondering whether she is making some commentary on rock stars or artists being like "slaves" or am I reading too much into it....anyway a bit murky. As many of you say, Silky Veils is a great track. Some recycling going on here ... one track has the Coyote sound very close and Dreamland sounds like that track on Hissing of Summer Lawns (Boho Dance?). I like her imitation of a chicken. Nevertheless a good album and I am enjoying it. Seems she was visiting Miami around this time.
  11. thanks everyone for your comments!!
  12. I recently had a tooth pulled and now must make a choice between these two. Anyone have any experience with dental implants or with this choice?
  13. Bebop So sorry to hear about this... I will keep you in my thoughts these days.
  14. Just saw this thread.... I am pleased about the progress and my best wishes to you both.
  15. For the Roses ... yes I agree and think that one is as good as anything else she ever did... at least what I have heard. There was a live bootleg LP that had (I think) fairly wide distribution titled "Lennie and Dom Songs (Early On)." There's no recording date listed on the album, but the Net seems to think it was 1969 or 1970. Sound quality is OK. Songs are: Chelsea Morning, Cactus Tree, Night In The City, Marcie/Nathan La Franeer, Rainy Night House/Blue Boy, For Free, Get Together (The Youngbloods' song; great version), The Fiddle And The Drum, I Think I Understand, Both Sides Now. What about Shadows and Light - isn't that also a live album? Is it any good?
  16. Yeah... for me too I still think that is my all-time favorite... but am discovering some of these later works that I dismissed at the time and they are much better than I had imagined.
  17. I take it you do not like Don Juan's Reckless Daughter... which I am now considering.
  18. Yes, I agree Lon... and I think what some objected in the lyrics of Goodbye Pork Pie Hat were some of the inaccuracies about Lester marrying a white wife and being chased out of a hotel room.... which I don't think happened but I am granting poetic license.
  19. I just picked up the album which followed Hejira ... the one called "Mingus" and I like it very much, even as much as Hejira and I had always been told this was a bad one. The little taped segments ... the what would normally appear to be clunky lyrics on God Must be a boogie Man and Goodbye Pork Pie Hat... it all works for me.
  20. Ok, I finally get Hejira.... bought it for something like the third or fourth time. I am such a big fan of hers but Hejira had not in the past ever really clicked for me.... I suspect that it has to do with my perceived lack of really strong melodies or perhaps "hooks" (probably not the right word) compared to earlier albums. I can probably hum the melody to most of the songs from earlier records which I can not do for Hejira...and yes the melodies of the songs seem to be not that different between the songs... but Hejira is really growing on me now.
  21. I saw Lou Reed at several jazz gigs I have attended over the years in NYC. More than once I saw him at a Sonny Rollins gig... and he was a very enthusiastic audience member as I recall.
  22. that would piss off the white anglo saxon protestants in Washington....
  23. About 10 years ago, I was driving through much of the Navajo Reservation, which I believe is the largest native american reservation in the US. I passed what appeared to be several public schools and was surprised to see references to what I guessed were the name of the sports teams of the schools which were "the Braves" or "Warriors" and the like... I do not remember seeing any references to "Redskins", but I was surprised at what I did see. But there have been complaints about the Atlanta Brave's name....but maybe it is an issue of we can call ourselves that, but you can't? I don't know.
  24. I saw that too Lon. First I was shocked at the color of his skin tone... much lighter than I remember and I have seen him in person.... I hope it was the TV makeup or is he doing a Michael Jackson? The thing I remember is that he kept saying that Parker could improvise at "digital speed" ... a concept that he never explained or else I just did not understand it. Either I am dumb (probably) or he is a phony.
  25. Not sure what the Cleveland fans did to irritate you.... but I want to relate a little story. A few years back while in Cleveland I decided to go to Progressive Field and watch them take on the Yankees. About a half hour before game time about 20 buses rolled up outside the stadium and those buses disgorged probably a couple thousand Yankees fans. There were so many Yankee fans in Cleveland for that game that when the Indians scored or had a good defensive play the boos were louder than the cheers. THe loudest cheers at Progressive that day were when the Yankees scored.... talk about obnoxius fans... you had to wonder which effin' city you were watching the game in.
