  1. Ok, if you have the Cellar Door box set you get all the live stuff from Live Evil without the edits or the annoying narration on Inamorata and it comes with better sound. The Jack Johnson box gives you the Hermeto stuff from Live Evil. That leaves only one studio track that would not be covered by those two boxes. My question then, is there any reason to own Live Evil, other than sort of a best of set from the Cellar Door box for those that don't want 6 cds of Cellar Door material?
  2. In the NY Times, the obituary below the one for Sam Rivers was for a Joseph Farrell, not that one of course, but my eyes did a time warp double take.
  3. I take the song to suggest that the singer is telling another to go across the Mersey, but he is going to stay put. I suppose that could be one interpretation.
  4. Ok, I have liked this song for years and always wondered about the meaning. It would seem that the singer prefers where he is (presumably Liverpool?) and is suggesting to the one to whom he's singing that you can go, but I will stay here. Is that all there is to it? Was this some sort of saying or expression at the time? And if you take the ferry ... you would be going where... to Liverpool or away from it. If away, is it just to some suburbs of Liverpool? (If so, big deal, that would be sort of like saying ferry cross the Hudson for New Yorkers) The song seems to be loaded with sentiment and it would seem to mean something big... so I wonder if someone can provide some context.
  5. Just got the bad news. He was one of my favorite tenor players and composers.
  6. Lon, did you get the Mahavishnu Orchestra box? If so, any comments?
  7. thanks guys for your responses
  8. Just curious as to whether anyone has had any experience with these.
  9. The title of this set proclaims it is the the complete Chess MASTERS right? My brief perusal of the box shows a lot of alternate takes - those aren't masters are they? Or what am I missing?
  10. Listening to this the other day, two words came to mind. Charles Mingus! Not that it's derivative of Mingus and I am not putting Hemphill down - on the contrary. It just sounded like the kind of music Mingus would make.
  11. I don't read it that way. I think Ethan means that's when Motian's "mature style" finally starts to emerge. Perhaps, but what do you make of his comments on Motian's playing on the 1961 Village Vanguard Recordings? In one sentence he says Motian was seen as "Max Roach without the chops" which he says has a "kernel of truth" and then goes on to say that the best parts of his drumming on those recordings are the silences. I think this is just dead wrong.
  12. I found Iverson's tributea very moving, but some things were hard to agree with. On the famous trio recordings at the Village Vanguard 1961 - Iverson says the best part is what he leaves out. I find the drumming on those recordings - even when he is actually playing - to be sublime. Also he singles out Trio '64 as when Motian comes into his own - Iverson seems to imply that Motian finally got his chops together. THis has never been even remotely near the top of my Evans or Motian recording favorites.

    Tube life

Lon, mine is a french cd player - a Metronome CD2V - which uses two 6N1P tubes - apparently made only in Russia.

    Tube life

Lon, This was right on target. I just changed the tubes in my cd player which I had not done for years. Wow - what a difference! Because of the slow deterioration, I had not really noticed it. PRobably the best $20 I have ever spent. Those who just wait for the tubes to go, you may be missing a lot.
  15. Any particular one work well for you? I know these are sold, but not everything sold works.
  16. Thanks and that's interesting because such a cloth was supplied with the unit, but as I said the manual said to use it on the cabinet, not the screen.
  17. Thanks B. Goren for your tribute And yes Lark, I agree the Scorsese film is a beautiful tribute.
  18. With the owner's manual there was a cloth provided, but the instructions say it is for the exterior, not the screen. Is there a safe way to clean and not scratch the screen? My owner's manual amazingly says nothing about this. I assume the computer screens are the same and have the same issue?
  19. I wish I had been there. I never saw the band, though I'd seen Jerry Goodman with The Flock at the tail end of the Fillmore East. Hey Philly, we're the same age and both Brooklynites. I knew I liked you for some reason or other. And you went to high school at Midwood? That's about 7-8 blocks from my boyhood home! I preordered the box only because it has the extra disc with more Central Park stuff. If it has the Mar Y Sol cut that's even better. Philly Q - is the box only available from PopEater? Is this newly remastered? As far as I know it's only available from popmarket. According to something I saw(maybe on Hoffman), the live disc is remastered IIRC. Thanks PhillyQ - I meant Popmarket. Any get their copy yet?
  20. Thanks for posting that one. I thank you also
  21. What a tremendous musician and composer and what a history!! He will be missed.
  22. thanks BFrank. Interesting observations, but why he calls it "bizarre" I am not sure. Strange word for what he was describing.
  23. Any thoughts on the music? I noted the NY Times review particularly praised the Copenhagen set, but I am finding that each of the three concerts have particular pleasures. I find that the best version of each tune is almost always at another concert, so that one concert is not definitive.
