  1. The Wolverines. Also the date with Tommy Dorsey on bone --where they did Davenport Blues. Bix and his Rhythm Jugglers.
  2. Interesting to compare Wild Bill Davison's (Commodore) solo with Bix's. Wild Bill plays some of the same licks, but in different places. edit to add: Wild Bill's record consists of a rather subdued opening ensemble chorus, a piano chorus and a more intense closing ensemble chorus. It's during the closing ensemble that Wild Bill plays these licks. The contrast with Bill and bix is not only that he plays the licks in different places, but also where Bix plays the lick softly, Wild Bill is shouting it.
  3. My 2 cents - If Lonehill has a good reissue - get it! If the legit label ever issues it - get that also.
  4. I've had the Verve stuff with hodges and Green for years. Great stuff...but, really, how can it NOT be good?
  5. I see your point and don't disagree with it but I see myself more in tune with Bunk's response to the situation.
  6. Yeah..didn't figure Kima as a rat.I
  7. Yes, never occurred to me but that also rings true. MG Another factor for the reaction against Disco is is that Disco was above all dance music. A large segment of the white male audience doesn't dig dancing and hence went more for the metal, punk, etc where the dancing skills were minimized. Actually I think many of the people who like Smooth Jazz and Smooth Soul also liked Disco. IIRC "The Quiet Storm" programming on Radio was really a precursot to the "Smooth Jazz' statiions.
  8. Last night was episode 58. Just 59 and 60 remaining, with 59 available with ON DEMAND as of today. In 58 the major event was Omar's demise. Chris had it right - the writing was on the wall. Omar shouldn't have been out there exposed and in one of the scenes preceding his shooting a bunch of children run from Omar - except one. Omar ignores the remaining kid. I had a fleeting thought at that point that the kid was going to shoot Omar from behind. I need to review this to know if it's the same kid. There's a bit of black comedy in Omar's demise - and the show has been described by someone involved with it (I forget who) as a comedy. McNulty is getting in way to deep - I hope he comes out OK. The politicians - a bunch of slimeballs all. How true to life.
  9. I have the original, which is probably one of the greatest Brasilian albums ever. I've never heard the re-record; it would be interesting to compare. I have both versions and love them both. I can't really say one is better than the the other, only that they are different and I'm glad there are two versions,. No Vinicius deMoraes on the 2nd version but there is a guitar overture that is just terrific.
  10. It's all music and categories are really arbitrary to a large extent anyway. In my case I go through phases where I'm listening to more of one thing than another. Sometimes more R&B than Jazz, then more Brazilian than R&B, but never to the the total exclusion of ANY of them. I never think I'm going to listen to some jazz now or some rock - rather I think of an artist I want to hear. Then I'm off on a tangent for a while. A cliche' but it's apt here. Variety is the spice of life.
  11. My two cents before this thread fades - don't miss either the Johnny Hodges or the Wingy/Prima if you have any inclination towards small group swing. Lon's comments are right on (as usual) . You can't EVER get enough Johnny Hodges and the Wingy/Prima moves increasingly from it's 20s start into very good small group swing with guys like Pee Wee and Chu Berry.
  12. Plus - I like the printed material - notes and photos - that come with the real thing.
  13. I thought the BIxology set sounded pretty good on a good system eqed right.
  14. I don't know, but that's an escape worthy of Houdini.
  15. I think I read somewhere not to expect this to wind up with all loose ends tied. I'm wondering if Marlo will be one of them, although I think Omar is going to get the better of him. It's a testament to the good writing of this show when you root for someone like Omar and feel badly over the demise of Prop Joe.
  16. Great show! I was surprised by Prop Joe's demise. Very sudden and in all actuality, Prop Joe was a gangster, but the somewhat the brains of the whole operation. Are the Greeks going to deal with Marlowe now? Is Omar going to suceed in icing Marlowe? "They think we are Greeks."
  17. I scored the Monk, Dizzy. Blakey, Duke, and Trane. They had the Pops, but I already that.
  18. What blows me away even more than that, if you read that thread, is that there is market for $50 audiophile pressings of ZZ Top albums. Why not just go to the Goodwill?
  19. Yeah! Not only is the electric bass swingin', but this guy is swingin' with a pick. It's all the player. Electric, acoustic, picks, fingers. The player makes the groove.
  20. Have a little taste...
  21. Good article. I'm in total agreement. The over compression of much of todays music makes it unlistenable for me.
  22. I like the Verves too..and they've really been ignored. I don't think any of them have been in print since the early 60s.
  23. Don't know that I had ever heard of her either, although I probably saw this Groucho show when I was kid. As I recall, You bet Your Life was on Saturday nights and we always watched it. Great stuff - great stride!
