It's hard to single out one label - his work is pretty much what it is. If you like it - you'll like most of all of what you can get.

What's This Grammatical Device Called?

Him and the horse on which in he rode. -
Clark got a writing credit on that tune. I wonder what he contributed? I wonder if Dee Clark was credited on the Dovells' record also. I can't remember which was released first. IOW was the Dovells record lyrics to an instrumental or vice versa? I guess if it was the former Dee contributed for sure Yusef told me it was Dee Clark's voice that is heard on the Phil Upchurch record. During the drum breaks he says (for instance) "play it, Joe!" Also, it's awhile since I listened to this track, but am I correct in remembering that there is both Hammond and acoustic piano on this record? The electric bass is probably Phil Upchurch overdubbed - the Hammond is playing bass also.

Thanks for posting this king ubu. One correction tho. Edmund Hall, Charlie Shavers and Vernon Brown were also on this date. I don't think so (oh, but yes, it's smokin! - my introduction to the jazz organ, this single). The personnel I have for this 45 is Mack Johnson (tp) David "Bubba" Brooks (ts) Cornell Muldrow (org) Phil Upchurch (g,el-b) Joe Hadrick (d) I don't know who Cornell Muldrow is but I don't think he's James Booker. (Hadrick, by the way, went on to become Willis Jackson's drummer and stayed with him until Gator's death. He was called Yusef Ali, on later Gator LPs.) MG Joe Hadrick is who told me that Booker played that date. For some reason Cornell Muldrow didn't play the date. Muldrow was an organist from Baltimore (Joe's hometown) jand with the exception of Booker this was the backup band for Dee Clark.

I have to hunt for "Junco Partner" - you guys got me interested. I have three lps. Classified on Demon Records. Outstanding band with Booker here. Red Tyler, James Singleton and Johnny Vidacovich (who is one hell of a drummer.) James Booker Vol one on JSP New Orleans Piano Wizard Live on Rounder. Don't know if any of them made it to cd. I bought them all in the late 70s or early 80s. I like all of them. I also have an Ace 45 that I don't remember the name of. Booker is also the organist on the Phil Upchurch recording of "You Can't Sit Down." A smokin' record if there ever was one !!

Bix Restored: I'm astonished by these transfers

Let's not leave Bill Challis out of this discussion. His charts added a lot to the Paul Whiteman band. -
2007 was the year of a developing interest in Brasilian music for me. (only 40 years too late) I listened to a lot of Jobim, Vinicius, Baden Powell, etc. in addition to my usual jazz diet.

Not sure - I haven't been to that one for a couple of years but I'll be going there this summer. BTW - that's about the only Borders where I've really found some good deals on cut out or just plain cds they weren't selling. I found quite a few Ace or Flame (British) cds there a few years back for $1.99 !!

I pretty much feel the same way, except that I found myself in this particular store frequently - at least 2 or 3 times a month if not more. It's in the same mall as some stores that my wife frequents and I would kill time in the Borders - consequently (with the various coupons) I would do a fair amount of impulse buying. Now I'll just grab one of those seats in the mall and dig my ipod. At any rate I'm glad that the whole chain isn't going - There's a couple of others in my area that I occasionally go to and I also make it a stop when I'm in Alexandria, Va. or Bangor, Maine, Two places I find myself in now and again. Thanks Berigan and T.D. for those links.

The Borders nearest me (West Belt Mall near Willowbrook in Wayne, NJ) is closing in late January. Everything in the store is discounted 25% to 50%. I asked the clerk if all the stores were closing and she said no. I mentioned it to a friend and he mentioned that Walden Books (associated with Borders) was going under. Anybody know anything?

Another very nice recording I have by Frank that has not been mentioned so far is Chicago Jazz Reborn by Dave Remington (Jubilee 1017). I don't think this has ever made cd but it's a good date where the band is intentionally playing very Condonesque and with Frank playing PeeWee and Jim Cunningham sounding remarkbly like Wild Bill Davison, it's a pretty interesting and good record.

I'm familiar with him through some of his recordings. Sorry to hear of his passing. As you said - a fine musician.

mcgriffs 1970 followup lp
Harold_Z replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I haven't heard the tracks in question, but if it's a Sonny Lester production on a Jimmy McGriff date, two names to consider on tenor would be Joe Thomas or Connie Lester. -
hey Phil, Hope you feel better real soon.

I think Return To Forever was the first lp with the original group with Airto, Flora and Joe Farrell. Then with Light As A Feather it became Chick Corea and Return To Forever and Airto, Flora and Joe were soon gone. I'm thinking big ego and band leader BS came into play - but that's just my suspicion. At the time the grapevine had it that Chick was a miser with the bread.
