It would be funny if he sang just like Little Walter.

They always miss the point , don't they? It would be funny if it weren't so FUCKED UP !

Revisiting a classic. It's been at least 30 years. Homer's Odyssey. The E.V. Rieu translation.

Sad news. RIP Joel. He produced a lot of records that I think very highly of.

Little Willie John - I need a better compilation

Sue was owned by Juggy Murray. It was located on 54th street near the corner of 8th ave - across the street from the municiple parking lot on 8th ave between 53rd and 54th. There was a studio on the premises and my presumption is that all or most of his records were cut in that studio. 1650 Broadway is still extant. Today the niteclub Iridium is located in it. In the 50s at least through the 70s it was loaded with independant record labels, publishers and producers. There were at least two recording studios - one in the basement (Aura) and one on the 7th floor (Can't rremember the name). The Colony was located a couple of blocks south on Broadway. I think Broadway and 49th. It moved a block or two north since then. -

Screw all of you lazy bastards!!

A series of apropos cliches......... No matter how you cut the cake.. the horse left the barn... The cat is out of the bag... It's all over but the shoutin'... It's water under the bridge... That ship sailed... The record business has been Hoisted by it's own petard.

Only thing I can think of he would have to get those notes with some other fingering (plus chop english?) and hence another sound ?

Agreed, but the Lock and Griff stuff is pretty thrilling too. Now THERE'S a battle of the titans !

I dig Jaws. He always keeps me interested.

WELLLLL.......... Fun is in the eye of the beholder for one thing. The other thing is we don't really even know what the writer means by jazz. Let's face...we're an island unto ourselves. We got our own thing goin'.

Oh..and I say the above as an attendee of the very exclusive Bernie Nierow Annual Coffee Fest and Roast.

I just stumbled in here myself - I had assumed it was about an audio program I didn't use. WOW! Ya never know, y'know? Gotta say my attitude is more in line with Chris, Sangrey, 7/4, Clem etc. It's a thread--threads grow - they move into varying fields of discussion, sometimes lead to new threads. It's life as we know it on the bulletin board circuit.

Thanks Durium - I went over to your blog and watched Fats. I had seen this before but it was great to see it again. A few years baack RCA da centennial series and put out some discs with cds and dvds together. One was a good collection of Fats and it contained this and a few other Fats video features.

Happy Hanukkah to all!!

The only realistic way most of us can help is through voluntary donations. Subscription only has it's merits but it effectively keeps out almost all newcomers. Maybe Jim can can post a suggested donation or we can pony up say $25.00 on January 1, 2008 with the idea of sending a similar amount every three months. Jim can let us know if that covers things. If it's inadequate we increase.

gibson launches self tuning guitar
Harold_Z replied to alocispepraluger102's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I like what you said and the way you said it It's really a crappy idea......actually a gimmick, because even if it works the way it's explained - the bridge will still need periodic adjustments for the guitar to really play in tune. I can just see some birdbrain who can't tune a guitar insisting that he's in tune because he bought a guitar with this gimmick. In the meantime his bridge needs an adjustment and he doesn't have a clue as to what that is. -
This thread has to be the fastest growing thread in the history of the board. None of us want to see the Big O go down. Here's hoping that somehow things pull through.

I still listen to a lot of FM. I'm fortunate in that both WKCR and WBGO are local stations for me. WBGO is devoted to Jazz and WKCR broadcasts (a guess) around 12 hours of jazz a day and sometimes more when they have a birthday broadcast devoted to a specific artist. Most of my radio listening is done in my car. When I travel Jazz stations seem few and far between. There's one around Philly that I sometimes can find and a few years ago I think I found one in the Boston area. I'm not sure if either of those are still going. So in general I would think the state of Jazz Radio (broadcast) is pretty bad, but I happen to live in an oasis. WBGO's programming is pretty varied - new releases mixed in with reissues and some of the giants - Miles, Pops etc. Also shows like Jazzset and Live From Lincoln Center. WKCR is more thematic in it's programming and is more likely to devote a three hour show (or more) to a specific artist. If it's someone you like and you stick around to listen, you are very likely to hear rarities. Great station.

The Corner was great. So is The Wire. Both are extremely realistic and well acted. I know a few people who refuse (can't) to watch either show because of the baggage that either show brings them. One aspect that I think the show emphasizes but the viewing public overlooks is the portrayal of inner city politics. It sure works for me and for where I live.

Record companies are unfathomable - espescially budget things. Which I'm sure you guys already know. When I was a kid a bought a budget lp on Rondo-lette. The cover was a fount of mis-information. It proclaimed "Jam Session - Sidney Bechet, Muggsy Spanier vintage 1946." That was about the extent of any information. It turn out to be the 6 o the 8 tunes from 1940 Bechet - Spanier HRS session and 3 tunes from a Rex Stewart 1946 record date with Barney Bigard and Lawrence Brown. The record's sound was actually pretty good too.

All of the above! Great record! The "Lover" Brownie mentions is indeed a great track. It's the Rodger's and Hart "Lover" and was something of a showcase for Jack Teagarden. Two other versions by him (neither under his name) that come to mind are one with Louis Armstrong (a live version with the all stars - I think on Satchmo At Symphony Hall, or perhaps Satchmo In Boston) and one on Jump records that I don't think ever made it to cd with Charlie LaVere and his Chicago Loopers.
