  1. Chris - Isn't that about the handiest gadget for listening to music on the run? When I lost the first one I couldn't wait even one day to replace it.
  2. So the original building is still there? The building at that address looks like a small building constructed specifically to house offices. It's the size of a house but not the construction of one.
  3. Years ago I read some of the Stark novels. Great stuff. I've read other Westlake also and like them all.

    BFT #61

Durium - I don't remember the name of the group who did Giant Steps. I lost the mp3 file when that computer crashed and I can't remember who sent it to me.
  5. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYBODY!!!!

    BFT #61

Ok – I've finally gotten a chance to post. I've had the BFT on my car stereo and listened thru a couple of times. I'm going to post my impressions. First off -Thanks Durium – It's all good. I enjoyed every track. IMHO there were no clunkers. These tests can be real humblers though- I really have no positive ids. 1.Looking Good But Feeling Bad - Good humorous version. 2.When You Wish Upon A Star – Nice Bird like alto in a smoky mood. 3.Django – Very nice version. They hit the “Gypsy Jazz” feel pretty nicely when they go into tempo and in the out of tempo parts the guitarist states the melody beautifully. Nice chops. guitar 4.People – I get very bugged when I can't id something I think I should. Nice. 5.Don't know what and don't know who. Nice playing all around. 6.Almost sounds like “Grandpa's Spells” in the front but then the changes go elsewhere. Cute. 7.A Pretty Girl Is Like A Melody – Very Hot Club like. Latter day Stephen Grapelli is just a guess on my part. Nice record. 8.A nice whimsical little piece. Electric bass on this. 9.Dippermouth – Liked it, but no idea who. The trombonist managed to play a lot of Dutrey's licks but put his own “english” on it. 10.Salt Peanuts - A Dixieland version! Hah! Made me laugh out loud. Dig the quotes from El Manisero (The Peanut Vendor) by the trumpet. A while back – on my previous computer- somebody sent me a Dixieland version of “Giant Steps”. I had the same reaction. I Loved it. 11.The Sheik Of Araby – A stride/boogie rendition. Wild guess – Joe Turner? 12.In My Solitude - Two basses and a piano. Nice. 13.A piano quartet 14.Piano trio playing a blues. Again I'm bugged because I can't id the player. Monkish but not Monk. 15.With A Song In My Heart – Nice playing all around. 16.Our Love Is Here To Stay – Nice trombone duo with rhythm. Good playing all around. 17.Evidence - again Monk but not Monk. Monk is unique. So when a pianist does a Monk tune and goes ….Monkish I'm not thrilled. It's too much of an effection. Then on the other hand why shouldn't a good player do whatever he wants to? So I'm conflicted about that issue. 18.Looking At The World Through Rose Colored Glasses – It's a nice way to see the world. 19. The tag. Now to read everybody's posts.
  7. RIP Freddie. Playin' MF!
  8. Jeez! I know that building. There isn't a house there any longer, just Doctor's offices ..and I've been there as a patient! It's across Prospect ave from the main building of Hackensack University Medical Center. I've also been to the Englewood RVG studio. Not as a patient.
  9. Ok Durium - I'm in. I can use the download links.
  10. Happy Birthday Jim !
  11. Yes. Dick Cary is the pianist.
  12. I haven't seen the movie so I can't know for sure, but there are live versions of Dear Old Southland in addition to Pops' first recording hat Jazztrain references above. One that comes to mind is on the Complete Town Hall Concert that was releasd on RCA. I think there is another live version that appeared on Decca and there is definitely another studio version that is on the Decca "Autobiography" set.
  13. ...And a great time was had by all !
  14. The first bunch of tunes on the Decca list look sort of look like the track list for the "Live at Symphony Hall" lps which have a recording date in 1947. Maybe the original releases were on 78 - hence the part one and part two..
  15. Avakian: "Although the sidemen were not terrific" etc. I'm just old enough to remember how the general vibe with jazz critics was that the All Stars weren't very good and Pops played the same solos and it was a set routine etc etc. Now, as then, I listen to the record (and I was fortunate enough to see Pops live a few times with Trummy and Barney) and I think what were the critics missing. Trummy and Barney swing like mad, Arvell Shaw and Barrett Deems are totally locked and the proof is in the pudding...The WC Handy and the Fats Columbias are among the high spots of an already high caliber career. Certainly some of my very favorite Pops. Producing is interesting. I can see where a good producer is so plugged in to a performance that he hears every flaw. BUT to hear flaws enough to make you state the that people like Trummy Young are "not terrifice" .............??
  16. Great stuff! Thanks Berigan.
  17. Yes, thanks! I haven't seen Bob Wilber since the late 60s. I would not have recognized him.
  18. I worked there in the summer of 1968. It was a rock/R&B joint by that time with go go girls. They had 4 bands a day and 4 shifts of 4 girls per set. Continuous from 12 noon to 4:00am. I worked the 8:00pm to 4:00 am shift. What a factory! I remember an agent named Sal DiGrande booked it exclusively.
  19. Charlie Shavers, Chris?
  20. Kearny, New Jersey, just northeast of Newark, historically was an area where many Scots and Irish immigrants settled. Ridge Road, the main shopping thoroughfare in town has at least 4 or 5 pretty authentic fish and chips eateries. Good eatin'. Scottish meat pies also!!
  21. Yeah, but is it in the Definitive set? iirc it was in both the Bechet and Hodes Mosaics. The Runnin' Wild cd contains almost the two lps that were issues on BN. Again iirc and if I had time to go check my holdings, Runnin' Wild substituted a couple of alternates, maybe because the original takes were on another then available BN cd. BTW - for my two cents - the BN lps I have of this stuff (issues from the late 50s or early 60s) sound better to me than any of the subsequent issues I've heard.
  22. They released also his BN recordings: Thanks Lon. I already have the BN "Jazz classics" vols 1 & 2 on LP. Have I already got the best part of the BN material or is there much more sensational music to explore in the set? MG MG, There is at least two lps worth of Bechet with Wild Bill Davison. Wild Bill is at his best on these dates. Another lps worth of a session with Jonah Jones and Jimmy Archey. Also pretty potent. I have it all on 5 blue note lps and then the mosaic set which adds quite a few more tracks that weren't on the original lps. In any event - the sessions with Wild Bill are indispensable.

  24. I'm going to have to put it in the shop today. I ran avg - that showed no virus, but I was unable to run ad-aware. I tried to reload but couldn't. a lot of different things are popping up. Folders don't open. When I restart I get several messages that this and that is not working. All things that I have no idea what they are. I can't operate the things that might help such as system restore and I can't download spyware. The internet is ok so far. Hardrive failure? I dunno. My pc is less than two years old. Into the shop.
  25. Thanks Lon - it is on the ipod. Since I last posted this morning I noticed a few problems on other applications. I could open a game, graphics looked slightly different, etc. I tried another system restore and the pc didn't let me. Then I had to leave for work. When I get home I'll do a virus scan and try again. That probably exhausts my computer acumen. It's into the shop tomorrow if that doesn't work.
