The whole centennial series is worth getting. I have all of them except one (I think the Artie Shaw) and I'll be lookign for that one too.

I remember that. You mean the one where Ali gets pissed with Sly and Mike Douglas gets pissed with Ali. That's when talk tv was TALK TV ! Nothing scripted there! Along similar lines was the show where Milton Berle gets pissed with Richard Pryor. That stuff was all for real. I wish tv was that loose now.

The little band on that show wasn't bad at all. The bassist, Jimmy DeJulio, sounded VERY hip on that show on both upright and Fender.

Someone said to play Johnny Hodges lps at 45 rpm and..VOILA ...instant Bechet. For the most part this works. Just to spice this conversatiion up a little....I heard an interview on the radio with Gerry Mulligan where he out and out said Coltrane was "terrible" on soprano. He loved him on tenor, but ...soprano?

Pretty much what Lon said, but I'd maybe put a little more emphasis on the quality of the sound here. If you don't have any of the previous issues this is a good place to dive in. For the material and "theme" presented here if you wanted to go further You could go to the "Complete" Bix set if it's still available and the various Jazz Oracles under Jack Teagarden's name. All quality reissues with great sound by JRT Davies.

Friday and Saturday Night at The Blackhawk" on lp when it first came out. Shortly after that I picked up "Kind Of Blue".

This is the one to start with. It's the cd reissue of the Vanguard lp above (minus one track). Great stuff. Everybody is playin' on this one. There is also a Storyville cd under Vic's name. I have it home, but can't recall the name and can't find it online. Vic w. Red Richards, etc. Reaaallll Nice !

I'm curious about some statistics. For starters...what percentage of students play an instrument today as opposed to various decades in the past? If it is a declining number (I would think so) is it a steadily declining number (again my suspicion)?

I DO think she was extraordinary. Dig those curves! Maybe growing up in the 50s and 60s has to do with it. I dunno, but Marilyn, and Claudia Cardinale, espescially are great looking women to me.

Vic was a stone gas. I'm fortunate to have seen him play many times. He ALWAYS played !

This is terrific! Pops in a variety of settings with a lot of greats. Trummy, Jack Teagarden, Ruby Braff, Tony Parenti, Lou McGarrity, Bud Freeman, Cutty Cutshall........all of them are here. Anybody know who the drummer is with what is billed as the Bobcats, but looks more like the Lawson-Haggart Jazz Band? I have to get that Satchmo The Great DVD Lon posted.

Listening to the samples reveals two tenors. AMG just mentions Marvin Cabell, but doesn't offer a full personel. It's just speculation (maybe someone with the recording can verify who the other tenor is, or if he was listed at all), but with a tune called Buddy Boy I think there is a possibility that Buddy Terry may be on this.

I think Percy played on a later Bill Doggett recording of Honky Tonk and I think I have the record. Doggett recorded it at least 5 or 6 times over the years.

I saw her play frequently in the 70s. Great player. I didn't know she had passed - sorry to hear that news. There was a small place (tiny !) in Clifton NJ that she used to work solo - I think one night a week for a long time. Can't remember the name of the place, but it was only five minutes away from where I live so I used to stop in frequently if I wasn't working. Dill Jones had a night there also. As I rembember she was living in Hackensack. She had a brother who was a good trombone player - can't recall his name either. GEEZ !

Any chance of getting the counseling here instead of in AZ? With an idea towards NOT making the move? Does Catrina like NY? I dunno. It's a rough situation. My first reaction is "No. This is where I have to be and the kids will have to get used to it." but maybe that's too hard nosed in today's world. Maybe I would lean towards let's give it a little more time here to see if things sort out, while weighing the pros and cons of the move. You probably don't want to move the kids in the middle of a school year, so that would mean no move before June of next year. But another dynamic is HEY - you're in a household with what? 3 other people? If you're the only one that wants to be here, you're in trouble.
