It's that time again. All the best, fasstrack!

What clubs/venues are active these days, downtown/Society Hill/South/Rittenhouse/Penn's Landing? I'm aware of Chris' and Ars Nova and am following both. (Going to miss Uri Caine and Dave Douglas on Friday, which leaves me bummed.)

Stereo Jack's In Cambridge, MA not closing!
BeBop replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Jailbreak! Busted out of work this afternoon for a dash to Stereo Jack's. His smallest sale of the day, though it's damn rare I buy anything, so there's that. Second-smallest sale after the guy who bought nothing, I s'pose. Had to leave behind a nice looking Ernie Krivda on Inner City I hadn't seen before. No way to carry an LP onward to Los Angeles and Phila. -

What live music are you going to see tonight?
BeBop replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Jazz Worship at Old South Church in Boston My only opportunity to see any music while in Boston. Appeaing venue. Not sure what the music will be like. But gotta do it. 11 weeks in New York, 1.5 in Kansas City, 2 in Los Angeles, 3 in San Francisco and never made it to any music. Wanted to try to get to Wally's instead (another early-opening venue for jam session at 6:00PM), but it's just a few blocks too far. -
Stereo Jack's In Cambridge, MA not closing!
BeBop replied to Kevin Bresnahan's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Indeed I'm there, which is to say "here". Unfortunately a trip to Cambridge doesn't look like it'll be in my plans. Just no time. Bummer. -
Bay Area jazz radio station KCSM reports that Pete Douglas passed this morning. Great promoter of jazz through his 50-yearld Half Moon Bay club, Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society. I try to visit every time I'm in Silicon Valley/Sand Hill, and of course, I went regularly when I lived in the Bay Area.

Those Wild Beboppers...
BeBop replied to sgcim's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
The correction at the end seems to need a minor connerection if its own: Editor's note: An earlier version of this story posted online contained a few errors. Sixty years have passed since Parker's death, not 50, and the piano carried up the hill was not a baby grand. Also, we misquoted Clora Bryant. The story has been changed to reflect her actual quote. We regret the errors. -
Once in a lifetime employment opportunity

Sounds like a typical TaskRabbit assignment. -

Jazz nicknames - rationales?
BeBop replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Yes, Gene was called 'Jug' because he could drink anyone under the table Rather sad that people cling to this "easy" notion. Jazz goes hand in hand with drug abuse and drinking copiously. Perhaps it's true, but the story I've consistently heard from people without an agenda to propagate stereotypes was that he got the name from Billy Eckstine when Mr. B was buying straw hats for the band, and even the biggest wouldn't fit "Jughead". (This story doesn't appear in the Eckstine bio, "Mr. B", but it's reported in Jet Magazine, back in 1969) Perhaps it's a "cover story" for prodigious drinking. I rather hope not. -
Enjoyed the feature on the local scene in today's Star, though it left me a little bummed that I haven't had and am not likely to have any daylight in my schedule. I've been thinking about trying to catch Everette De Van (also in today's Star), since he's playing all over this week. Ain't going to happen.

Mel Lewis bio

It's got to be better than the Jake Hanna bio. -
St Louis, I just got to stay closer to the city, so more food choice. As for Kansas City, the airport isn't even in the same State...as most of the city ;-) Aieee! Now I'm distracted. Need to regain work focus or I'll be here until Christmas.

Actually, I'm out in the hinterlands - out by the airport/KCI Expo Center where it's cheap! My choices are Wendy's, Cracker Barrel and Waffle House. I think I saw a Chuck E Cheese. My trip to Power and Light (almost $60 by cab, each way, ouch) was to get to Cosentino's to set in provisions to get me through the week. Life was a bit better in St. Louis and I'm hoping for better in Boston and Philadephia. But I've got take what comes.

Thanks for the very kind offer of hospitaility. I'm in town until Sunday, but I'm doing my usual 18-hour workdays, so my arrival yesterday is likely to be my only "at leisure" time. That World Cup crowd was pretty amazing. I'm not a sports guy, but it seemed like the whole town/everyone in the family was there...with wacky glasses and face paint. Not something I see often on the blase' coasts.

Warm, crazy night in the KC MO Power and Light district with Hillary Clinton on book tour and a bunch of soccer (football)-mad folks. Free weeklies list a least a couple of new vinyl retail venues and some interesting nearby clubs. Alas, workin'. No time. But good to see the Jazz Museum up and running. My first visit here, it was no more than a vision. Local visitors guide lists notable city achievements: "invented jazz jam session".

For the past couple of days, this website's been unavailable. Kind of looks like the most commercial of the jazz forums didn't pay some bills(?)

Just one guy's opinion based on one incident: I had an over-the-top good customer service experience with importcds. I'd go back.

Probably issued more times than any other recording of Wardell. Without actively seeking this material (beyond first version obtained). I must have 40 recordings - 78, 10 inch, cassette, LP, CD, boxes, multi-LP sets...

Fathers' Day Promo (2015) at Mosaic - Free/Discounted Shipping
BeBop replied to BeBop's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Duke Ellington 1932-1940 = $159 x 10% = $15.90 = A full day's food for me. Yeah, anyone who can spend $160 on a bunch of CDs can feed himself. But if I can save $16 on something I was going to buy anyway, we're just talking about free money for an adjustment in timing. And if you don't think timing is important, wait a while until that set is on eBay for $300. I'm not really arguing your valid point about meagre discounts here. But I don't see it as a buy/don't buy question. Just timing.
