  1. Yes, I hope my experience was the exception. Actually, I did it because my parents had successfully rented out condos in the same complex. Despite using a very reputable property manager (who happens to have a monopoly at this location), I had a string of people who came in, paid first/last, never paid again, had to be forcibly evicted and trashed the place. (Bay Areans could confirm, by way of background, that the Watergate complex in Emeryville isn't the Ritz, but it's also not the ghetto.) At one point, I even had a corporate(!) "tenant", who housed high-level employees visiting the area, presumably for long periods of time. They didn't thrash the place, but it turns out they didn't have any money to pay, and the guy living there didn't know/believe that the rent wasn't being paid, so....call the sheriff to bounce him out. Hope he's not still living in his Bimmer. Another tenant was the sister of a co-worker. How she got lipstick on the ceiling... She didn't ever pay and STILL had the gall to sue me!
  2. Noooooo! Arrrghhhh! The memories. I'll spare you the details (here, anyway; PM me if you want them), but when I decided to go homeless, I rented out my small condo for a while. My losses over two years were three times the market value of the condo (evictions, damage repair, court costs, property management, legal expenses (not attorneys), sale commission...)
  3. Welcome from Auckland's near-homonym, Oakland (California)
  4. Pretty cool. I'm in Philadeplia (actually Chester) for PhillyQs birthday. Have a great one.

  6. The wise thing about the dedicated approach is being able to install the correct stylus for 78 play; do swapping in and out, or living with something meant for LPs.
  7. One of the companies I'm working with looks like it WON'T be going out of business and a few hundred people who work there WON'T be out of work. (I claim no credit for this, but can't help but smile.)
  8. My wife's doctor (of all people) got it. This guy would probably have been making light of all the hoopla, and probably was even after being diagnosed. Anyway, he was quite low key about it, and only 'fessed up after having to cancel all of his appointments.
  9. ...or use the unavailable items to "pad" an order up to the free shipping level.
  10. I really like the Weston. Nice Weston era, and great sidemen! (Hawk, Little Giant, Roy Haynes, Kenny Dorham, Cecil Payne...)
  11. Hey, I'm in Chicago. Don't get better than that. (Well, if my workdays were a bit shorter...)

  13. Don't want to forget all those reasons to smile, music among them. Today, Fathers' Day, I'm in a hardscrabble neighborhood of Chicago. Walking into a shop behind (apparently) a mother and daughter. The kid's about five. Two doors, one after the other, to get into the shop. Mom's leading; daughter's holding her hand, but a step behind. Mom and daughter heading through the doors. I'm a five steps behind them. Daughter spots me and, still holding Mom's hand, slows her down to hold the door for me. She's smiling. I thank her. Mom and daughter shopping. A little accident occurs. I fear there's going to be a little butt whipping. But no, a hug. Mom and daughter finish shopping and head for the door, hands full. I open and hold the door for them. Daughter thanks me. No, not a dazzling story. But I'm old and jaded and figure kids aren't being brought up with manners any more. Especially when (it appears) that life is rough, economically and otherwise. I was only too happy to be wrong here. So what's making you smile today?
  14. I've had it as my default search engine for about six weeks. I rather like it. (I've an aversion to Google that probably isn't strictly rational. I used to use Blackle as my default.) Anyway, I like several of the features, like the rollover/view thing that prevents me from egtting hijacked to spam 'n slam sites. There are still some bugs, especially in the Shopping and Travel areas, but overall, it's looking like an extended test drive.
  15. Don't forget to include Pres himself singing (with Oscar Peterson). Oh wait, you have to worry about FCC and all that indecency stuff.

  17. PLEASE TAKE ALL OF THIS AS LIGHT-HEARTED. That's how it's intended, though the language doesn't always convey. I won't debate Facts, but I'll add a bit of clarification on my perspective. True, KUVO, KKJZ, WBGO and others do have some non-jazz programming. KCSM has a blues program. Sure, its a close kin... I can't say KKJZ's non-jazz material bothers me much, though KUVO's constant station promos...ouch. KEWU isn't 24 hours, nor is KNTU, WDNA, KPLU, KBCS, WIFU, but I'm glad to have them too. The "Aside from Parlocha's show" implies that this is the only syndicated/purchased programming. But, when last I checked, KCSM was also airing Jazz From Lincoln Center, Jazz Set, Piano Jazz, Jazz Profiles, and Big Band Jump. (What's up with the MC's voice on this last program?) My comments about your presentation and selection of music, Ms. Clancy, were NOT intended to be personal, except, I suppose, personal to me and my tastes. Frankly, I don't find vocals - jazz or otherwise - appealing. That doesn't mean that they should "go away", but sometimes I need to. Ms. Clancy has been on the air for a good, long while (especially for a 29-year old - take that as a comment about her enthusiasm). And, if I recall correctly (questionable), she was a College of San Mateo instructor for one of my old jazz history classes. I wish her and KCSM well. And I say sincerely: check her out.

  19. I REALLY like Wardell, but the whole package didn't work for me. There's always this "disconnect" between the boppers and the rest of the band. Listen, for example, to the Hucklebuck. Lame, lame, lame, then here's come's Wardell, blowing some nice lines, then we're back to lame. The best stuff, in my opinion, was the small group broadcast material with and without Stan Hasselgard and By the way, check out this thread and broadcast: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=52954 Other material that's kind of similar, but, in my opinion, better are the bands of Earl Hines and Billy Eckstine from the earlier 40's. There's also nice material for Wardell with Basie circa 1950-51.
  20. Actually, I'm surprised how many 24/7 or nearly 24/7 jazz stations I come across. That said, many don't even meet the KCSM standard.
  21. Perhaps it's karma, after I said a few not-too-nice things about KCSM that I should end up yesterday morn in the Bay Area. So I decided to give them another listen. I'll say "it's just me", but twenty minutes into Alisa Clancy's program, I was about ready to commit suicide. A whole string of novelty vocals - some by legit singers, I suppose, but... And the too-cute chuckle-filled interludes... The Bob Parlocha broadcast is what it is. I'd credit KCSM with not putting in a bunch of station program advertising filler, e.g., KUVO Denver, and cutting off the credits. In fact, I really appreciate the fact that KCSM gives more than the leader name and CD title. Yeah, I care who the bassist was. Keith Hines was okay. I know they're trying to raise money, so I forgive the constant pleas. He played some fine stuff. Melanie Berzon, well, if I don't like Alisa Clancy... Kathleen Lawton's blues program was listenable too; too 'safe' and too many vocals for me (but that's characteristic of the blues, eh?) Sonny Buxton comes on in a few minutes, but I've got a plane to catch. Bottom line: every six months or so, I pick a public radio station and make a pledge. (I don't have a home, so I'm not a regular anywhere.) I may not love it, but I think I'll kick in on the save-KCSM thing. I was glad to have something to listen too...and gripe about.
  22. I'm sure you're already hip to this, but for anyone exploring the sale, realize that the offerings are pretty limited. (Not to say there isn't some fine stuff out there...) So, if you search for, say Hampton Hawes and don't see any discounted titles, don't be surprised. Try someone else.
