  1. I was in PS a week ago. The thought of going to FYE never crossed my mind. FYE also publishes continuous coupons for big discounts on one item in the local freebie papers: Inland Empire Weekly, LA Weekly - and the LA Times, I believe.
  2. "78 titles added 4/11/09" 78s? Where's them 78s?
  3. Thanks. I feel a little better about my fading memory (re: Kamuca)
  4. Accujazz, Look at your previous postings and you'll find that I'm something of an advocate for your service. But do you really need a new thread here for every new channel? Could we confine things to one, AccuJazz update thread? Sorry, it's not really my business; I'm not a moderator here. But, at some point, since all you're posting is AccuJazz updates, it starts to smell like spam.
  5. By the way, the website (http://www.nyjazzmuseum.com/) is non-functional.
  6. I just received - four years later - the same e-mail posted here. Anyone read "Jazz Expose"?
  7. Has everyone read the interview with Fred Jung? http://www.jazzweekly.com/interviews/cnessa.htm
  8. Further thought: at least one of my LPs must be different (if I recall correctly) because it has Richie Kamuca. Wish I had them things with me.
  9. I don't have my LPs in front of me, but this looks a lot like one of two I have. One was on Montage, but there was also a bootleg of some sort, with a mimeographed cover. The sound on the latter was pretty hollow, but still a fun listen.
  10. Today, I can only wonder why it took me so long to appreciate Fats and Bud. Bird came quickly. Diz, well, I'm still not sure I'm ready to place him alongside Bird, Bud and Fats. Nice cat, though. And an inspiration.
  11. The first "cool" record I ever bought - something not on one of the BIG labels - was on Nessa. I used to leave it on my turntable so that my friends could see it and would have to take it off to put on something else. "Hey, keep your grimy, bass-player hands off the grooves of that Lucky Thompson on Nessa".
  12. I do expect that this will be an accomplished bit of scholarship. I learned about the book (actually some time ago, but help off on making even this informal announcement until things were fairly solid) from my friend and keeper of the definitive Navarro website, Stuart Varden (http://csis.pace.edu/~varden/navarro/navarro.html) I'm not certain what Stuart's contribution to the book was; I haven't yet asked. But it seems clear to me that he has been involved. Check out the publisher's other jazz-related books.
  13. The thing I love about you, Allen, is that I never know whether you're calling me a moron or not. But no worry: I don't much care. (The preceding message is written 100% light-heartedly. I respect Mr. Lowe's opinions; terms like "bone-frying" reveal my poor command of the English language...or whichever language it is he speaks. As an aside, I was a small contributor to the addition of a new marker for Navarro's grave. I don't think that his bones were fried/creamated.)
  14. As you can imagine, this is exciting news for a guy who calls himself "BeBop". But it should be exciting news for you too. --------------- http://www.scarecrowpress.com/Catalog/Sing...data=0810867214 The Music and Life of Theodore "Fats" Navarro Infatuation Series: Studies in Jazz #59 Leif Bo Petersen & Theo Rehak List Price: $55.00 ISBN: 0-8108-6721-4 ISBN-13: 978-0-8108-6721-5 Pub Date: Jul 28, 2009 384 pages Binding: Cloth Availability: Not Yet Published DESCRIPTION The Music and Life of Theodore "Fats" Navarro: Infatuation is the first comprehensive study of the jazz trumpeter Theodore "Fats" Navarro. It provides biographical and discographical information on this talented musician, whose premature death from tuberculosis at 26 robbed the jazz world of his brilliance. Through an analysis of his recorded legacy, this book offers new perspectives on Navarro's role in the history and emergence of Bebop. Through years of study and collecting ephemera, some of which is reprinted here, Leif Bo Petersen and Theo Rehak depict an inclusive history of Navarro and his music. Their information is based on interviews with musicians and people in the music business, contemporary newspaper and magazine articles, and the music itself, which has not been commonly known or described until now. The book features images, musical examples, and depictions of Navarro's recordings, and it provides several appendixes, including explanations of contemporary recording techniques and discographical terms, lists of Navarro's recordings and compositions, and a chronological overview of Navarro's performances, recording sessions, and engagements. Complete with a comprehensive list of sources and a full index, this volume presents a host of new and useful information for anyone interested in jazz and its history. ABOUT THE AUTHORS Leif Bo Petersen is a trumpeter and jazz researcher, who has studied Fats Navarro for over 10 years. Theo Rehak has collected and maintained a collection of images and ephemera called L'Archive Navarro since 1966.

  16. I've got the Blakeslee...and all the others listed. I didn't pick it up for rarity. Just figured I could find a little musical pleasure and enlightenment on the cheap. My posting was really about NineWinds. I was curious about the status of the label. Obviously there was a bunch of brand-new stock being sold dirt cheap.
  17. I strolled into a record shop not far from where I'm working to pick up the local weekly independent newspaper to check out show listings. (Seems like a rare thing these days to have the time.) I had NO INTENTION of buying anything. But, well, you know... The $0.49/$0.99 bin was FULL - and I mean FULL - of 9Winds/NineWinds* stuff. Since I'm here two weeks, I can manage the physical discs. Before I leave, I hope to have found a library or some person with whom I can leave these things. I probably only picked up a third of the catalog on-offer (and less than a tenth of the total discs in the bin.) But it did leave me wondering about the status of 9Winds/NineWinds. 18. Always. Only thing better (...along these lines) is an OLD Kraftwerk disc.
  19. Even with that 120gb iPod, you can't carry your whole collection with you. And heck, even when you've got the whole thing at hand, you may be wishing for something you don't have (yet!). Right now, I'm in want of some Archie Shepp/Richard Davis or NHOP duo stuff and some 8-Bit Operators.
  20. BeBop

    Bud Shank R.I.P.

I saw Shank a few times - a couple at the old Lighthouse, including once with the LA4 - and once at Port Townsend. Always a pleasant listen. Thanks.
  21. Best City in the US, in my opinion. An earlier thread: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...&hl=Chicago
  22. No, in response to the original question, I don't remember, but I'm happy to be delighted now. If nothing else, it gives me some context. Two cities where I spend a lot of time have "Randy's Record Shops". I'd thought it was just coincidence.
