What does this mean? "We're barely hanging on"? "We're cautiously optimistic"? "We need your support"? I don't like the sound of it.

Another Farrell I ESPECIALLY recommend is Darn That Dream (Drive) with Art Pepper at his prime (IMO) and George Cables. Samples here: http://www.amazon.com/Darn-That-Dream-Joe-...l/dp/B000005OBS

There's a hotel on my regular rotation these days that plays a mix of stuff - most of it okay-or-better - but the mix includes some great bop and hard bop (Hank with Lee, Horace, Dex, Pepper, Rollins, Hamp Hawes) and a bit of lighter fare (Getz, Lighthouse groups, Chet-lite). It's one of few public places with piped in music where I turn OFF my MP3 player. And, amazingly, this hotel is in a cultural WASTELAND. (Sorry if you happen to live there and love this nameless place.) It's situated at a mega mall and more than half the clientele stay at the hotel for multi-day shopping expeditions. Once in a while, someone sees me listening to the music. "Uh, you like jazz - it's jazz, right?"

Have a GREAT one!

Now playing on the Groove Jazz channel: Organissimo!

Middle of the night rumination: Let's say Person X is a genius. Since (s)he's a jazz genius, we'll refer to Person X as "Sonny" X. Me? I'm no genius. So: 1. Am I in a position to judge Sonny X's genius? 2. Regardless to the answer to Q1, will I recognize Sonny X's genius? 3. Despite the genius, might I (and others l like me) hate Sonny X's music? Going a step beyond...what does this have to do with the general public's failure to embrace jazz, even as practiced by a generally recognized genius. So what does being a genius get you? Back to bed now, Bebop.

...and yet, in a few (very few) places, like Oakland and Salt Lake City, I can think of a close to a half dozen new shops. Not that some old one's didn't close too.

Collective geniuses. Yes. (Actually, I'd posted, then deleted, something about this.) Nominees: Basie Rhythm section and Miles' Quintets/Sextets

Sorry, I know I sounded kinda preachy. I suppose that the low volume of buying a do leaves me pretty price-insensitive...though I miraculously held off buying that Live in New York disc. Regretting it now? Yeah, prob'ly.

...and it looks like Amazon wants $17 (free shipping at $25) plus tax for the one CD they have. I did a quick, on-line price search. Best I found was Dusty Groove at $13.99. (Don't know shipping cost.)
-
Well, they're $14 a disc, plus, plus. I guess I'm accustomed to paying $17 for a hot-off-the-presses offering, even though I know the price will drop if I wait. I really don't know how widely available these will be. And, if there's one thing I've grown to appreciate, it's that, if I want something, whether for myself or as a gift, and I see it, buy it, lest it become the next Basra or (what was the Mosaic box that got discontinued after a short life?)

Idiots, count off. "One"

I know I've got some Schildkraut on LP (Honeydew label?) and I've got probably all of the w/Miles' stuff, also on LP. Now I want to hear it...but my LPs are about a million miles away. So, next time I'm reunited with those LPs (June?), I'll have to digitize them and load them onto my MP3 player; I'll only have about a day for this, before I'm back on the road. The question: are the Miles' and the Honeydews good samples of his work, or should I be looking elsewhere? (I'm frankly not sure what else I might have; these are what I remember.)

Now available at Cadence or through Downtown Music Gallery.

Several of the Inner Citys (including at least two Ernie Krivdas) are now available through Cadence.

New poll idea: "How Many Geniuses at the Organissimo Forums?" Heck, "How Many Geniuses in Organissimo?" You're right. I didn't define "genius". My purpose was to let everyone provide his/her own definition - either indirectly, by choosing something from the poll, or directly, by posting a definition. I suggested that I though many folks (e.g., reviewers, obituary writers) were using a broader definition than I do. That's fine. If I know that someone sees "genius" everywhere (or thinks every record deserves four-and-a-half stars), I can deal with it. The key is knowing. But I'm NOT evaluating anyone. Ain't no right or wrong.
-
The term "genius" gets used quite a bit. Too casually, in my opinion, but that's just me. So this poll is more about the term "genius" than it is about jazz. But jazz gives a frame of reference. Do you think that jazz attracts more than its share of geniuses, as opposed to, say country, opera or architecture? If so, why?
-
...plus $2.98 shipping. I'm figuring that Jazz Loft will be a bit cheaper when these get reissued.
-
Nothing wrong with the old CDs...or the LPs for that matter. But since this has been OOP, it seems like the prices aren't so much "prices" as "ransom". The two sellers through Amazon want $60 and $225 for part 2.

There are two I'd take to the desert island (pick any of the Manne volumes).

Don't hold your breath. Some will come out sooner than others. The Long March has been announced as far back as 2004 (with a different catalogue number). .......and Willisau 1991, dagnabit!!! The waiting has been a Long March itself. Not many things on my 'want list', but this is one!

Well, I just picked up #52, Winter 2009. Got seven pages in, then had to put it back down. I'm told that there's a Bob Koester article in there. Hopefully I'll make it that far.
