I have to agree he's the worst I've seen in such a position. He doesn't seem to know much about the music and doesn't write very well. Quite a double whammy for someone who writes for "the paper of record". I like what Doug Ramsey said on his site about it.

Jazz Standard is fine, just slow with their listings I guess. Up/Over is gone I'm sorry to say, I thought it was a nice place and saw some great music there but there was rarely a crowd.

Purchasing a bootleg recording, a tacit approval of such practices (which is OK in the privacy of your own home at best) and telling others about it in print so they will seek it out is not to cool to me. No matter how you put it, artists suffer from these practices and a jazz journalist has no right to encourage this stuff in print.

A guy like Davis is probably a bit isolated from most fans (why else would he seem so generally clueless to the scene in general) and musicians so I guess he didn't know about this and since he's so well paid (according to clem at least) and didn't know he had options, it probably seemed like very little to pay for an important slice of jazz history. That he wrote about it in the Voice and in an article solely devoted to it seems a bit idiotic though on many levels.

I think Rosewood is a great record, you should check it out.

Circe is Atlantis and Skagly and Mutant on the Beach were both recorded later by the composers on their own albums. Of all the VSOP albums I like this one the least, the live stuff is much better.

Look, the guy just mentioned that $20 seemed a little high for a CD and on that I agreed. We are not takng into account original costs or anything like that just how much does it cost to re-issue the CD and do a minimal run (1,000 copies). If he is burning copies on demand than $20 is still high. OK, now to address Mr. Nessa. Artwork cost-none, artwork already exists Film/transfer cost- minimal, do a high resolution scan of the cover if you don't have the original films, I've been told it's better to scan at this point anyway. Total cost $500-1000 to get the whole CD booklet designed including scanning, proofs, transfers etc, etc. proof cost-see above printing cost (how many do you print at what unit cost?)- included with the CD run probably a little over $1 a CD if you run 1,000 ship printing to pressing plant cost- minimal like $10 remixing/editing cost- probably no re-mixing done remix/editing proof- what a CDR please beside no re-mixing probably anyway mastering cost- these days it can be $300 to $3,000 but lets say he cares a little bit $1,000 mastering proof- included in cost above again a CDR shipping master to pp cost- shipping master, a CD wow maybe another $10 pressing cost- as above jewel box/assembly/wrap cost- as above shipping to your warehouse cost- OK shipping 1,000 CD surface insured, not that much, less than $100 publishing royalty cost- depends on the deal artist royalty cost- depends on the deal but only after expenses are recouped. 1,000 copies at $20 a pop if somehow he sells out $20,000. Expenses $5,000 maybe. I think he's going to be OK. I know it's not a easy business Mr. Nessa and mostly a labour of love but sometimes, please, give me a break.

Please 'splain this to me. Do you know the costs? Can you write a budget that makes the discs cheaper? I want to know. $20 a copy to re-issue a CD of material you own? What costs are you talking about re-mastering? New artwork? Pressing 1,000 copies. So $3,000-$4,000. Please, give me a break.

Atlantis is brilliant, among the best he's ever done. Joy Ryder is quite nice as well, he's been revisting some of these tunes live lately. Phantom Navigater is OK, some nice stuff but it's a bit overwhelmed by some dated sounding synth stuff.

OK, there are a lot of questions here. First I don't believe going on the DL will stop you from being tested, there is so much bullshit and guesswork floating around about this scandal. Second, if Bonds juiced he hasn't done it in a year or two probably since the testing regiments got tougher. So if one is on steroids and then goes off does he become Giambi, become noticably smaller and hit .212 or become Bonds, hit even better and win another MVP. I know most here think Bonds is an ass but it's hard to figure out any consistent formula for those on steroids. When you stop, do you lose what you gained or do you keep the same muscle mass? There seems like there is a huge possibility that if Bonds juiced, he hasn't for at least two years now and it hasn't stopped his production one bit. Yesterday's diatribe was just venting and frustration, he'll be back the minute he is ready. As for the rest, we'll see how it all pans out. An angry ex-girlfried is going to bring him down, dubious at best. As for the homeruns, smaller ballparks. livelier balls and expansion seem to have more to do with the greater production then steroids. You still have to make contact you know.....

I always leave positive feedback when I ship the item out so the buyer knows it's been shipped. This does leave me exposed to the random disgruntled asshole but as a buyer I feel more comfortable when this is done so I do it and take my chances. The sellers who don't do this are always the ones who sell questionable product and the negatives I've received were always tit-for-tat negatives from rip-off sellers.

Well Duh!! As much as I believe Phil Jackson is a great coach, he is not the only good to great coach in the league..... why is that so hard to figure out.... Also, there are some bad coaches in the league... B-) Detroit Rocks!![/ Phil Jackson is a great coach but he was thoroughly out-coached by Larry Brown in the Finals last year. Also it showed how a team concept can beat a couple of superstars so what do the Lakers do, go further in the wrong direction. If the Pistons are healthy I think they beat the Heat but it will be quite a series and if Dwayne Wade really steps up (and I think he can) maybe the Heat could pull it out. I have to disagree with you on Phil Jackson being out-coached. ALL the evidence is in now and it is pretty obvious Phil was over ridden in some of his decisons he was going to make. The most obvious being that Kobe is the "Untouchable" and Kobe's attitude thoroughly destroyed the Lakers team as a team. None of the players cared by the time they reached the Finals. No coach would have been able to put them together again at that time. Humpty Dumpty had fallen and was broken ..... etc. No King, no horses.... could....... you know the rest. As much as I like Larry Brown, I think in his mind he has already quit on the Pistons to repeat. Larry loves to teach and there is nothing left to teach the Pistons. After all, Larry has not experienced the task of repeating an NBA championship so how can he "teach" it. Too bad, he is good though. BUT the Pistons have learned and learned well. Now I'm just playing devil's advocate here but the Grateful Dead are millionaires probably and have a huge fan base and can survive this. How about if a jazz label gets a chance to officially release a great live concert but back off because it's been circulated so often and the fan base isn't that huge to begin with. True many of you guys would buy it anyway but say that only half of you. That's enough of a death sentence for this sort of thing.

The real fact is that this stuff shouldn't be circulating at all and if you buy it, trade it, sell it or whatever in reality you are all wrong to do so. I don't know about these trees or whatever, I just bought them from the guy on ebay because it was fast and $10. I'm wrong, he's wrong, we are all wrong technically. So make a decision to enjoy these recordings or not but unless the artist has authorized the release we are all dealing with music we shouldn't be. I never had a problem with you about buying from this guy. My problem was with him for selling things that are being shared for free. I know we have no right to some of this music, but I don't see anything wrong with sharing it, as long as it is not for profit and as long as it doesn't take away sales for a legitimate product. I'm grateful to musicians that allow sharing of their music and I want to respect their wishes in that we only share it, not profit from it. It's a two way street; sharing this music does keep it alive. A lot of it might be lost if it wasn't for fans who traded live recordings. For example, a few years back the rock band Quicksilver Messenger Service released an album of a live concert from 1968. I believe they got the tapes for that concert from underground traders. I read an interview with their guitarist about how when he asked for cds of shows, they were sent to him. I collect this stuff because I love the music. I've never profitted or would ever profit from it. Another example, I have hundreds of Grateful Dead shows, yet I've also purchased 95% of the Dick's Picks series so far and plan to buy the rest in the future. I have purchased all their other archive releases also. I think file sharing of unreleased material is the greatest thing. It gets the music out there and also takes the profit away from most of the bootleggers. It takes away the reason for bootleg labels in the first place; they know their bootleg will be shared by file sharers. All the have to do is sell one copy for the bootleg to become a shared item. This takes all the demand away for their products. Yes, you are right of course, didn't Led Zepplin get a lot of their tapes from fans for that box set that came out a few years ago. Ten bucks is not a huge profit and I don't these people really get rich from this, they are probably just feeding their own habit (my CDs even came with a note thanking me for being a jazz fan). Sure there are some blatant boot-leggers out there but I guess my point is I don't see much difference between trading the stuff and paying $10 for it if I get what I want and I'm too lazy to mess with trees and going to a site 10 times to see if I can get a space. The digital age has made a lot of stuff easily availible (is there a DVD tree yet? a lot of great stuff has resurfaced with the advent of DVDs) and it's been a boon for fans like us but let's not forget it's a questionable thing we are doing and not turn our noses up at someone who makes $10 doing it as if we are so high and mighty compared to them.

Just a rumor at this point but I've heard Andrew is making a record for Blue Note again and playing at Birdland in April or May in preparation for it. I've also heard that it's his regular quartet with special guest Charles Tolliver
