I'll have to check out Steamboat Switzerland. It sounds like they might be right up my alley. King Ubu - let us know how those solo piano discs are once you get a chance to listen to them
  2. I'll toss out a recommendation for a current player who has that effect on me: Ray Anderson. His Pocket Brass Band was a joy to see live.

Die Like a Dog refers to the manner in which Albert Ayler died. From an interview w/ Brotzmann that I found online: "Just to start off easy, what was the origin of the Die Like a Dog quartet name? I was writing a little article about Albert Ayler for a Swiss newspaper, and that was the same time I was hanging around Toshinori Kondo and we were thinking and talking about Ayler. You know, I know Kondo for 20 years at least, and at that point we wanted to set up a new group, another group, cause at that time I was working on one side with William Parker, for long years, and the other one was Hamid Drake, with whom I was playing a lot of duo concerts. So, we just decided to make a new band, and this article ended with the sentence, "He died like a dog." It was in my first opinion it was not meant as a title for the band, it was just because I was using the article for the booklet of the first CD of that quartet. But we realized that people liked the name, so we stayed with it. That was all. " It's funny, my wife calls this sort of music "ghost music." Sounds like she has very similar tastes with you wife!
  4. I am really hoping you included a track from this: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&u...l=A0r4zefqk7gf4 just to read your response to people's guesses.
  5. Constantly. Variety really is the spice of life, musically. I also find that I appreciate jazz more when I revisit my old favorites with a fresh set of ears.
  6. or that we are able to take such amazingly detailed photos like these. Thanks for sharing this link!

I've been really getting more and more interested in Erstwhile this year. I've picked up quite a few of their releases and have enjoyed all of the, to varying degrees. I have not, however, heard any of the three you mentioned. I'll pick up Particles and Smears when it is reprinted next year. Which For4Ears discs are you thinking about picking up?

That is Gunter Muller's label. I really want to hear his solo disc and the solo Le Quanh Ninh discs. You can get there really inexpensively through Erstwhile records. click on "Other Cds" and they all seem to be $11 plus shipping.
  9. a few more I thought of: Supersilent 6 The Vandermark 5 - Airports For Light Martin Siewert/Martin Brandlmayr - Too Beatiful To Burn Ellery Eskelin – Arcanum moderne and for reissues: Reverend Charlie Jackson - God's Got It

...and a good cover!! I actually don't have it - I will, of course get it sooner or later. The next Brötzmann I plan to buy is THIS ONE. It's on excellent Italian Splasc(H) lable. I really dig Ultima and Remember to Forget, the two discs he recorded with William Parker and Hamid Drake.

The Music Resource, based on my previous experience, is very slow, but delivers.

The "needing" to pick it up would be a difficult call. I don't own a ton of Brotzmann so I'm glad to have Funny Rat. I'll let you know what I think of Dare Devil after it arrives and I have a few listens. (It's a slightly pricey import so if you can get it cheap now, you may want to jump.) It is also pretty pricey at the local brick and mortar ($20ish) but they had it on sale for 40% off last time I looked. If you don't already have it grab the new Brotz on Eremeite - Never Too Late But Always too Early w/ William Parker and Hamid Drake. That set smokes from start to finish.
  13. I've recently heard a few more 2003 discs which will definitely make my "best of year" list: Rabih Abou-Khalil - Morton's Foot. Another outstanding disc. I need to get all of his discs that I am missing. Amplify 2002 Box Set - definitely not for everyone but, for those with a more adventurous disposition, essential listening. Fennesz - Live in Japan

This disc has been on my radar screen since it came out but I have been undecided on needing to pick it up. How is Daredevil? I have heard very mixed reviews of that one, but know where I can probably still pick up a reasonably priced copy locally. (strangely enough, in this area...)

    Anthony Braxton

I'll second the recommendation for the Quintet (Basel) 1977 disc on Hat. Last time I checked JazzLoft had it on clearance for around $10.
  16. @#%&!!! I saw your post after 12...Damn! thanks for the heads-up.
  17. tough call but I had to go with Booker over RRK.
  18. a label that hasn't been mentioned yet is Eremite. They are releasing some consistently amazing discs. I would also list Okkadisc, Atavistic and the Atavistic Unheard Music Series in addition to what has already been mentioned.
  19. Joe McPhee - Tenor and Fallen Angel Complete Stax / Volt Singles disc 8 Myra Melford / Han Bennink - Eleven Ghosts Anouar Brahem - Astrakan Cafe Thomas Mapfumo - Live at El Rey
  20. I've been curious about Sunna Gunnlaugs for a while now based on a few things I've read about her music online. AMG describes her as crossing piano jazz with Icelandic folk with some "bizarre sounds" and experimental music thrown in. I'm really not to sure what to make of all that so I was wondering if anyone here had heard any of her albums and could comment on her music.
  21. I have an extra copy of Kenny Drew's Undercurrent BN Collector's Choice CD. If anyone is interested in buying it or trading for it send me a PM. I would sell for $6 or trade for anything reasonable that I don't have.

  24. I think it is going to be interesting to hear reactions from people who really dislike some of the tracks. (JSngry's promise to "offend" comes to mind.) It would be boring if we all sort of dug all of the tracks on each BF test.
