I heard that in order to raise the money to start the Pablo label he sold some of his Picassos, hence the name. This may be apocryphal for all I know. But later on, Verve also had the Velvet Underground and Frank Zappa---talk about a label that kicked ass!

What a pity Mosaic didn't issue this fabulous collection on CD... Yeah, and the least they could have done is keep one of each of the LP sets for me, for the time I found out about Mosaic... or even better, a couple of more years, until I'd have had the knowledge and some money. The least they could have done is saved me a copy of each volume of the Commodore super-set, and sent 'em to me for Christmas.

Old one had a Blue Note vibe to its design. The new one is just fugly. Yeah! That's it---that Blue Note vibe! Gotta love it. I take it "fugly" is short for "fuckin' ugly"? I'd have called it bland and standardized, but fugly, well...yes.

Some nice choices! What do you think of Conflict? Bruce, "Conflict" is a very solid and exciting effort at least for me. Jimmy's playing at times is quite adventurous without completely going across the edge. The cast is quite impressive with Carmell Jones, Harold Land, Andrew Hill, George Tucker and Elvin Jones. Elvin at times just beats the hell out of his drum kit. As of right now, this release is probably my favorite among all the releases listed above. Glad to hear it. Conflict was and is a standout album for me, certainly. And I like playing that's adventurous, even skirts the edge, but doesn't go right off it.

But it should be a criminal offense to put mayonnaise on hamburgers.

A friend of mine got the Galaxy Art Pepper box some years ago. Says it's good. I've always wondered---is that a spiral, barred, irregular, or elliptical galaxy.
