  1. You probably have discussed this somewhere else, but can you be more specific? What jazz does he have a poor appreciation for? MG: which original Mosaic promise are you referring to? I wasn't referring to a specific promise. It was more like such a thing shows promise, y'know? I thought it did. And I have bought several boxes and selects. But so many things that I would have liked to have seen out as complete sets have been passed by that, overall, I'm disappointed with Mosaic's 25 year career so far. I expect someone will ask what I would have liked to have come out, so I'll just mention Billy Larkin & the Delegates Aura/WP, Les McCann PJs, Reuben Wilson BNs, Groove Holmes PJs, JAM, a proper Patton set, a complete Blue Mitchell BNs etc etc. ... Didn't they actually come out with that last one? Mosaic MD4-178? "The Complete Blue Note Blue Mitchell Sessions." Is the title of this set in error? Michael Cuscuna's taste seems to match up with mine pretty well, so I've got no serious complaints. I think Mosaic is a good company that's filled a niche very well, provides prompt quality service, and puts out a good product. (Sometimes I get mad at myself for buying too many of their boxes, but that's my problem, not theirs.)
  2. Well, I blame that on my girlfriend at the time. In retrospect, I'd say that she exuded some sort of force-field that could ruin any movie. Heavens! Good thing you weren't seeing The Third Man with her.
  3. Eeeee-oooow!!!!
  4. But don't forget, you found Out of the Past underwhelming initially, didn't you?
  5. I always liked Marcia. This just makes me like her more...
  6. Jazz At Oberlin and Jazz Impressions of Eurasia
  7. Uh...yeah. Substitute "Krugman" for "Dowd", and I agree with you! Hear hear!! (Or is it "Here here"?) In any case,---vehement agreement!
  8. Yeah! Of course, I'm always short on money... My thoughts exactly. If they had a 90%-off sale that would help me, but then everything would probably get sold out in one day.
  9. Sounds good to me, but what do I know?
  10. Eddie Costa! As usual, you hit the nail on the head. A while back I got a Japanese CD version of a 1956 Sal Salvador Quartet session on Bethlehem called Frivolous Sal. The personnel is almost identical to the bands on the Connoisseur: Salvador, Costa, George Roumanis on bass, and Jimmy Campbell on drums. Nice stuff! He's anything but frivolous. The combination of Salvador and Costa is magic.
  11. More like "fifties" at this point.
  12. Freakin' hilarious. Well, let's be fair, there's also "Pretty Vacant," "No Feelings," "Bodies," "Sub-Mission," "Liar," "New York," "Satellite," "EMI," the always lovable old favorite "Holidays In the Sun," and they could do their cover of the Stooges' "No Fun" which is a big, big improvement on the original. That's a good 30, 40 minutes or so, depending on how long they drag out "No Fun."
  13. Original US release was on Columbia. It was a French film, wasn't it? Oui.
  14. What the f----oh. THAT Robert Jordan. (Whew.) Never mind. RIP
  15. Yep. I did. I'll say one thing---buying them all one by one made me stop regretting my failure to purchase the Andrew Hill Mosaic. I like having the original album covers and liner notes.
  16. Now I know what all those bad rumours about Leonard Feather are based on. Yikes!
  17. I like Mingus and Dolphy.
  18. A gallon of gas: 30 cents...it was 1939 all right! I also like the charge for "Case general malaise & persistent headaches." The guy had wit!
  19. I saw that Criterion is reissuing and expanded version of Hitchcock's "The Lady Vanishes." I wonder if that means they will be reissuing their other Hitchcock titles. I still have the old one; guess I should eBay it. In the meanwhile, I look forward to receiving "La Jetee/San Soleil." And I really look forward to their issue of 'Days of Heaven" in November. I've seen the cover of the upcoming Criterion re-release of The Lady Vanishes and I much prefer the cover of the old one. On the other hand, I'd certainly welcome another Criterion edition of Notorious.
  20. Eddie Costa! As usual, you hit the nail on the head.
  21. But just how much gravy is on that train? That is the question. A lot, my friend. Enough to last a lifetime. Wow. Maybe they should call it Gravy Warehouse. It has the one and only Herman Foster on piano. So there's plenty of GREEEAAAASSSSE to go with the gravy. MG Sounds unhealthy.
  22. Whatever I payed for it was worth every penny and then some. This has to be one of the most played compilation CD's in my collection.
  23. There are one or two El Pollo Locos around here. The chicken is nothing to write home about.
  24. At that price I could easily become a Hat-maniac.
