  1. Hah, you don't even have the faintest idea what you're missing there! mine's on order! it's also online for free (see my web favourites) but you have to register. Kraus' monstrous play "Die letzten Tage der Menschheit" (the last days of makind/humanity - the end of the world, in fact) is one of the important literary texts to document the madness that was World War 1, and his "Fackel", a publication he led for years, first with texts of himself and others, later exclusively written by himself, is one of the important periodicals of those decades, and it contains virtually his complete works, including texts not doomed fit for inclusion in Suhrkamp's collected/complete works edition... he's definitely one of the most sarcastic and fascinating personalities of 20c german (austrian, to be exact, very decidedly austrian) literature. Hey, I'd be interested in an English version. I've been a Kraus fan for years. Have several anthologies of his writings in English translation. I even participated in a staged reading of "The Last Days of Mankind" here in Boston a number of years ago. I'll definitely be checking out your site. Man, I'll bet you're even into Little Lulu.
  2. The Fleischer Popeye's are considered classics, and yes, TV is where I first saw them, too.
  3. The stranges thing is, if you go to Yoshi's you'll see plenty of pictures on the wall of African/American musicians who've played there.
  4. Nonsense. When I bought the complete Haydn symphonies, I listened to all 33 CD's instantly! ( )
  5. I believe there was a union-led recording ban in 1948, but surely that would have applied to all types of music, not just big bands. I think there was also some kind of entertainment tax which made attending live venues more expensive (and no doubt providing an early, if unintended, boost for the TV industry). Yes, the entertainment tax was one piece of the puzzle. I read that it dated from WWII, but when the war ended the government negelcted to phase out the tax, at least for a few years. This certainly didn't help matters.
  6. Blasphemy? Not at ALL! Gould's vocalizing drives me nuts. Always has.
  7. Somehow reminds me of Joe Jackson.
  8. I always thought Charlie Haden looks like a freakin' serial killer on this cover.
  9. Yeah he does that every time I play the album. You'd think he'd learn! Which reminds me of a joke: Two Aggies (you heard me) were watching a story on the 10 o'clock news where a guy was seen threatening to jump off a bridge. The first Aggie makes a bet with second, "I bet he jumps." "$10 says he doesn't" As the story continued the man, in fact did jump. As they settle the bet. The first Aggie confesses "Man, I can't take your money, I saw the same story on the 6 o' clock news." The other replied "No, you keep the $10. I saw the story on the 6 o'clock news too. I just didn't think he do it the second time." "Aggie"??
  10. So you should have moved earlier and then maybe the real set would be still in print and you wouldn't have to buy from scavengers. The real problem is people with the money "hold back" for a deal. Now reward someone else. *Ouch!*
  11. You really hit the nail on the head there. Even during the Beatles period McCartney perpetrated some appauling crud: "Hello Goodbye," "Maxwell's Silver Hammer," "Ob-La-De," "Fixing A Hole"---signs of things to come.
  12. Those bastards.
  13. "It was 40 years ago today..." This makes me feel so old.
  14. I feel you, 'moose. Unfortunately, there'll always be a market for "manufactured 'musicians'" marketed to people who don't really like music for itself, if you know what I mean. American Idol is a prime example of this sort of mentality... Watch out, Moose! He's tryin' to feel you!!
  15. That's been my feeling for some time.
  16. Man, that's pretty depressing. I hope you guys are wrong on this.
  17. I heard that too! We've got to stop meeting like this. Okay.
  18. Yes, but at least in that far off future we'll all have jet-packs.
  19. Thank God for a lifetime of out-of-control music buying; I've already got these.
  20. "Thick, lustrous hair is very important to me."
  21. I've seen The Blob on TCM, but not the Criterion.
