  1. After The Heat was my favorite by those three---man, I used to love that album! I should listen to it again sometime. My favorites of the ambient albums used to be On Land and the Apollo album...but I must admit, I haven't played any of the ambient albums in ages and ages, whereas I've always seemed to give one or more of his four 70's "song" albums a spin every now and then. The CD remasters have reminded me that I still like these albums and just how well they hold up. (I remember liking Evening Star, too; never much cared for My Life In the Bush of Ghosts.)
  2. You and me both. Same here. Shouldn't there be a statute of limitations on April Fool's jokes? Like, only on April 1st for fuck's sake.
  3. Wow. Just when you get to thinking that someone is going to last forever, they pass away. His books helped make high school more bearable for me. R.I.P.
  4. I really love V.S.O.P. I've got a slew of them, and in fact recently picked up the Victor Feldman On Vibes album. I think my favorites are the Pepper Adams 5 and Eddie Costa 5.
  5. Hey, that's the guy I interviewed for this show. He teaches here at IU; quite a jazz fan. Wow, I'm liking this guy more all the time. I just finished his The Magic World of Orson Welles, which is excellent, despite the off-putting title, which was foisted on him by the publisher. You mean, you don't think it's a magic world???
  6. Any questions about Kurt Russell's acting ability should be put to rest by "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes" one of the underrated films of all time.
  7. You haven't heard "Heroes"? I think both Heroes and Low have a lot of good stuff on them; Lodger less so. I recently purchased the remastered CD version of Warm Jets and found that I still treasure much of it (this time "On Some Faraway Beach" really got to me.) But if you like that, you should REALLY listen to Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) and then Another Green World. The latter remains his masterpiece, for my money.
  8. To be honest, I didn't know you'd left.
  9. BTW, anyone hear "I Understand" from the new Sloan album? Quite a nice Beach Boys homage.
  10. That's funny, the Jazztet box keeps calling my name even though I have four of the albums... But I'd also really like to get the Woody Herman Columbia, the Tal Farlow, the Ellinton small groups, and a bunch of others. Bruce, if you like the Jazztet, four is definitely not enough. I know.
  11. When I was growing up the Beach Boys were considered terminally uncool; a joke, in fact. It wasn't until college that I even began to appreciate their accomplishment. Having said that, I found and still find Pet Sounds somewhat overrated. Sure it has some great songs on it, but it doesn't hang together as one of the greatest albums of all time for me, despite its seminal role. Love You, however, has long been a personal favorite and I still think it's one of their best albums. It always amazes me that even some fans underrate it. A couple of my favorite Beach Boys songs: "I Get Around" and "Good Vibrations"---obvious choices perhaps, but sincere. And yes, "Good Vibrations" has been overplayed to within an inch of its life, but it's nevertheless great, and one of the best songs of the decade.
  12. I really liked that series.
  13. I've been wondering.
  14. Occasionally they plant trees. Not often enough, I'll grant you, but still...

  16. That's like less than six bucks per album...? Not bad.
  17. Maybe so, but don't overlook the string quartets. They're great.
  18. Cashews are my favorite too, but lately I've gotten into pecans.
  19. I don't think so. But mine is a widely but far from universally held opinion. I'd say it's a 40/60 affair at best. The focus was fading fast, and there are moments of bland inertia as well as moments that shine with at least some of the old sparkle (and "In Time" is one of the marvels of the age by anybody's standards). I think Jim hit the nail right on the head here.
  20. Well, since I don't have the original issue, I say whatever gets it back into print.
  21. Even if they did, I still love it.
