  1. You won't be sorry!
  2. One of my favorite albums of all time! Nice little write-up, Jim. There was a time when I used to drive my roommates crazy playing this album over and over, several times a day, like clockwork. Most definately on my "desert island" list.
  3. Anywhere from 10pm to 3am. (Usually toward the middle of that range though.)
  4. This is a case where I'm proud to run with the herd. Sign me up to that list Uncle Skid! I've had the Blue Mitchell set for ages and enjoy it from start to finish. Nothing wrong with the last disc as far as I can see. Essential jazz.
  5. "Movie Love In the Fifties" by James Harvey---fun movie writing.
  6. Glad you and everyone else around you is OK, Alexander. Black ice!!!! NOT your fault. That stuff is deadly, no kidding. Every once in a while, you're reminded that driving is dangerous. A few weeks ago I was driving up highway 280 with my younger son in the back seat (my wife and older son were off somewhere else at the time). It was raining, then the rain got worse, one of those Bay Area typhoons we get in the winter sometimes. The wind kicked up (...and up...), the visibility went down, and I started getting nervous. Then up ahead I saw a car spinning out. It was sliding slowly across four lanes, while spinning end-to-end. It then bounced off the right-side retaining wall and came to a stop. This whole time I was trying move into the left lane while avoiding any cars coming up behind me (when it rains in the Bay Area, I slow down while everyone else doesn't). Luckily, there were very few cars on this stretch of highway at this particular time, otherwise I could just picture the horrible pileup that would have ensued. My son was oblivious in the back seat, but it was a white-knuckle moment for me. I almost get shaky just thinking about it.
  7. VERY interested to see Blues In Orbit, as I've just about worn the grooves smooth on my vinyl copy.
  8. Seriously, the Bob Brookmeyer select looks good.
  9. I like Spiegelman a lot. Too bad he left the New Yorker. How about space art? Chesley Bonestell is one of my favorites.
  10. That's one cool cat!
  11. I didn't know he was so depressed. I hope he turns up OK. I've long been a fan of his work.
  12. She only played about one note before the cat freaked, so it's impossible to say. I think he just didn't like woodwinds.
  13. Anyone see The Simpsons the other night? Lisa got a new cat named "Coltrane" largely because of the name, and when she starts to play some Coltrane music on her sax, the cat screams and jumps out her 2nd-story window. I love it when they do a Lisa/jazz reference.

    Stan Getz

I actually got this as a birthday present one year. Got a gift card for Borders and went straight to the music section and found it. Never regretted getting it. In short:
  15. Well...maybe not. But it would be nice.
  16. One of the most religious musical experiances I ever had was listening to Ellington's Ko Ko very late at night once. Can't describe it.
  17. Not to beat a dead thread, but I detect more than a hint of Guaraldi in Cyrus Chestnut at times, an influence he's acknowledged. Cyrus knows good music when he hears it...
  18. Oh, and "The Cat"----all of Dietch's "Cat" cartoons have been collected by Fantagraphics in a huge hardcover book titled "Cat On Hot Thin Groove." Worth the money, especially if you're tired of straining your eyes on the miniscule reproductions of The Cat in Weirdo magazine.
  19. You and me both. Along with Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Cole, Cliff Sterrit, and about 200 other comics and cartoon artists. Right now I'm looking at a fairly new (2002) art book: "ART NOUVEAU The French Aesthetic" by Victor Arwas. A huge, beautiful book, full of lively reproductions. Must weigh five pounds though.
  20. Thanks for the tip, Berigan. One of these days... Funny that the Mayses bros.' Salesman should be mentioned; someone just highly recommended it to me, and I got it out of the library. Looking forward to it. Peeping Tom was one of those movies that could be said to be stomach-turningly ahead of its time. How's the commentary track on that one?
  21. I'd say the word "cool" in the non-temperature sense was probably kept alive for the majority of Americans in the 1970's by the Fonz. Aaayyyyy.
  22. Friedlander was just a great photographer, period. The happy fact that he also took some jazz photos is pure gravy.
  23. You guys are killin' me! I've been meaning to get the Criterion edition of My Man Godfrey for some time. One of my favorite screwball comedies. Should have asked for it for Christmas, damnit!
  24. Man, they ALL sound good! Personally, my first impulse would be to jump on the "Swing Sounds" (#16)....then I'd go for numbers 9,10, and 11. But that's knowing nothing of the labels involved, the quality of pressing, and so on. Just what looks the most enticing, musically, to me. Looks like you'd find it hard to go wrong, with a list like that. Have fun!

    Stan Getz

Absolutely solid recommendations so far! I've got to toss in another vote for the Stan Getz with Cal Tjader album. Not the first Getz album I got, but always struck me as a great place to start. After that, The Complete Roost Recordings, pictured above. Albums I'd be willing to bet you'll end up listening to again and again and again. Warning: Once you start buying Getz albums, it's hard to stop. Have fun!
