  1. Dave, have you heard the recently re-issued "Bossas and Ballads" which features the two with George Mraz, bass, and Victor Lewis, drums? It was actually the first album that Getz recorded for A&M in 1989, but not issued at the time for some reason. Anyway, you'll probably dig it! (I do.)
  2. I agree. Don't let him in.
  3. Yes. (Couldn't have put it better...)
  4. The bass and drums are there, just implied.
  5. TATUM???? That's going a bit far, but I love Chestnut. Soul Food is one of his best, but I would also recommend his first Atlantic album, Revelation. And his 1995 album, Earth Stories, is worth a few dozen listens. Also, he kicks ass live.
  6. I love this album. Been recommending it to anybody who would listen for years, but it's a tough sell because of the price. Considering the circumstances, I think Getz sounds amazingly good here. I think this was only the second Getz album that I ever bought, harbinger of many more.
  7. Very heartening news. Now to get that thing rolling!
  8. To jazzbo's recommendations I would add only Martian Time Slip, Ubik, and Flow My Tears the Policeman Said. That collection from the 70s, The Best of Philip K. Dick was a milestone for me. That entire "Best of--" series (Ballantine/Del Rey, I believe) was great, they should all be kept in print in perpetuity IMHO, but then, I'm a nerd.
  9. He be jazz. Don't let the Peanuts association fool you.
  10. I didn't feel this as I happened to be driving down the SF peninsula when it happened. There was an announcement on the radio that an earthquake had just occurred somewhere in California. Gee, that really narrows it down! Got to a computer and found out that the epicenter was close to San Simeon, which we took the kids to see 2 or 3 years ago! And it caused buildings to sway in SF and LA. Yikes. I wonder how badly San Luis Obispo was hit, it's very close to the epicenter. Shit, I would gladly trade all of California's damn quakes for all the snow, sleet, slush, and ice of New England. Call me crazy, but quakes spook me!
  11. Is that anything like the border between "ugliness" and "despair"?
  12. Why, remember the tune of course, and naturally go back to where I left off. Can't stand to start a CD over when I'm only part-way through it.
  13. DAMNit! I read this thread, then I had insomnia the following night!! The power of suggestion?
  14. As it happens, I've been listening to the Desmond/Hall a lot lately. Has to be one of the best box sets of all time!
  15. A lot of people think the best jazz club around is Yoshi's, but that's in Oakland, not SF. It's near Jack London Square.
  16. Way back when I found a cheap German pressing of Aftermath, by the Stones. Yum.
  17. Good point! $750K can allow you to buy your way out of a very deep hole. Personally, you'd find me in sunny New England, vacation capitol of the world!
  18. I'd take the $750k, move to the Bay Area, and buy one-fourth of a house. Woopeee!
  19. Moose, you know I love ya, but you be a friggin' idiot! C'mon, guys, Moose has GOT to be kidding! Obviously. ....Right, Moose?
  20. I think Adventure is an underrated album (the only real problem is that side two isn't as good as side one). I, too, would have mentioned The Feelies and The Soft Boys (and Wire) but I felt the list was getting long as it was. I've since gotten CD copies of quite a few of the albums on my list, but for me there's nothing to compare with the experiance of buying an intriguing LP, getting it home, putting the needle in the groove, and having it blow your mind.
  21. Right now the Morgan/Shorter. I seem to come back to it the most. The Mobley's right up there, of course, as are about 10 others.
