  1. Yeah, that's one of the best things about SVU: the return of Dan Florek. I really missed him on L&O.
  2. What Jazzbo says is true, nevertheless this album is good. If you see it on sale don't be shy about grabbing it. You'll be glad you did.
  3. Looks like they blew it.
  4. Is it just me, or do the tray photos just keep getting better? It's just a nice little extra, but the tray photos in this latest crop of Conns are particularly cool.
  5. I'm a Hennessey man. I'm also with Jazzmoose in liking the oringinal the most (been watching since the days of Paul Sorvino) and not a big fan of SVU. I checked it out for the first season, then grew tired of the somewhat creepy feel of the show, though lately I find myself watching it again once in a while. Criminal Intent is is probably the favorite TV "guilty pleasure" of my wife and I right now. It breaks several of the L&O franchise's most basic rules, not least that it's a star vehicle rather than an ensemble...CI is all about the D'Onofrio character, AND instead of being an average, if dedicated, plodder (like the cops on the original) he's a genius! Through most of the first season half the buzz I got from watching it was wondering what ELSE the guy was going to turn out to know: German? Italian? Farsi? Computer programming? The history of the Roman Empire? He's Supercop, some comic-book conflation of Sherlock Holmes and Encyclopedia Brown. Also, generally speaking, it's the least predictable L&O series. The twists and turns are more left field or bizzare than the other two, which is saying a lot. (That's on the whole; I didn't see the last SVU.) Still, when it's on it's game, the original L&O remains the class act of the bunch. Imho, of course. Also----gotta love that Jerry Orbach. Voice of a candelabra or seen-it-all cop, Jerry's your man. I like the new DA, too.
  6. Indeed. I understand they want to give these RVG's a different "look" to instantly differentiate them from the earlier BN's, and they probably think the smaller type looks classy...but SHEESH!! I hate having to bend close to my CD shelves like the Hunchback of Notre Dame just so I won't pick out the wrong album.
  7. Yes!! (And the Eldridge-Verve. ...And Columbia Herman.)
  8. This music took me a while to warm up to. Back in '91 I got the Mosaic set, but only a few of the tracks moved me; for most I felt 'outside' the music looking in, so to speak. (In fact, I actually---horror of horrors---sold it.) But I've listened to a lot more "West Coast"-type jazz since then and when I found this double-CD used and bought it on a whim recently I found the music instantly accessable. Just shows how your ears can stretch over time. Perhaps what left me cold a dozen years ago was the kind of "third streamy" (to use an absurd neologism) element to the music. Now that doesn't bother me at all. One thing I really like is the sense of clarity and space to the arrangements. You feel as if you can hear every note distinctly and follow every instrumental line at all times. That may be an illusion, but it's nice. (JSnry, Late---good comments!!)
  9. I've had similar problems for the last couple of weeks. Very frustrating.
  10. That's why I'm keeping it for the forseeable future. The people who LIKE All-Seeing Eye seem to usually like it a whole LOT. Maybe someday I'll hear what they're hearing...
  11. Now let me get this straight----should I take the kids to see it?
  12. Got to agree that Am I Blue and Slow Drag don't do much for me. However, I had low expectations for Bossa Nova Baccanal so wasn't dissapointed by it. Also, The All Seeing Eye and Hub-Tones don't do much for me either, but I'm hanging on to them, for now at least.
  13. "There's no getting away with the simplicity of it's success -- great script based on a good book, good actors working with great characters, a great director empowered to be great again." --Ian Nathan
  14. No, I'm almost certain that they are two different things, and I agree: A CD that included both would be great.
  15. Is this accurate? 45s only cost 10 cents in the 50s? My memory only goes back to the late 60s when they were $1. The key phrase here is, "adjusting for inflation..."
  16. Try renting Out of Sight, a hellava good movie with lots of great supporting performances. This was the movie were Clooney proved he could be good in the right role (and where he stopped the constant headbobbing and looking down).
  17. Elmer Bernstein's soundtrack to The Sweet Smell of Success is pretty cool. Perhaps too brassy to be considered quietly moody, but very good.
  18. Jazzbo, what do you think of Shorter's Vee-Jay work? This is the stuff I come back to again and again and again with increased appreciation. To my ears it has the swinging and melodic qualities that I usually treasure.
  19. I'm looking forward to this. I'm not a big Cohen brothers fan (like some of their movies, loathe others) but I hear that with this one they don't wear their snotty cleverness on their sleeves, but rather put together a movie to entertain non-geeks. And Catherine Zeta-Jones...um...that is...er...hmmm.... SHWINNNG!!
  20. What? WHAT? When is For Better Or Worse stopping?
  21. Yeah, I'm seeing Intolerable Cruelty, Mystic River, and School of Rock before I see the new Tarantino flick (if I ever do). I'm in the same boat as JSangry and Jazzmoonse on this----my instincts are giving me thumbs down on spending $10 on Kill Bill, even though I saw Pulp Fiction three times back in '94. And what's with this "Vol.1" shit? It's only the first half of a long movie, the second half of which will be released next year?? The Hell with THAT.
  22. The whole idea is more than a little creepy...
  23. Well, I got it. Now to get Caramba (aye...) One weird thing that never happened before, it had two booklets inside! Really makes me wish the cover were better.
