This is a terrific album. I have it on a two-fer, but it's just been re-issued by the Koch Jazz label.
-
It also includes the albums Back On the Scene, The 45 Session, Walkin' and Talkin', and Congo Lament (an Ike Quebec album that Bennie Green plays on). I've bought four Selects so far, and this one has gotten the most play at my house. I think it's well worth getting and you'll like it a lot.

Yes, S. Swede, back then I was barely aware of the Connoisseurs as a separate series but I managed to pick up Stop and Listen, True Blue, Whistle Stop, and The Congregation. Guess I was going through a buying spree at the time.

Lester Bangs sure didn't like it. I think it may have had a lot to do with the real Joey Gallo being a violent, murderous, psychotic scumbag. Then Dylan comes along and mythologizes him as this misunderstood, basically good, loner/rebel figure. Seems to have rubbed Lester the wrong way... As for The Prisoner, it sure has one of the worst BN album covers in the entire RVG series so far. Has anyone done a thread about worst (American) RVG covers?

Yeah, thanks for the link, Eric. Looks like a good magazine. -
Yes indeed.

Congrats, Indy! We all have magic days like that now and then-----what a feeling! Makes up for all the times you scour the used bins and come up with nothing much. Every once in a while life gets lush.

Damn, dana-, beat me to the punch. I THOUGHT it was the Clovers. Funny name for a band that can cook like that.
-
Wasn't My Aim Is True the only early EC album to NOT feature the Attractions? I think the crack backing-band was the Clovers, though I couldn't swear to it. First Attractions/Costello album was This Year's Model, if I'm not mistaken, and the musical contrast with MAIT is interesting. Less guitar licks, but a more intense, aggressive sound that seems to leap off the vinyl. Still, I certainly agree that MAIT is certainly one of EC's finest albums, and may still be his most consistent.

Hey, Gary, how about a bio of Monk? -
Not my favorite either, but I like it a lot more than you do, Soul Stream. My favorite part is where Herbie jumps up and yells, "I am not a number; I am a FREE MAN!!!!"

I first started listening to jazz at about 18/19----had a half-dozen jazz albums (including KoB, of course) then bought a few per year for a while, and listened to some from libraries too. It wasn't until the age of 24/25 that I REALLY got heavily, deeply, fully committed to the music----in other words, bit by the bug, bigtime. So I checked 20's. Perhaps going through a lengthy blues and r&b phase in the meantime helped set the stage. When jazz became a passion, I recall three things in particular helping to set it off: I got intensely into Ellington, really into Basie, and bigtime into Parker, almost simultaneously. Duke, the Count, & Bird---that'll do it folks!

...our five year mission--- --to explore strange old LP's... --to SEEK OUT new albums; new vinyl recordings... --to boldly go where no geek has gone before!! Na-naa, na na-na-na-na..... (Just had to get that out of my system.)

I don't know--who is he? Hmmm.....the name sounds familiar..... Could that be THE Kevin?? If so, welcome! I'd send you a PM, but apparently they almost never work.

At the Half Note Cafe and Black Fire...they will be mine... OH YES... they will.

I always enjoy Kevin Whitehead's radio reviews. I wish he'd review ALL the new Conns! -
Victor Fleming was the original director, King Vidor finished the last month or so (from what i've read), but i'm not sure why. Mervyn LeRoy was the producer. I stand corrected. Guess 1939 was the year for changing directors on films, a la "Gone With the Wind."

I've wondered about this myself. Maybe it's just that Lion had so many things on the burner at once that Brooks got a bit lost in the shuffle. He wouldn't be the only one, though he may well be my favorite "neglected" Blue Note artist. Also, there are rumors that he was increasingly beset by drug addiction as well. But whatever, I think he was one of the all-time greats. There are times that I like him more than Mobley (no flaming, please!) and I love Mobley.

I had a lunchbox in kindergarden and first grade, but then started brown-bagging it. Maybe kids at my school didn't think they were cool. Of course, I remember one time in 1st grade this kid and I started bashing each other's brains out with our lunchboxes... Maybe that had something to do with it. Ed, I lived one-and-half blocks from my elementary school and STILL had to stay there for lunch! Now I feel cheated!! -
Without a doubt, the Mosaic Brooks LP set is indispensable, but it's WAY out of print. If you find it for reasonable $, get it, but with all four CD re-issues you needn't worry. That's why you MUST get Back to the Tracks and Waiting Game!! ...And don't forget Open Sesame, Hubbard's first album; almost like having an extra Tina Brooks album! Not only does Brooks play on it, but it features two Brooks' originals that aren't on any of his albums-as-a-leader. Yeah!
-
I just listened to this again, and disc 2 strikes me as very good. No, it's not Earth-shaking music, and perhaps won't grab most people as quickly as Turrentine's other early BN albums, but it's certainly worth having.

AB, I'll bet Texas is looking better than ever right now! -
Actually, my favorite Tina Brooks is True Blue, but I agree---you should not hesitate to snag Back to the Tracks and Waiting Game. If you're anything like me, the longer you have'em, the more you'll like'em. Brooks just reveals more depths and riches with the passage of time. Absolutely essential.
