  1. Not to beat a dead thread, but I detect more than a hint of Guaraldi in Cyrus Chestnut at times, an influence he's acknowledged. Cyrus knows good music when he hears it...
  2. Oh, and "The Cat"----all of Dietch's "Cat" cartoons have been collected by Fantagraphics in a huge hardcover book titled "Cat On Hot Thin Groove." Worth the money, especially if you're tired of straining your eyes on the miniscule reproductions of The Cat in Weirdo magazine.
  3. You and me both. Along with Harvey Kurtzman, Jack Cole, Cliff Sterrit, and about 200 other comics and cartoon artists. Right now I'm looking at a fairly new (2002) art book: "ART NOUVEAU The French Aesthetic" by Victor Arwas. A huge, beautiful book, full of lively reproductions. Must weigh five pounds though.
  4. Thanks for the tip, Berigan. One of these days... Funny that the Mayses bros.' Salesman should be mentioned; someone just highly recommended it to me, and I got it out of the library. Looking forward to it. Peeping Tom was one of those movies that could be said to be stomach-turningly ahead of its time. How's the commentary track on that one?
  5. I'd say the word "cool" in the non-temperature sense was probably kept alive for the majority of Americans in the 1970's by the Fonz. Aaayyyyy.
  6. Friedlander was just a great photographer, period. The happy fact that he also took some jazz photos is pure gravy.
  7. You guys are killin' me! I've been meaning to get the Criterion edition of My Man Godfrey for some time. One of my favorite screwball comedies. Should have asked for it for Christmas, damnit!
  8. Man, they ALL sound good! Personally, my first impulse would be to jump on the "Swing Sounds" (#16)....then I'd go for numbers 9,10, and 11. But that's knowing nothing of the labels involved, the quality of pressing, and so on. Just what looks the most enticing, musically, to me. Looks like you'd find it hard to go wrong, with a list like that. Have fun!

    Stan Getz

Absolutely solid recommendations so far! I've got to toss in another vote for the Stan Getz with Cal Tjader album. Not the first Getz album I got, but always struck me as a great place to start. After that, The Complete Roost Recordings, pictured above. Albums I'd be willing to bet you'll end up listening to again and again and again. Warning: Once you start buying Getz albums, it's hard to stop. Have fun!
  10. This STINKS!! I don't ever remember a Mosaic going *poof* like this with no time on the Running low/Last chance list. I've missed some good sets because I've stopped paying attention to Mosaic for a while, but at least that was MY choice (sort of). Well, if the superb Verve double-CD that ghost mentioned is still in print, that's something at least. Chris: With an avatar like THAT you still don't have the Mobley?? Whaa??? I highly recommend it, though I admit to being biased as Hell. B)
  11. I'm personally very glad this finally got re-issued. It's not Soul Station, but it's a must for any Mobley fan.
  12. I could have sworn that Introducing Johnny Griffin was re-issued as an early Connoisseur.
  13. The Third Man I also like the commentary on Grand Illusion. Also, the 2-disc package for The Killers (both '46 and '64 versions included) is a lot of fun.
  14. Here's something for the DVD wish-list: "The Job" complete. I'm not holding me breath.
  15. My first too! In complete agreement with you Brad. I already had over half the tracks in the set, yet it's still my favorite Properbox. For newcomers to bop, it would be a treasure trove. (A nice affordable treasure trove!)
  16. Dang, you got that right!
  17. OK, I see that Criterion has just come out with The Red Circle. Good! I'll start saving now.
  18. I'm glad that Criterion released Bob le Flambeur but why did the jerks have to re-translate the subtitles??? Make the titles more visually clear if you want, but don't change the goddamn wording idiots!!!!!!!!!! (...puff..puff...) I feel better now. Having said that, I wouldn't mind Criterion coming out with ALL of Melville's movies. I saw The Red Circle on the big screen last year, a restored copy, and liked it a lot. Then about a month ago I rented a video of it and man, did it stink (the quality of the print, I mean)! Needs a good DVD release. Come to think, when is someone going to release Crime Wave on DVD? Andre de Toth, Sterling Hayden, and a very young Charles Bronson in a supporting role. Porco Rosso, widescreen, with English subtitles. When?
  19. Good book! For some reason my son likes me to read it aloud.
  20. Don't forget the Fats Navarro! Great set. Some of the Proper 2-CD compilations are also very worthwhile.
  21. I'll put in a vote for "Moneyball: the Art of Winning An Unfair Game" by Michael Lewis. Fascinating. I've been meaning to read Halberstam's "The Teammates"---maybe now is a good time.
  22. Didn't Swallow do a Blue Note as a leader once?
  23. I could swear I've got an LP compilation of Big Maybelle buried somewhere around here... But I'd buy this baby just for the cover! (I'm firmly of the opinion that you can judge many an album by its cover, and this one just yells out "Good stuff! Buy me!!" I once bought a John Lee Hooker album just for the cover, and it turned out to be one of the best blues records I ever got.)
