  1. Sounds dated to me.
  2. Will be watching "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" later. Looking forward to spending some more time with George Smiley.
  3. Still younger than me... But honestly, no one I've talked to has ever said that they do anything but completely skip the halftime show. One wonders why they even have one.
  4. Boy, they must have offered Townshend and Daltry a really huge pile of money to do this.
  5. "Peabody and Sherman" was classic! And getting Edward Everett Horton to narrate "Fractured Fairy Tales" was inspired.
  6. Best animated TV series ever? Could be.
  7. Agree - one of the best movies of recent years. I very much agree too. It reminded me of being a teen and going to see foreign films at the library and "art" cinemas in Boston and the Harvard Film Archive.
  8. I'm a sucker for any and pretty much all of his collaborative albums...the Ben Webster, Desmond, Hodges, Monk, hell even the Getz I actually like quite a lot. They may have seemed like a publicist's notion, but as Stereojack so rightly said Mulligan seemed to thrive in these settings.
  9. I always thought of "Beyond Lies the Wub" as one of the greatest sf story titles of all time.
  10. With any luck, will finish up Smiley's People tonight.
  11. Damn phonies!
  12. I'd have to say I started out with the classics. Kind of Blue, the Louis Armstrong Hot Five and Hot Sevens, Basie, Ellington, and the Parker Dial sessions. Moved on from there.
  13. As usual, The Onion puts it all in perspective.
  14. Yeah, growing up in the 60's and 70's they NEVER showed repeats of "Have Gun" on TV where I lived. Finally checking it out on DVD a few years ago I was surprised at how good it was.
  15. I'll miss the articles, blogging, constant appearances on radio and talk shows, and most of all the steady flow of new stories. (Or not.)
  16. Not the most fortuitous choice of name, but I'd like to hear it.
  17. That bastard.
  18. That's a big favorite here, Bev!
  19. Starting Smiley's People.
  20. I saw that closing speech of Conan's and must say it was great to see him end the show on such a generous and classy note.
  21. A talented beauty who was poorly served by Hollywood. RIP
  22. For me it's not owning a television that slows me down. I'm amazed by people who, when I mention not having one (usually in response to "did you see" questions, I get serious sympathy and offers of old televisions. They just can't believe that someone would do without one by choice. I got the same thing back when I didn't bother owning a TV in the mid-to-late 80's. People incredulous and actually offering me old TV's. I must admit two things right away, though: Not owning a TV for 3 or 4 years, I STILL managed to get almost nothing done, and NOW I watch more TV than when I was 13. And I, too, will be one of those people watching Conan's last Tonight Show episode out of morbid curiosity.
  23. On a Brubeck kick. In Europe: Live In Copenhagen, March 5, 1958 Time Out Time Further Out The Great Concerts Jazz Impressions of Japan
  24. I agree, "Headlines" was the best part of Leno's Tonight Show. The interviews were either a snooze-fest or painful.
