  1. I'm a sucker for any and pretty much all of his collaborative albums...the Ben Webster, Desmond, Hodges, Monk, hell even the Getz I actually like quite a lot. They may have seemed like a publicist's notion, but as Stereojack so rightly said Mulligan seemed to thrive in these settings.
  2. I always thought of "Beyond Lies the Wub" as one of the greatest sf story titles of all time.
  3. With any luck, will finish up Smiley's People tonight.
  4. Damn phonies!
  5. I'd have to say I started out with the classics. Kind of Blue, the Louis Armstrong Hot Five and Hot Sevens, Basie, Ellington, and the Parker Dial sessions. Moved on from there.
  6. As usual, The Onion puts it all in perspective.
  7. Yeah, growing up in the 60's and 70's they NEVER showed repeats of "Have Gun" on TV where I lived. Finally checking it out on DVD a few years ago I was surprised at how good it was.
  8. I'll miss the articles, blogging, constant appearances on radio and talk shows, and most of all the steady flow of new stories. (Or not.)
  9. Not the most fortuitous choice of name, but I'd like to hear it.
  10. That bastard.
  11. That's a big favorite here, Bev!
  12. Starting Smiley's People.
  13. I saw that closing speech of Conan's and must say it was great to see him end the show on such a generous and classy note.
  14. A talented beauty who was poorly served by Hollywood. RIP
  15. For me it's not owning a television that slows me down. I'm amazed by people who, when I mention not having one (usually in response to "did you see" questions, I get serious sympathy and offers of old televisions. They just can't believe that someone would do without one by choice. I got the same thing back when I didn't bother owning a TV in the mid-to-late 80's. People incredulous and actually offering me old TV's. I must admit two things right away, though: Not owning a TV for 3 or 4 years, I STILL managed to get almost nothing done, and NOW I watch more TV than when I was 13. And I, too, will be one of those people watching Conan's last Tonight Show episode out of morbid curiosity.
  16. On a Brubeck kick. In Europe: Live In Copenhagen, March 5, 1958 Time Out Time Further Out The Great Concerts Jazz Impressions of Japan
  17. I agree, "Headlines" was the best part of Leno's Tonight Show. The interviews were either a snooze-fest or painful.
  18. You know, I think Mary Astor ruins this movie myself. For the reason you mention, and also, she just isn't attractive enough to fit the part in my opinion. I disagree. Having finally read the book a few years ago, I can see what you mean. She's at least 10 years older than the Brigid in the book. But that makes her character more interesting. In the movie she's a woman in her 30's who was always used to manipulating men through her looks, but now she's getting to the point in life where she realizes she won't be able to do that much longer. It makes her rather desperate. She perhaps sees Spade as her "last chance" in a way. This adds a whole new dimension and richness to a character who, frankly, in the book was just a cardboard cutout femme fatale.
  19. I haven't been able to stand Leno for years and years. He's always represented a kind of show-biz mediocrity to me. But then, I'm still under 50, even if just barely.
  20. Agreed! RIP
  21. I read 4 or 5 of the Spenser novels in the 80's. At the place where I was working a bunch of co-workers were passing the paperbacks around, so I got to read the first 3 or 4 for free. But then I happened to read a much later one, #10 or more, and it didn't seem as good. Part of the kick to them was the Boston locations, as that's where I was living at the time.
  22. That must be one of the first things she ever did. Also used to be one of my favorite episodes growing up. That was the pilot for a possible spinoff series that was never picked up.
  23. Gee, Ubu, I still think a lot of your picks were good ones.
