  1. I agree, Ferguson is now the funniest guy on late night TV, if you can stand to stay up that late. I still don't understand why Leno didn't just retire after leaving The Tonight Show, like Carson did. And why is NBC so bent on keeping him at any cost? Finally, when Leno took over The Tonight Show in '92 his ratings lagged for at least two years. The network stuck with him until he found an audience. Why can't they do the same for Conan? Instead they're destroying a 60-year-old tradition? It makes zero sense.
  2. BTW, thanks for the link, Jim! Very cool stuff. I instantly was put in mind of old New Yorker cartoons, and then it turns out Dunn was their most prolific contributor in his time. And his wife was a New Yorker cartoonist, too! What a family!
  3. That Swank cover really reminds me of Frank Kelly Freas.
  4. I shouldn't have been surprised at this, considering his age...he certainly accomplished a lot. I love his films. A great talent. He will be missed.
  5. It would help if I could get it for $40 or less. I mean, damn, I already have all of this music in other forms, so unless it's a bargain or it's got something extra, I think I'll give it a pass. (Still, there's something I love about that label name: "Hip-O." Ain't that just a spiffy name?)
  6. I would consider it too, if it weren't 70$ for 4 discs.
  7. See a good movie, listen to some good music, get together with friends or family, have some tasty food... Maybe even have, I don't know, a party of some sort.
  8. Right now I think the funniest stuff of TV is The Daily Show and The Late, Late Show With Craig Ferguson...at least for me personally.
  9. 25 years is a hell of a long time in the music biz, or in any sort of corporate gig these days.
  10. I've got the old OJC, American version, and it sounds just fine to me.
  11. Guess I'll just Netflix the things.
  12. Always thought that sounded like the name of a punk group.
  13. Well, James Cameron pretty much developed the technology himself, so while Scott or Jackson may make better movies in the future using this technology, it will all be due to Cameron's innovation. Most of Cameron's movies have been like that....say what you will about the stories, but from a technological standpoint, they set the standard. I sort of question whether Jackson could have improved the story all THAT much... Look what he did with King Kong: Took a straightforward, exciting story and turned it into a ponderous snoozefest.
  14. Hope you have a wonderful birthday!
  15. I wasn't aware that there's a different aspect-ratio for the two, though that makes perfect sense. One thing I don't like about IMAX is that it sometimes seems more like a theme-park ride to me than seeing a movie. But for some movies it works well. The experience can be either pleasurably immersive or bludgeoning.
  16. I couldn't get the thing to work at all.
  17. You should check out the Boetticher/Scott movie The Tall T sometime---Boone is quite convincing in it as a hardbitten criminal.
  18. Regular 3D is good enough for most purposes, but if you don't mind the extra monetary outlay, IMAX will give you a total-immersion experience that's quite nice. I'm kind of tempted to see it again in IMAX, actually, and I don't usually do that.
  19. My condolences. Sure sounds like she lived a long, full life.
  20. I of course heard of radio shows becoming TV shows, but had no idea it sometimes went the other way. Thinking his first name was "Wire"---that's priceless! Just the way a kid of a certain age would think.
  21. I became a fan a couple of years ago when I discovered several seasons in the library...and a friend told me about Herrmann composing the theme. At first it was a trip just seeing Richard Boone play a good guy, after having been a longtime fan of the film The Tall T, but I got used to that soon enough. The show was actually surprisingly progressive for it's time in some ways, too. I plan to watch some more of it on Netflix soon. Great show!
  22. They repeated that pilot on TV some years ago. I think it was on TVLand, when they were starting to show The Dick Van Dyke Show (this was a long time ago, come to think...) The pilot is really interesting, in that the basic idea is there, but it's all so different. BTW, for years and YEARS growing up, whenever I heard of a "Van Dyke" beard, or the painter, I thought of the show.
  23. I got it two years ago and really dug it. Sometimes I even play it outside the holidays.
  24. Just watched the last episode of The Wire. I'd have to say that the fifth and final season was quite good, overall, but not as good as the others due mainly to the length. Only 10 episodes instead of the usual 13. It felt rushed and left me feeling a little short-changed, although the last episode was particularly good. Nice that it was directed by my hero, Clark Johnson...I believe he also directed the first episode of the series, if my memory is not deceiving me. Nice symmetry in that.
