I don't have any of these, but have always been interested in them. Where is a good place to start?

I don't think there's anything wrong with collecting. You always have to remember that we all choose different ways to spend our money, and many people may not understand why we do that. I always have my eBay winnings mailed to my office, and when people find out how much I pay for stuff like OOP Mosaics, they think I'm insane. It's just a question of priorities. As a kid, I used to look at people around me and wonder what was wrong with their priorities for the same reason. My father has always been the greatest example of this to me. When I was in high school, he had 3 Porsches, a limited-edition Saleen Mustang and a Suburban all for himself. However, he refuses to spend more than $10 when he goes out to eat (Sizzler is about as good as it gets for my parents), only buys his suits extra cheap in LA's garment district, tries to stay only at Motel 6 when he travels. I always thought that this was really strange, but now that I'm older and spend a ton of money on things that many people don't care about, I understand a little better. Think of how big many of our music collections are. Think of how much money some people on this board spend on hi-fi systems. A lot of people would think we're insane. We just put our money where it means the most to us.

I was toying with the idea of taking advantage of this sale again (I bought the Jacquet set earlier in August), but then I made the mistake of telling my wife all the sets I wanted for my upcoming birthday. So, I got on the laptop while we were watching Lord of the Rings last night, and started playing around with different orders. I ended up ordering something not on my list, that I probably wouldn't have considered otherwise - the Duke Ellington Reprise set. The only Duke I've ever heard is the album he did with John Coltrane, so I'm pretty excited to hear something new. When I got up to go get my credit card, I said to my wife "Well, I'm going to master the possibilities" (referring to the Mastercard TV commercials) and my wife replied "what, you're going to the bathroom?" I got major dirty looks when she saw what I was doing, but I just used the "I'll get money for my birthday" excuse.

It's possible it was misspelled by its author in the first place, as the pronunciation of "mais" (more) and "mas" (but) is often very similar in Brazil, depending on the region. It's also possible, however unlikely, that it was written that way for people who are more familiar with Spanish, in the which case "mas" (more) would be correct.

YES! "Ocean's 11" was the first soundtrack that came to mind when I saw this thread. Other recent favorites: Lord of the Rings The Talented Mr. Ripley (not just for the jazz, either!) The Star Wars Prequels

Another mastermind here - INTJ.

And by the way, these bags are 2 servings max.

I pound this stuff like it's goin' out of style:
-
I've lost 75 lbs since January, and I'm still overweight. Ouch...

At the risk of embarassing myself further, I'll also admit I occasionally enjoy some Snoop-D-O-double-Gee and Dr. Dre.

Welcome back, Weizen! How was your trip? We've missed you around here.

I've mentioned in other threads that I primarily listened to death metal before I got into jazz, and I still have all my death metal CD's and still listen to them from time to time (usually when my wife is gone). Here's a favorite: If you've ever seen Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, these guys were in the movie. This particular album caught Bob Dole's attention in the early 90's, when he was on his music censorship kick. With what is quite possibly the most disgusting album cover I've ever seen, and song titles like "Addicted to Vaginal Skin," "Hammer Smashed Face" and "I Cum Blood," I can't imagine why. Can't say I'm into the lyrics or song titles (you can't understand a word sung anyway), but it's one of the classic albums of the genre.

Anyone like any of these? I get a lot of people raising their eyebrows or laughing at me when I listen to stuff like this. I never turn my music off at work, and since I use a 20GB MP3 player, I just put a bunch of different stuff on the playlist and let it run. Most people seem to think that jazz is the only thing I listen to, since that's most of what's on my player...But then every once in a while I throw in stuff from albums like these, just to keep 'em guessing!

YES! I listen to this stuff all the time too. George Michael wrote some great songs during this period. I think I'll go listen to some now.

I just woke up from a nap, and this seems REALLY heavy...

The US issues are definitely not copy-protected. I have made MP3's from the Rollins, Blakey, Silver and Gordon.

Weizen mentioned he was going to Germany in a thread a few weeks ago, but I don't believe he said when exactly he was going or for how long. Going to Munich

This isn't very obscure, but I don't see it mentioned very often and I think it's a great album. I was just listening to it again and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys jazz guitar, or who just wants to add a little extra Bobby Hutcherson to their collection.

I'm down to less than 10 right now, which is quite an improvement for me. Last year it was around 50 (I ordered almost 40 CD's during the Tower sale last summer ). I've been trying to only order new music when I REALLY want it, but then, I really want everything. I've just been feeling lately like I don't know the music in my collection well enough. When I was younger, I knew the names of all the songs on all my CD's, all the artists who played on them, etc. Now, I often can't remember the names of TWO of the songs on any given CD, and often only know the main performer and maybe one other person on the CD. That alone tells me I'm not spending enough time on my music.

Jazz (today) in Iowa, Missiouri, and the Midwest
vibes replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I think you have the size of the crowd about right. I was pretty impressed by the fact that most of these people did not appear to know who most of the artists were, and were most likely not really jazz fans at all, yet they seemed into the music and did stay around for a lot of it. You're lucky you got to meet Andrew. He's the entire reason I went. He's definitely in my top 5 jazz artists. There's a good chance I'll be there next year - my brother just moved to Iowa City, and just started his master's at the university. It will be much cheaper for me that way. -

Can't answer your question, R_T, but that was a good show. I'm sorry we didn't get to chat more. That was the worst drive home of my life. Didn't get home until 3am, and I usually go to sleep at 9-10pm. -
Mmmmmmh....I was wondering when someone was going to mention Nelly here.

After a dry spell, I've bought quite a few CD's in the last month: Art Blakey Mosaic Illinois Jacquet Mosaic Jack McDuff - Moon Rappin' (great AOW choice!) Lots of great albums out there.

What Do You Do? What Have You Done?
vibes replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
When I started college (Brigham Young University), I thought I wanted to be a biochemistry major and eventually go into medicine. I decided after a short time, however, that I should focus on something that I actually liked, so I switched to languages. I was working on a triple major in Mandarin, Spanish and Portuguese, and taking Korean on the side, when I decided to be a missionary for the Mormon church. I was sent to Hong Kong and learned Cantonese there. When I came back, I decided to just focus on Mandarin and get a minor in business. I worked full-time in market research call center management my last two years of college, and hated almost every minute of it. When I was offered my own call center to manage right before graduation, I turned it down. I really wanted to go into consulting, but I had no luck there (I suspect the Chinese major didn't help). So, I applied for jobs doing just about everything else - retail management, life insurance sales, government stuff. I finally decided on working at Best Buy corporate in Minnesota, and moved here the day after I graduated. I got married two months after that. The night before my wedding, the CIA called me and told me I was cleared to work for them. Unfortunately, Best Buy had a policy about signing bonuses being returned if you left within one year of your start date, and it was too sizable for me to pay back. CIA clearances for new hires expire after six months, and although I started going through the process again, with a promotion and a wife who doesn't like moving around, I finally gave up on the CIA thing, almost two years after I was initially granted a clearance. If I can ever start controlling my CD purchasing habits and save some money, I'd like to go back to school and get an MBA. That seems far away right now, unfortunately.
