  1. I recently won this set on eBay, and have a couple questions: 1. The CD's were sealed, and there was a sticker on the back of the jewel cases saying that the discs were made in Canada. "Made in Canada" is imprinted on the discs as well. I don't recall ever seeing this on any other Mosaics. Was this the norm? 2. The tray inserts for the jewel cases have a 1/2 inch black border on the picture. I've never seen this on any other Mosaic set. Was this the norm? Thanks in advance for help with this.
  2. "Planet of the Apes" is cool! I have the DVD box set, but I don't think I've watched the last couple of them yet. I like the first two the best, even with all that weird bomb stuff. I wish there had been more Charlton Heston in the second one, and that he'd been in all the others. I really liked his character a lot.
  3. I grew up in a suburb of LA, and a few famous people were neighbors or lived very close by: Mike Scioscia, the current coach of the Angels, lived over the wall from me when he was still a catcher for the Dodgers. I always used to hit him up when I was doing fundraisers for my elementary school or Cub Scouts. He usually answered the door himself, was always extremely nice and extremely generous. Of course, I was really young then, but he seemed HUGE - he was a really big guy. I always stared at his World Series ring when he'd sign pledge sheets and stuff like that (I believe it was for the 1988 World Series Dodgers team). Kevin Gross, another former Dodger, lived on the next street over from where Mike Scioscia lived for a while. His bratty children used to play with the children that lived next door to me. I'd often hear them yelling things like "Our dad is richer than your dad!" (Nice kids! ) I never talked to him, but I saw him pick up his kids quite a few times. Snoop Dogg moved to town when I was a junior or senior in high school. His house is maybe a mile from where mine is. I never saw him, unfortunately (well, I saw his tricked-out Suburban a lot, but couldn't see through the glass), but my brother saw him at a gas station and went up to him and got his autograph. People weren't very happy when he moved to town. He moved to a very nice neighborhood, and almost everyone who lived on his street put their house up for sale right after he moved in. I'm pretty sure he still lives there - I drove by when I visited a few months ago, and there were still black dogs on the gates of his house. When I was in high school, a friend of mine and a few of his friends walked up to his house with a basketball and knocked on his door. Some big guy (presumably a bodyguard) opened the door and asked them what they wanted. My friend said to "Yo, we just wanted to see if Snoop wanted to play some hoops." The bodyguard's response? "Man, get the fuck out of here!" And he slammed the door.
  4. Tony Williams is extremely recognizable to me. I'm not familiar with his work outside of the 60's, but his 60's work is very easy to spot.
  5. I didn't buy the Green or Coltrane, as I already have those. I bought the other 4, and have only listened to part of the Blakey so far. What I heard kicked ass! I'm really looking forward to the rest of this, as well as all the others. It really makes me happy to see so many of these available now.
  6. Jazz Pronunciation Guide I think that's the one.

    GUESTS

Up - I'd just like to say welcome to the many guests browsing here. Hope you'll join and add to the discussions!
  8. Happy Birthday, Lon! Thanks for all your contributions to various boards and for your great music recommendations. Hope your birthday is a good one.
  9. I forgot to mention one other GREAT session in the Verve box that I've been listening to a lot lately: INTERMODULATION. This is the "sister" session to UNDERCURRENT, which you may already have. I almost prefer INTERMODULATION. Evans' work with Jim Hall is unbelievable.
  10. Buy a Mosaic and then get $5 off each CD for however many discs are in the set you buy. Works for Selects, too. I think that's what I'm going to do.
  11. Here's the inside. I would imagine that mine has corroded a bit more since I live in a rather humid location.
  12. Pretty corroded.
  13. DrJ, this is a GREAT box. I have the Riverside and Fantasy boxes too, and I prefer this one the most out of the three. Some highlights: The session with the Gary McFarland Orchestra - very sublime music, and not available anywhere else. Highly recommended. Alone - Available in the Master Edition series. Bill Evans plays solo, and it's very peaceful music. I listen to this one a lot when I'm trying to relax or fall asleep. Live at Montreux '68 - I like this one a lot because having Jack DeJohnette on drums really seems to push Evans. Playing sounds very lively and inspired. From Left to Right - My first Bill Evans CD, so this one has long been a favorite. He plays both grand piano and Rhodes, sometimes together. Very laid back session, with orchestra on most tracks. Great version of Eca's "The Dolphin" on this one. There are many, many sessions of note in this box. Find this one used if you can. I got mine for around $175, and it was worth every cent.
  14. I won the Blakey! I've never heard any of the music in this set before, so I'm pretty excited. I've been listening to a lot of Wayne Shorter lately, so I'm excited to have more in my collection. It was a bit pricey, but far from being the most I've paid for a Mosaic.
  15. Tom, If you haven't already, I recommend going to your local Best Buy and playing with both of them. Most Best Buys have working displays on hand so that you can hear what they sound like. I've done this a few times, and have been very impressed with the sound quality. Several of my colleagues have XM radio and rave about it. The subscription fee is cheaper, but you have commercials, whereas with Sirius you do not. However, since this is new technology, for me I would go with XM, simply because they have far more subscribers than Sirius, and thus their outlook for the future is a bit better than Sirius's. For your car/home/office listening needs, I would recommend this Delphi unit: DELPHI SKYFi XM RADIO I've heard great things about this unit, especially since it's very flexible. It's what I would buy if I was going to get XM radio today. Good luck!
  16. I really like Bill Evans' Fantasy work from the 70's. The Woody Shaw Mosaic material is very good. Keith Jarrett's Impulse work is good too, although I've only heard the 75-76 material.
  17. I didn't know who it was either.
  18. I've had this set for a long time, and while I think it's pretty good, I've been a bit surprised that it has fared so well in the "what's your favorite Miles box?" poll. So, I think I need to hear others' opinions on this set. What's your favorite disc in this box? What should I be listening for? Should I be pulling out studio albums and comparing them to particular tracks/discs? Thanks in advance for the help!
  19. Today: Horace Silver - The Cape Verdean Blues, In Pursuit of the 27th Man Freddie Hubbard - Goin' Up Dave Brubeck/Paul Desmond - 1975: The Duets Bobby Hutcherson - The Kicker, Montara, Happenings 311 - Soundsystem Mad Season - Above Alice In Chains - Sap Up next: Miles Davis - Complete Live at the Plugged Nickel (inspired by the "your favorite Miles box" thread)
  20. I also had problems around the time Ron mentioned.
  21. Certainly! I have many more. Send me a PM with your email address.
  22. Voice mail? How'd you do that, bertrand?
  23. Someone should jump on the Bill Evans box. That's a great deal for some fantastic music. Just be careful not to get any rust on your hands when you open the box.
  24. Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral, Macau
  25. I think I got these right. I do this same thing with all my Mosaics, whenever possible.
