I've lost 75 lbs since January, and I'm still overweight. Ouch...
-
At the risk of embarassing myself further, I'll also admit I occasionally enjoy some Snoop-D-O-double-Gee and Dr. Dre.

Welcome back, Weizen! How was your trip? We've missed you around here.

I've mentioned in other threads that I primarily listened to death metal before I got into jazz, and I still have all my death metal CD's and still listen to them from time to time (usually when my wife is gone). Here's a favorite: If you've ever seen Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, these guys were in the movie. This particular album caught Bob Dole's attention in the early 90's, when he was on his music censorship kick. With what is quite possibly the most disgusting album cover I've ever seen, and song titles like "Addicted to Vaginal Skin," "Hammer Smashed Face" and "I Cum Blood," I can't imagine why. Can't say I'm into the lyrics or song titles (you can't understand a word sung anyway), but it's one of the classic albums of the genre.

Anyone like any of these? I get a lot of people raising their eyebrows or laughing at me when I listen to stuff like this. I never turn my music off at work, and since I use a 20GB MP3 player, I just put a bunch of different stuff on the playlist and let it run. Most people seem to think that jazz is the only thing I listen to, since that's most of what's on my player...But then every once in a while I throw in stuff from albums like these, just to keep 'em guessing!

YES! I listen to this stuff all the time too. George Michael wrote some great songs during this period. I think I'll go listen to some now.

I just woke up from a nap, and this seems REALLY heavy...

The US issues are definitely not copy-protected. I have made MP3's from the Rollins, Blakey, Silver and Gordon.

Weizen mentioned he was going to Germany in a thread a few weeks ago, but I don't believe he said when exactly he was going or for how long. Going to Munich

This isn't very obscure, but I don't see it mentioned very often and I think it's a great album. I was just listening to it again and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys jazz guitar, or who just wants to add a little extra Bobby Hutcherson to their collection.

I'm down to less than 10 right now, which is quite an improvement for me. Last year it was around 50 (I ordered almost 40 CD's during the Tower sale last summer ). I've been trying to only order new music when I REALLY want it, but then, I really want everything. I've just been feeling lately like I don't know the music in my collection well enough. When I was younger, I knew the names of all the songs on all my CD's, all the artists who played on them, etc. Now, I often can't remember the names of TWO of the songs on any given CD, and often only know the main performer and maybe one other person on the CD. That alone tells me I'm not spending enough time on my music.

Jazz (today) in Iowa, Missiouri, and the Midwest
vibes replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I think you have the size of the crowd about right. I was pretty impressed by the fact that most of these people did not appear to know who most of the artists were, and were most likely not really jazz fans at all, yet they seemed into the music and did stay around for a lot of it. You're lucky you got to meet Andrew. He's the entire reason I went. He's definitely in my top 5 jazz artists. There's a good chance I'll be there next year - my brother just moved to Iowa City, and just started his master's at the university. It will be much cheaper for me that way. -

Can't answer your question, R_T, but that was a good show. I'm sorry we didn't get to chat more. That was the worst drive home of my life. Didn't get home until 3am, and I usually go to sleep at 9-10pm. -
Mmmmmmh....I was wondering when someone was going to mention Nelly here.

After a dry spell, I've bought quite a few CD's in the last month: Art Blakey Mosaic Illinois Jacquet Mosaic Jack McDuff - Moon Rappin' (great AOW choice!) Art Blakey - Indestructible Sonny Rollins - Vol. 1 Horace Silver - The Horace Silver Trio Dexter Gordon - Our Man in Paris Sonny Stitt - New York Jazz Dorothy Ashby - Afro-Harping (really digging this one, too) Gerry Mulligan Meets Johnny Hodges Jimmy Giuffre - The Easy Way Stan Getz - Reflections I've been really impressed with the recent BN and Verve reissues. Lots of great albums out there.

What Do You Do? What Have You Done?
vibes replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
When I started college (Brigham Young University), I thought I wanted to be a biochemistry major and eventually go into medicine. I decided after a short time, however, that I should focus on something that I actually liked, so I switched to languages. I was working on a triple major in Mandarin, Spanish and Portuguese, and taking Korean on the side, when I decided to be a missionary for the Mormon church. I was sent to Hong Kong and learned Cantonese there. When I came back, I decided to just focus on Mandarin and get a minor in business. I worked full-time in market research call center management my last two years of college, and hated almost every minute of it. When I was offered my own call center to manage right before graduation, I turned it down. I really wanted to go into consulting, but I had no luck there (I suspect the Chinese major didn't help). So, I applied for jobs doing just about everything else - retail management, life insurance sales, government stuff. I finally decided on working at Best Buy corporate in Minnesota, and moved here the day after I graduated. I got married two months after that. The night before my wedding, the CIA called me and told me I was cleared to work for them. Unfortunately, Best Buy had a policy about signing bonuses being returned if you left within one year of your start date, and it was too sizable for me to pay back. CIA clearances for new hires expire after six months, and although I started going through the process again, with a promotion and a wife who doesn't like moving around, I finally gave up on the CIA thing, almost two years after I was initially granted a clearance. If I can ever start controlling my CD purchasing habits and save some money, I'd like to go back to school and get an MBA. That seems far away right now, unfortunately. -
Like Chris, my DVD burner is a part of my computer. If you're going to go that route, I suggest getting a multi-format DVD burner (one that reads/burns both DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW). The biggest problem in recordable DVD right now is that there is no one standard out there. Getting a multi-format burner would save you the headache of finding the right media or of having to ditch the burner if you find out that the discs it requires aren't compatible with your standalone DVD player. Mine is incredibly slow, but I like having it for data storage. So far, I haven't put any of my movies onto discs, but I've stored a lot of mp3's I've created from box sets on discs. 4.7GB per DVD-R, as opposed to 700MB per CD-R is great.

Oops... Time to work on the ol' reading comprehension.

I'm glad someone mentioned this. Herbie's work with Bobby Hutcherson is wonderful. I would suggest any of the tracks on "Oblique" as possibilities as well.
-
How come no one's mentioned this "gem"? I bought the TOCJ of this off someone on the BNBB. I think I've listened to it twice. The vocals are a bit irritating. The only other Roach I've heard is "Good Move." Pretty good album. I'll have to pull it out again.

Lately, it's been 311. I go through phases, and those phases rarely last more than a few weeks. In the past, it's been: John Patton Larry Young Sam Rivers Andrew Hill Wayne Shorter Miles Davis Jackie McLean ...and many others Overall, Bobby Hutcherson is probably the one jazz artist I've listened to the most over the years. It's easy with Hutch - he's played in so many different groups and contexts that it's hard to get bored listening to him.

The Jazz Pronunciation Guide says: zhwow zheel-bare-toe Emphasis on the word is on the "ao," which is nasalized.

Many thanks for the replies, everyone! This "made in Canada" stuff had me a bit worried about the authenticity of the set, and since I paid a premium for it, I wanted to be sure it was the real deal. Sounds like I bought what everyone else got, so I'm good to go. Thanks!

Thanks, Lon!
