From this list, it was "Into Somethin'." My favorites, however, are probably "Judgment" and "One Step Beyond."

Interesting music. I don't think I've ever heard anything like this before. The guitar didn't do much for me - too much fuzz, too loud in the mix. I thought the other parts were pretty cool, however.

Thanks for posting that, Mnytime. I was surprised to see that a few of the Miles Davis SACD's were listed as OOP. They didn't last too long...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JIM ALFREDSON!
vibes replied to randissimo's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
Happy Birthday, Jim! Hope your birthday is a great one. -
Groove Holmes plays on several tracks in the Gerald Wilson Pac Jazz Mosaic. After reading this thread, I went through some of those tracks again this morning. I've never heard any of his small group work, but the big band stuff was very good. If you like Holmes and don't have this set, I highly recommend it, and not just for the tracks he's on, either.

Andrew Hill Quartet - Iowa City Jazz Festival
vibes replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
R_T, I live in Minneapolis, but will be going to the festival. I hope you find people to go with you - I'm really looking forward to the line-up, especially Andrew Hill. -
Extra crispy, all the way. I like the taste, but I can only eat KFC when I have a few hours to lay down afterwards. It always makes me sick.

Actually (scary as this might be ), I've never heard any Ellington big band material. In fact, the only Ellington I've ever heard is on the album he did with John Coltrane. That's why I asked about this material - I don't have a clue about it. Thank you for the recommendations.

All this talk about the Hodges and Johnson sets has gotten me interested in buying these sets. I've never heard the music on either of them. I've never even heard Hodges, and "The Eminent, Vol. 1" is the only Johnson I've ever heard. Can anyone say anything additional about these sets? Make comparisons to other artists/sets/albums? Any help would be appreciated...

I have all three of these, and I say go for the Turrentine. I would say that in addition to being just plain great music, there's also a bit more variety (to my ears) in the Turrentine than in the other two sets. I think there's the least amount of variety in the Stitt set. Having said that, all three are great and you'll be happy with any of them.

Summer 2003 vacation thread

I've only got one thing planned so far: The Iowa City Jazz Festival. I've never been to a jazz concert, so I'm pretty excited. Andrew Hill, one of my favorite jazz artists, will be playing on the last day of the festival. My wife will be out of town that weekend, so I'll be going solo. Should be fun! -
Had to go with Larry Young, because I felt he really stretched himself on the instrument and put himself in a greater variety of contexts than his peers. Having said that, John Patton and Jimmy Smith would be other favorites - love the John Patton albums for the groove, and Jimmy Smith is a no-brainer. The "incredible" title that was on many of his albums was well-deserved. The guy really ripped it up!

I went with Kenny Burrell, but Tal Farlow, Wes Montgomery or Grant Green could easily have been my choice as well. I think Johnny Smith should have been on the list of available choices too. I was listening to the Johnny Smith Mosaic this morning and the guy was absolutely incredible.

I saw "Reloaded" today and it was better than I expected. I'm not into movies with too many special effects, but I guess there was enough action to keep me interested. Mnytime, thanks for the tip on staying through the end of the credits (I usually don't sit through them). A painful experience, to be sure, but it was worth it to see the trailer for "Revolutions." I'm definitely intrigued. To those of you who saw the first "Matrix," I highly recommend seeing the second one. The Zion parts are boring, but there's a lot of good action in the rest of the movie.

I got into jazz in 1996 or 1997, when I was about 20 years old. My parents didn't listen to jazz and I didn't know anyone that listened to jazz, but I had heard bits and pieces of things and wanted to hear more. There was a computer at the local record store that had a music database that could be searched by instrument (a very cool feature I don't recall seeing anywhere else). I decided to search by vibraphone, because it reminded me of music from Tom & Jerry cartoons (don't ask me why) I had watched as a kid. One of the names that came up was Lionel Hampton, so I decided to look around the store to see if I could find any Hamp CD's. I found a Lionel Hampton/Oscar Peterson Verve Jazz Masters compilation, and the rest is history. To this day, most of my favorite jazz albums have vibes somewhere in the mix (as my avatars will almost always attest). -

I have a few old, sealed Conns and a few sealed Verve Elites, like the Getz and the Dizzy Gillespie, but the two most expensive things I have are a sealed Sam Rivers Mosaic and an opened Jackie McLean Mosaic in good condition. I actually tried selling the McLean a few months back but no one wanted to pay my price. That's OK - I'll just save it for later. If anyone reads this and is interested in anything I've mentioned, feel free to ask. -

Ed, I don't have the "Judgment" Conn, but I do have the TOCJ and would consider selling it in order to upgrade. PM me if you're interested. Ask about the "Smoke Stack" Conn too, if you like - I have that as well.

My GOD, you damned FREAK!!! Don't ever post here again!!!! Oh, the horror!

Just got back, and it was definitely much better than the first one. Better effects, better story, more action. I do have to say, however, that I thought it was about 20 minutes too long. If you like the comic or the first movie though, definitely go out and see it. It's a good movie overall.
