  1. I play guitar so.... Ballads & Standards Bass: Ray Brown Drums: Mickey Roker Piano: Monty Alexander Blues & Groove Bass: Ray Brown Drums: Donald Bailey Piano: Red Garland Horn Section Saxophone: Benny Golson Trumpet: Lee Morgan Also, I'd have Gerry Mulligan and Milt Jackson come in and guest on a song or two. Maybe Gerry could help with some of the arrangements! B)

    Why I hate Miles

I gave up trying to compare Miles to other trumpet players a long time ago.
  3. Please excuse my rather colloquial sense of humor!
  4. Thanks. She ain't no Janis Joplin!
  5. I don't think it's been mentioned yet but I would consider picking up Let It Go featuring Shirley Scott. A highly enjoyable listen.
  6. Hey, I'm a white boy from the Chicago suburbs so consider the source. However, she sings with an edge, conviction, and understanding of the material that belie her age. She's got soul, that comes across loud and clear to me. Cheers!
  7. Is anybody else digging this album? I'm seriously impressed by this teenage phenom. She really delivers the goods. Anyone who likes traditional Soul and R&B should check this out. The Real Deal!
  8. VPI: HW-16.5
  9. I put this one on to do just that, and ended up listening to the whole thing. Great album. Welcome has a beautiful feel to it similiar to After The Rain. Thanks for all the suggestions and comments. Keep um' coming!
  10. So, I've been slowly and more or less chronologically going through Trane's catalog. I'm to the point where I can no longer "avoid" his late period work. I actually went out and bought a number of albums that certainly qualify as late period. They are Stellar Regions, Interstellar Space, Sun Ship, Kulu Se' Mama. Got these all used for 6-9 bucks a piece. Also picked up Ascension brand new for under 10 bucks. My question to you is, how should I approach listening these albums? Should I do it in chronological order? Other preferred methods? Interested in hearing about your listening experiences with this music. P.S. I've actually listened to Sun Ship already and found it to be very accessible to these ears.
  11. Another vote for "Black Stars"
  12. A little off track, but the restaurant-review show "Check, Please" on WTTW-Ch. 11, Chicago uses Tommy Flanagan's Freight Trane as a theme song. The Burrell/Coltrane version.
  13. The isolated vocal tracks contained in the box set are so beautiful. If God could sing...
  14. Now your talking! Ahhh-hahhh
  15. No wonder I aggravate myself so much!
  16. About 11:00 p.m. during the week. Gotta get up for "the man" by 6:00 a.m. Weekends are all over the place but, typically somewhere from 1-3 a.m. Additionally, 2-3 weekends a year I pull all-nighters just to remind myself how stupid it is. B)
  17. A few quick searches turned up a Mel Lewis Big Band 1983 concert video (VHS). This contains footage from a show in Jerusalem with a lot of the same personnel that Joe M. mentioned above. I guessing this is a worthwhile purchase. Only wish it was on DVD. Also, another video Live At The Smithsonian appears to be available.
  18. No worries. B)
  19. Prepare The Champagne!
  20. Yeah, it does appear that this album is out of print. Can't find it anywhere. Of course there's always the used vinyl option. That TV show sounds interesting given the rehearsal footage that you've recalled. Do you remember anything else about the series? Was it performance oriented?
  21. Ahhh! "Mel Lewis" that's the one. Thank you. Sounds like a very interesting album.
  22. I heard a version of My Funny Valentine? by the Thad Jones /Mel Lewis Big Band today on the radio. I believe Bob Brookmeyer might have also been playing on this cut. Anyone have a clue what album this is on? A few quick searches at All Music yielded no dividends. The version in question contained a dark, almost classical outro to the song.
  23. Lately I go home and ice my arm. It's a bitch getting old! Actually, I usually watch "Chaplin" shorts. Things from Keystone, Essanay, and Mutual. Always of course with a Bass Ale at hand!

    Pat Martino

How come I always picture a bee buzzing around a flower everytime I hear this solo? It's pretty incredible. He's a master of building tension through repetition. Also some fine playing on "All Blues" from Live At Yoshi's.
