  1. My favorite Mosaic is the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis set. Didn't make the top twenty. Of coruse, much as I like it, I haven't played it much lately, either. Going to give it a spin.
  2. I think I'd travel a distance to see this guy. There are likely a few other things you could do in NYC on the trip.
  3. A friend forwarded this to me. Wish I had a hip dentist like Dr. Silver. I'm facing an hour in the chair on Wednesday and the only thing my dentist plays is a "Golden Oldies" station. http://www.jazzdentist.com/index.htm
  4. Two good live Kenton CD's from the '70's are Live at Redlands University & Birthday in Britain
  5. B.C. wins 34-24 58 points
  6. Give Big Al a little break. I've been listening to jazz for nrearly 35 years now, and honestly when I hear a Bird tune I know it's by Bird but half the time can't identify the tune by without looking at the notes. I'm not a Bird specialist by any means, but more of a Bird generalist. I would get Groovin' High but there's lots of others I wouldn't get. I'm in the same boat with Monk tunes. Dang, I know that's a Monk tune I'm hearing but which one....????
  7. i second that, which is no mean feat considering the historical pertinence of the music... -e- I will third that. My feelings exactly. An exceptional box set, in every respect.
  8. Maybe he was a late comer to Braxton's 100 (or was it 1,000) tuba gig?
  9. No, I have never ordered anything from their website. I have bought very little at bestbuy stores, really - a few CD's and DVD's, and have always paid cash. It's obviously someone fishing around. But it really bugs me that reputable companies seem so nonchalant about having their names used in these kinds of scams. They ought to go after some of these scam artists, or at least one, as a sign that they won't put up with this stuff. Can't answer the other question. I don't open files of any kind anymore unless I know the sender personally.
  10. Just received the following from info@bestbuy.com. Interestingly it didn't come to my personal email, but to my generic business email address. It had an attachment which I didn't dare open. It went into the spam file which I then emptied. Man, I hate these things. Dear Customer, Thank you for ordering from our internet shop. 11. What?? You mean, you don't store them in a deep freeze in a temperature and air pressure controlled room, to be checked and handled only once a year with sterile masks and gloves? And of course, there are never to be taken anywhere near a turntable!!! Just kidding, but it's funny how we give our Mosaics much better treatment than our other recordings, even our other box sets. Something about those Mosaics!
  12. I took a quick look at the site. Looks interesting. I'll look again when I have more time. Maybe it's just my computer, but there were some lines printed over others, making some of the text impossible to read. I also suggest getting some McCoy Tyner up under his own name (apart from the Coltrane things). Tyner strikes me as perhaps the prime ongoing practitioner of modal jazz.
  13. Just got mine yesterday. I'm on my third spin. It's superb as Ron says, though I'm not yet prepared to say I enjoy it more than "Convergence Zone." Both are excellent.
  14. Don't overlook this 1968 date. It's a great recording IMHO, a real personal favorite.
  15. I can see why Lon had trouble writing within these guidelines (not the length, but the stylistic guidelines.) I would, too. My feeling is that writing is much like playing jazz. If you have to be "taught" how to do it, at least to the extent that is evident in these guidelines, let me tell you, you ain't got it, baby!
  16. Lon, that calls for a bit of an explanation, if you feel like it , of course.
  17. From what I recall (vaguely) Chas' version is right. A great player, for sure, who left us too soon. Kind of ironic that his last (or one of his last recordings) was with Art Pepper.
  18. I am as big a promoter/defender of this set as anyone on this Board (and it's a set I hestiated over, but truthfully I have come to love it. It is probably the one Mosaic set which has most exceeded my expectations). I know everyone's tastes differ, but David, I think that's a rather unfair characterization of the the music on this set.
  19. Thanks for the greetings everyone. I've been a bit under the weather today with a touch of asthma, so it hasn't been the best day health wise, but I received some nice gifts and a enjoyed a pleasant family meal this evening. Now if the Maple Leafs can hold the 4-3 lead they had over the Flames (NHL hockey) at the end of the 2nd period, the day will be just fine. Oh, it's fine anyway since I listened to some good jazz earlier today (the Joe Pass Mosaic, & Gene Di Novi Plays Ellington & Strayhorn).
  20. I don't recall one person writing on this Board that they regret buying the Elvin set. I bought the Roach and Jones sets at the time time, thinking for sure that the Jones would take second place in my affections. Well, much to my surprise, I like the Jones set even more than the Roach. A really strong point of the Jones set is that it's not bogged down by a lot of alternate takes. Can't recall any, as a matter of fact, though there may be a few. Don't go by what you know of the individual Jones sessions. When you put all the sessions together in one set, there is a marvelous unity that emerges, which makes individual seesion somehow shine more brightly. I have never heard this happen as strongly on any other Mosaic set as it does with the Jones. I personally believe it's one of the best sets Mosaic has ever done.
  21. Holy Stitt: What were the others? Might as well start a run on them. Thanks
  22. Just checking the capri website again. All their releases appear right back to the late '80's seem to be available, so I can't imagine Exploration is OOP.
  23. I quite like the Locke CD. Some really great vibes playing on that set. A swinging band, too. I have Joel Helleny's Lip Service. Haven't heard it for a while. Decent, if not exceptional record. Hellleny is a solid, mainstream- boppish trombonist, but, much like this CD, not really outstanding in the field, IMHO.
